No key free agents are going to sign there. No one like Deron or Dwight. Franchise, impact types are not going to sign there. Their biggest hope is to land someone like Anthony Davis, build around him, and try to convince him to stay. Even that's a tall order.
Avery Johnson seems to think that Deron is going to sign with Dallas. If they get Deron and Dwight that's going to be the most complete team in the NBA. How in the fuck would you guard that team?

Dallas can't get both Deron and Dwight unless one of them agrees to give up a ton of money. They won't have enough cap space for 2 max deals unless they trade Shawn Marion this year.

Is there anything preventing the Lakers from sending their trade exception to Dallas? Like a rule that states it can't go back to the team that acquired the player, in this case Lamar Odom? Because that deal makes a lot of sense for both teams. If I'm the Lakers, I'm trying to get Marion and Beaubois... they would make a nice run for the title.

Dallas is not looking to move Beaubois. They have to have someone step in when Terry leaves and Kidd retires.
I'm sorry, I love Beaubois, I think he's underrated... but in the present context, if you're Dallas, you do anything to make cap room. I know they're not looking to move him, but in the Deron / Dwight situation, he's an afterthought.

For Deron and Dwight I think it might be. That's a lot of money to be leaving on the table (and remember, with the new rules, they would already be leaving money behind as it is by not resigning with the team that has their Bird Rights. You're talking like $30 million)

Who knows, Deron and Dwight might be having discussions under the table. I think Deron would probably take a discount to play in his home state with Dwight Howard. Also, don't put it past Dirk to restructure his contract. He already signed a discounted contract and if he's concerned about legacy he'll be completely selfless like he's been in the past.

You can't restructure in the NBA. I guess I'm just more cynical that two guys in their prime would agree to team up, but one would take way less money. I can't see it happening. You never know though. And hey if the Mavs can find someone to unload Marion on they don't have to worry about it.

They have no assets aside from maybe Roddy. No real contracts to trade either because they've focused so much on clearing cap. You basically have to do it one way or the other. Either you have stockpiled contracts and assets and you can trade for a star, or you clear cap space and wait to sign them outright. The Mavs have put all their eggs in the "sign them outright" basket, so they basically have to wait it out and hope nobody trades for either guy and they hit the FA market.

tl;dr -
Essentially in 2012-2013, we're gonna have about 43.5 mil on the books, with the ability to amnesty Marion or Haywood and move some pieces around, Dwight and Deron could both come over if they accept less than max (dwight around 17 mil a year, deron a little less) and Dirk restuctures.

No, Dirk did not. Only way for it to work is if they get marion off their books and bring back no contracts for next year.
Dirk is making $20 million next season. They have to basically get rid of every player on the team except Dirk.
You can't restructure contracts for years beyond the age of 36. Which is what Dirk would have to do. he's locked in.
