Winter 2012 Anime Thread 2.22: You Can (Not) Outpost Cajunator

Yum, this was fun. A graduate project, huh?

Yeah, it's very impressive. This guy deserves to have a long, successful career.

Yeah, recently Crunchyroll starting posting a handful of these kinds of projects each month. Here's the current batch, and there's links to the past galleries in the same article.

Right; that's where I got this short from. It's leagues ahead of the other stuff in that post (Magical Promise is particularly cringe-inducing), although Monaural has an interesting story concept.

studio mappa's gonna own if they keep this kinda stuff up

I feel I should leave this here to demonstrate how this Renaissance inspired other art: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbzZYacdCns
i'm saving the abridged version for when i've finished this epic legend of the wind of the universe!

Dooppel! is a pretty neat, well-animated short featuring a fight between a girl and her, uh, doppel(ganger). Check it out.
This was pretty good.

i'm a huge sucker for these kinda things so... *bookmarks*

Honestly, my first thought watching that short was "I guess it's true animators nowadays dont know how to draw anything else besides little girls".

That's what I figured; heck, Dooppel by itself is way ahead of almost anything else they've ever posted so far IMO, but I figured people might want to take a look at everything else anyway.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
It's actually a very clever, calculated choice.

These days, studios are not going to hire based on how well someone understands fight choregraphy, but how well they can draw moeblobs.

I'm curious, but does this also include girls?

My heart couldn't take it.

They're allowing him to work from Australia? That's...unconventional, isn't it? They must snail-mail him the ramen packets.

Well it's actually a logical continuation of his character up till now. It's been proven time and time again that Araragi is sexually interested by every female that he's ever met. Well, we can't say that for sure because we never see any non-main characters, but his track record so far seems to suggest his desires know no limit, he must collect them all.

Plus, it's not really awkward because
Karen wants his toothbrush back in her mouth. She's cleary into it too.

True. Limiting Araragi means limiting the fetishes/respective audiences they can sell those BDs to.

Yeah, recently Crunchyroll starting posting a handful of these kinds of projects each month. Here's the current batch, and there's links to the past galleries in the same article.

Crunchyroll has actually become quite the source for information, I've noticed recently. They're on the beat, surprisingly.

Wow, the biggest news here though, is that Cindy Yamauchi has officially left Madhouse and joined MAPPA. I wonder how many more ex-Madhouse animators and animation directors are at MAPPA. Madhouse is really Badhouse now.

R.I.P. That Chihayabomba isn't helping. Bets: How long until MAPPA goes Manglobe and pulls a 'The Sacred Blacksmith?' I say three shows, moeblob on the fourth.

Night Raid 1931 1

Not sure if I like the idea of a super-powered team that are encouraged not to use their abilities.

Also, this whole raid mission had very little context. Even having seen episode 0, I was pretty confused regarding the character motivation and the plan itself. Should've been more time to flesh things out.

Might give it a few more episodes, but I've gotten a bit weary.

This book of Hayo Miyazaki's writing is full of telling utterances. For example in 1989 he wrote this about 'Creating scenarios':

I have never studied scriptwriting, nor have I made any efforts to read the scenarios of projects other than my own. In the worst cases, I have been known to just skim through the scenarios of projects that I am involved with and leave the rest to intuition and feelings.

I think that tells you quite a lot about Miyzaki's approach to making anime. It's not hard to see how Howl's got made.

Possibly proof of the existence of "genius".

Gyo OVA

Meh, I can't even finish this. The atmosphere from the manga is nowhere to be found, the characters look ugly and not in the way they're supposed to and the CG would be laughable if it weren't so atrocious. Don't watch this. Read the manga instead.

A decent list, actually. Fairly representative of overall popularity I'd imagine. Maybe I'd have switched Rinne and Aquarion Evol, but not really much else.

Eh, I think Milky Holmes is better than that. (Doesn't help that apparently no one is watching it.)

Well, regardless of which is better (haven't watched Milky Holmes), one would expect Rinne to be much higher than that considering how well it panders to anime fans.

Then again, maybe Rinne isn't popular among the western crowd.

It's not that popular. I see a lot of complaints about how cliche it is.

Milky Holmes is in 23rd place. Far bigger outlier than Lagrange. Nise is in 2nd, which is terrible. A number of shows are lower than crap like Papa no ikouto and Area. Its just a popularity list, it happens to mostly work because this season is pretty weak, but its no more accurate than the regular rating.

Apart from Thermae Romae being in the upper tier, there's not much good, or right, about that list. Not when the best show is in the middle, Milky Holmes is almost at the bottom, etc...

nisemonogatari - 08

After all the hubbub I expected something raunchier. Perhaps it's a sign of how far gone I am, but the actual tooth-brushing was kinda meh.

It's somewhat twisted, very perverted, back-and-forth dialogue paired with a focus on wiggling toes and head-tilts--can't say I didn't enjoy it.

He won't be too far gone until he does something crazy like sit on the bench from the K-On movie poster.

I'm ashamed to admit that I totally did that yesterday

We should bribe Jexhius into doing this.

The point, if there is a point, to forcing others to watch guiding others towards shows like Blood C, Arjuna and School Days is that these works ramp up over time before they arrive at some kind of glorious, painful climax. There's a downward progression to these works which is entertaining to experience from the outside.

Nisemonogatari is nothing like that.

That downward progression exists in Angel Beats too, but I can't bring myself to recommend that show... it's just too painful. I'm not that cruel.

That reminds me that Angel Beats has a literal trainwreck as part of its "story."

YES

Also I just realized that Rika is voiced by Yukari Fukui.

...yeah I can definitely see why someone would hate her so much.

As others have said, the simple toothbrushing animations themselves weren't too bad, it was the combination of EVERYTHING that drove this into the upper layers of the stratosphere.

As an aside, it's interesting that the first episodes of both story arcs have ignored the titular character to focus on a side character.

:(

It's pretty sad to see a great series like Angel Beats attacked again and again, rarely with any acknowledgement that the hatred is entirely personal opinions and isn't representative of the show's general popularity or overall quality...

I mean, when I dislike something I certainly say so, but I do try to think about an objective viewpoint too, about the overall quality of the show irrespective of my dislike for it. I know that's hard sometimes, certainly true for everyone, but I do try... that's entirely absent from posts like this.

Of course I'm biased, given that Angel Beats was one of my three favorite animes of 2010 (probably #2 behind Sora no Woto), but still, it's worth saying again.
