The Alpha Bundle is live!

Here at Indie Royale we're debuting our first-ever Alpha Collection, with buyers being able to play and help fund to completion three fully-featured, in-development titles.

This now-available bundle was hand-picked to include three games with immediately fun, playable 'alpha' versions and current or imminent PC, Mac and Linux versions. Each of the developers has committed to providing updates regularly to all Indie Royale buyers until the title is complete.

The website has gotten a few changes as well. Thanks Popstar for the details below!

So a ripoff of that one japanese psp game from 2 years ago where you own shops that sells stuff to stereotypical jrpgs heroes, a game that feels like a mod of minecraft with guns, and a pixelart 'lost vikings' hommage.

Ohhhh indie devs, never change!

At least this bundle has no arkanoid/tetris ripoff, or a game featuring zombies

Wyv and Keep looks fun. Who cares if it's derivative if it's a good game? It's not like the co-op puzzle platformer is a crowded genre.

It's kind of a genre of games that predate your two year old PSP game that is probably actually being confused with Recettear.

Really, the world can only take that much Minecraft ripoffs. I know there's probably a lot of work behind it, but still, it's like some people aren't even trying to be unique anymore. Hey, it's Minecraft! But with lots of guns! :( Maybe it's just me though, if you guys are happy with it, I'm happy for you :)

Probably the first bundle I'm not even thinking about buying.

Looks like Towns is some sort of Dwarf Fortress-lite. So that means that $5.08 is worth it and bitching about indie devs making games in a genre.

You could probably make the case that Dwarf Fortress was the last 'new' thing to happen to the game world but that sounds long and annoying.

So this looks good and I'll pick it up later. Most people should do the same. Or is Tim Schafer the only person that deserves gamer money now.

What if Steam rejects the games?

Here's what you're signing up for, and what you are owed for your money:
- Alpha versions of 3 games
- On Desura or DRM free

Here's what you might hypothetically get if all goes well:
- Final versions of those games
- Possibly on other services like Steam.

This is in the readme for Wyv and Keep:

quote:
Thank you for downloading the free preview of Wyv and Keep: The Temple of the Lost Idol!
We hope you enjoy the game and consider purchasing the full version.
The full version has 60 new levels, online play and a map editor! It's quite worth it!

That comes off as an ass thing to do after you help fund their game.

Bought it just to try Towns.

Side note, I don't know why any game that involves a world made of blocks is now immediately a Minecraft ripoff but it has to stop.

Edit: Towns is really trying to mimic Dwarf Fortress as much as possible though. Even with the music.

wow, this is.. wow.

edit: ah, cool, problem solved :) Thanks for clarifying, John!

John Polson here. I work on Indie Royale. We've contacted the developers and straightened out this issue. They maintain a free demo version of Wyv and Keep on Desura and accidentally added the free demo readme.txt to their latest upload.

Purchasing this alpha collection will entitle you to all Wyv and Keep's future updates, including when the full version releases.

The "readme.txt" error has also been addressed. Sorry for the confusion!

Spoilers, Minecraft was an indie game too. ;)

Just to be clear - and because GAF will see conspiracy everywhere - does that also apply to the other two games?

Yes, each developer will give us every update of the game up to and including its final version. You will be able to get updated builds through Desura and your personalized bundle key page.

Not to nitpick but...you might want to alter your promotional images so people don't get the impression that four titles are going to be offered instead of just three, as far as I remember it always had four represented.

As exposed with the first bundle, the deal was:
  • a new bundle every two weeks
  • an initial price of $2
  • each bundle consists of four games

But it changed.

Purchased as soon as i saw it , really loving 3079 , Towns menus needs more polish and havent tried wyv yet but it looks good.
However Survivors of Ragnarok developer said they would be in the alpha fund bundle and was longly speculated as one of the games , maybe they are in the next one ?

I'm just about done with the Indie Royale. Too much quantity, too little value. And now they're hawking Alpha games? What's next? Flash prototypes?

I'm sure the developers feel the opportunity is quite welcome, as do many people who actually take an interest in interesting upcoming Indie titles. Also, you are getting all of the versions of the titles being offered, so you are actually buying a finished title in its infancy as well as giving aid to developers who tend to live on shoestring budgets.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the concept of this.

None of the games really tickle my fancy, with the Minecraft mod being downright off-putting. Wyv and Keep looks nice, but there's a lot of free platformers (with good pixel art) out there, so I'm not really seeing how it stands out from that.

But these aren't steam games!
No, they're alpha builds that you can pay to help support. Alpha-funding is a big feature in Desura. Kind of like Kickstarter.

Desura is actually a really good service, and in some ways, better than Steam. You're doing a disservice to yourself if you have unused Desura keys and haven't downloaded the client yet.

HIB has done this as well. If you don't like the bundle presented, don't buy it--there's really no reason for a bad bundle to dissuade you from buying other future bundles if they meet your standards.

I haven't got a Desura account. How do I know when these titles are updated? Will I have to create one?

The towns game is in English and Spanish if anyone's interested.
There is a Linux version for all three it seems.

I am having a lot fun with all 3 of these. I'm actually excited to be able to see how they develop over time.
Not that they are in any way unplayable now, especially Wyv and Keep. It's looking and playing fantastic.

3079 is great FUN and once I get into Towns properly I think that's the one I will sink a lot of time into.

It was also nice to see the devs chatting in the RPS comments on the bundle yesterday. Keep it up guys!

think there'll be updated versions directly on the bundle download page. so you don't have to use desura if you don't want to. but you'll have to manually keep updated it seems like.

maybe we can get the indieroyale people to do a rss feed for alpha bundle game updates. How about it John_Polson?

Apparently Desura can notify you of updates or changes if you specifically click the "track" button on the main page of the titles you are interested in.

I just created a Desura account, it wasn't that much trouble. Plus I finally got to add all the titles from previous Indie Bundles I had purchased. I think I ended up redeeming about 8-10 different bundles...

I'll be damned, all this time looking forward to this one and I already have the 2 games of interest---though I can say both Towns and 3079 are indeed quality and are enjoying a brisk dev pace, especially 3079 which is gaining less of a Minecraft look with each update lately aside from all the crazy stuff that goes down in it.
