So far the show has been decent, however it needs some sort of villain. Right now the main character doesn't seem like he's working towards much, a bad guy would change that. I personally think that and the 15 minute time slot hurts the show a bit.

So this show actually ends at 22? Welp they immediately dealt with the trashy side characters and lol at that nonsense his mom was spouting. Well
I just hope that crocodile army officer that I forgot his name and Gai's strategist actually get to the bottom of this and at least, try in vain to actually get an explanation for everything that happened and will soon happen like why Gai is now Sephiroth and have at you.

More than Sephiroth, I'd say he's Griffith.

Gintama - Rose & Thorns arc

I finished this one a little while ago, but did just remember that I've done no impressions. Thus to rectify: This arc wasn't one of Gintama's best, by any means, but it did end on a solid note with a surprising little snippet of extension--I never realized that the Shinsengumi didn't know of Gintoki's past persona--Though, it doesn't seem as if that's really going to become anything from here forward. Unfortunate, but expected, I guess.

My issue with this arc was, and I think I might have mentioned this before, was how redundant much of it felt. The Shinsengumi as a whole had already received a gloss-over in the arc with Sougo and his Onee-san, and Hijikata, while receiving an interesting little exploration of character, wasn't really strong enough a difference to make any difference, if that makes any sense.

On that note, and to be my last, Sougo was the boss as usual. His detached rhetoric always makes for the best quotes. The line about the whole building being the only coffin big enough to hold her (forgot the name) was badassry incarnate.

The Light of El Cantare
Haly, did you ever watch the Fafner movie? I just finished watching it. Will post a review/impressions in a bit.

Now that I know that it exists, I'll be watching it soon and hopefully be able to discuss it with you.

Anyone know when the Scryed Alteration I BD is out?

For Sakamichi no Apollon to be a trainwreck, it would have to be one of the greatest disasters anime has ever witnessed.

What a pessimist.
I think zeroshiki didn't mean derailing the hype train in terms of production quality but rather, the hype gathered around the staff may lead to disappointment with the premise of the show. Though I won't speak for him, that's the way I interpreted that statement.
You're like the Jexhius of monocole lists.
Monocle. Or was that suppsoed to be monocoal?

I have not, also that's a really random question.

Fuck. Was it you or Hix who was going through Fafner / mecha anime recently? Maybe it was Hix who watched Fafner.

Excellent. Welp:

Fafner in the Azure: Heaven and Earth

I came in expecting bromance, bad CG and
tear-jerking death
. Welp, 2/3 ain't bad I guess...

Let's start with the good:

-Behind the ugly CG and bland character design, some of the backdrops ARE drawn well. Some of it really evoked 90's hand drawn animation.
-This movie must have had a decent budget because the fight scenes were spectacular. Shitty CG aside, it was fluid. I can't say it's better than Break Blade (as the latter is more traditional in it's battles I think) but it's up there. Fast-paced, fluid and just eye-candy.
-This might sound off but there was no real protagonist in this movie and I think it somewhat helped it. Others might disagree but considering this was a "war movie", the divided focus kept things a bit more compelling.
-Some unresolved questions were answered, such as
Sakura's true fate

Now the bad:

-Maybe I'm an idiot but the plot was somewhat convoluted. I might be able to pick it up 100% on a rewatch. I got the basic tenets of it but the little details that evoked the major plot points and events in the movie were lost on me. Maybe Hix or Pierrot will have better luck.
-Dat ugly-ass CG. It doesn't help that the entire festum army is CG. It is so god damn distracting, especially given the backdrop of the art and some of the fight scenes.
-Some characters needed more fleshing out, especially the Nishio siblings. Hopefully the rumored new series will give remaining fans something to look forward to. If there isn't much more to the back stories than what was in the movie, it's pretty shallow. It reminds me of another throwaway character in recent mecha anime:
Loni
from Gundam Unicorn. At least
her death can somehow be used for Banagher's character development
.

Now, getting back to my 2/3 comment and perhaps the biggest shocker of this movie:
no one dies (well unless you count the Mirs and their avatars dying/being reborn but that again related to a plot point I totally didn't grasp well). This is really surprising given the amount of depressing death in the original series. Now, you could argue that Sakura, Kenji and the Nishio twins (specifically them given the explosion they're involved in) die but I'm not buying it. I might have missed their Fafners actually being shown before the end credits but I doubt the movie would kill them off without acknowledging them. Again, something the rumored new series can expand upon.

All in all, the movie was ok. I don't consider it terrible by and means and maybe if I end up understanding the entire plot, I'll appreciate it more. As a movie, the action scenes do it justice. It's still Fafner though. If you weren't a fan of the series, the movie will probably not change your mind.

I guess I might be on board for the new series, which takes place 2 years after the film. That is, if it ever sees the light of day. It's apparently going to be called Fafner: EXODUS

not xx, but:

The story will take place in an underground world where tunnels extend everywhere. Even though they live in dark and confined spaces, people wear protective clothes and lead quiet and enjoyable lives. Patema, a princess in her underground village, loves to explore the tunnels. Her favorite place is a "danger zone" that her village prohibits people from entering. Even though she's scolded, Patema's curiosity can't be held back. No one ever explained what the supposed danger was. On her usual trip to the "danger zone," Patema faces unexpected events. When hidden secrets come to light, the story begins to unfold.

Yoshiura previously wrote "This new animation is … a story about girl-meets-boy, and boy-meets-girl. It is an extremely righteous, but also extremely strange, story."
and obviously Yoshiura himself is of time of eve fame.

I wonder if these two things are connected...
Well, if you put her character profile in there, the personality definitely does not match the appearance.
In the previous thread Thoraxes mentioned the one scenario in which Sae's SS+ arc could turn out amazing. Maybe he'll be so kind as to lay out the gory details again if he sees this.
It's on the last page! (if you view 100 per page that is)

Basically this happens (or they can still just do it anyways because just do it): True end involves Sae having
implied sex at the movie theater with Junichi and getting preggers in high school only 9 months after the date.

The best end would have the listed above normal true end, and : Nishishishishshi can
be the godmother and caretaking aunt, and be around the child
all the time nishishishishishihi'ing.

I don't remember what I wrote in the last thread though, heh. So I think that's it.

The premise has already been laid bare so people have no one to blame but themselves if they're expecting another Cowboy Bebop out of it.

Don't get me wrong. I liked the episode. Just nitpicking at stuff.

Complaining about the Engrish isn't that nitpicky if it distracts you (as it distracted me). Then again, it could be classified as nitpicking considering all the other problems that episode had.

I have a feeling that the OT for the anime will be dead after one episode when non-AnimeGAF people realize this isn't Cowboy Bebop.

Guilty Crown -18

For a guy that just lost his arm not even 24 hours ago, he's doing surprisingly fine. I also like how Inori has a personality now. Only took 18 episodes. I just want this series to end already.

I was surprised he was fine with this.

I think most would have had some emotional breakdown.

Though I disagree, its pretty enjoyable that I kind of dont want it to end yet, or at least for us to leave the universe.

Not much apart from what Dresden has posted and Mr. Yoshiura comments on the "girl-meets-boy/boy-meets-girl" nature of the story, but he reiterated it is something new or a step forward from what he has tried to make until now. Seems like a rather... environmentalist... message of hope could be heavily present on this as well.

fellow Read or Die fans (all four of you):

I like how Yomiko went from a lovable, nerdy heroine to someone out of an Idea Factory game. I guess it's from the new manga they're launching.

It's apparently a completely different character, who also just happens to be called Yomiko, who lives in a world where the printed word is a completely dead medium. Probably means she's some kind of bibliophile junky trying to go cold-turkey due to the absence of dead-tree media, forced to hoar herself out in order to afford the skyrocketing prices of vintage media...

Errr, anyway, completely different character. I guess I'm alright with it, but unlike the classic Yomiko, there's no way I'd keep a gashapon figure of her on my desk at work.

It's really hard to gleam anything from that slightly awkward teaser beyond the art style, which looks nice enough, I see they've got a girl in there for all the "hngh" fans.

For those who don't know or can't be bothered to look it up, Yasuhiro Yoshiura is the writer and director of Aquatic Language, Pale Cocoon, and most importantly, Time of Eve. That alone is enough for me to be interested.

Well, yes, it's always worth nothing the team behind a project. However, in this case, I was hoping for a bit more from the trailer than just a setting. It didn't even really invoke a mood because the editing was too wonky.

Still, I like the creators past efforts, so I'll remain cautiously optimistic.

Revolutionary Girl Utena 09

There should be more kendo anime. It shows up often, but off the top of my head the only one I can think of that has it as a central focus is Bamboo Blade.

Saionji's flipping red and black for Touga pretty hard.

So Utena
met Touga and Saionji when they were kids but they all don't recognize each other now?
I thought people hated that kind of plot twist.

It was pretty satisfying seeing Saionji get bitchslapped, though honestly he deserved quite a bit more.

I think now Touga's an even bigger jerk than Saionji, albeit in a different way.

NTR! NTR! NTR!

That's just cruel, Kagari.

Somebody please explain to me
how she went from batshit insane and possessive to popular in two episodes.

And I'm starting to feel that
maybe that Saya bitch will lead the girls into some kind of connection with the Black Rock Shooter world.
I won't be able to stop watching this despite all the shortcomings because now I wanna know what the hell is her agenda.

Also, this scene was pretty cool:
