Winter 2012 Anime Thread 2.22: You Can (Not) Outpost Cajunator

Infinite Stratos - terrible main character
Strike witches - doesn't look interesting
Highschool of the Dead - good fun, but watched it already
Sekirei - bad characters, boring show
Queen's Blade - see Highschool of the Dead
Thanks, but I was looking for more "under the radar" stuff I guess. I think I know all the famous shows already.

I can't (or, truth be told, won't) speak to the treatment of womenz in their other works or in anime as a whole, but the scene & movie in question are not misogynistic, merely realistic. The characters may internalize that attitude without that actually being the attitude of the work or of the creators. That's why I have a problem with calling something 'unnecessary' just because it makes you uncomfortable.

Maybe he has a better argument and thinks that it actually takes away from character development- not just takes away from character likeability- though. He didn't really say why it was unnecessary, which makes it somewhat difficult to discuss.

I agree that scene didn't feel misogynistic to me. The point was to show both characters as extremely flawed people, a point that tied in with the film as a whole, and especially the ending. You could always choose to tell a different story that doesn't require that scene, but I don't think the story they did choose would be as powerful without that moment. If you want to accuse the film of anything it could be misanthropy, since the behavior of both men and women is shown in a negative light.

I may or may not have had a hand in creating that collection using CR.

You should really check out Strike Witches, based on what you've said you like, even if you don't think it looks that interesting.

I really have to thank jason for arranging this delightful collection of still images. It really speaks volumes about the show as a whole:

The creepiest SHAFT face I can recall from memory. All it's missing is drool.

Denpa was also creepy as fuck and still haunts me.

Kampfer, MM!, Needless, Seitokai no Ichizon, and TWGOK are decent if you wanna talk more recent shows.

Nothing these current days really go under the radar though because the audience for anime has much more access for it through current contacts with websites like Crunchyroll and the likes.

Chihayafuru

Not bad! Playing against a "mirror image" of her old self, was a pretty smart move to show her development since the last summer tournament.

Oreimo + ONAs (END)

Screw Kirino.
Screw Ayase.
Screw any other idol friend of Kirino's.
Screw all these tsundere characters.
Screw the MC for friendzoning the friendzone character (she was pure waifu material).
Screw this entire show.

Screw the character designs for being so appealing.

The only genuine good to come out of this is all the acoustic guitar covers of the OP.

Erika's father sure is a ladykiller,
shows a girl a picture of a horse and she ends up marrying him.

Even if the cause for the monster was pretty basic, it was still a fun episode, but
tomatoes are disgusting when eaten like that, the juice and seeds squirt everywhere.

From the preview, another
precure might be joining soon, since another fairy has appeared!

This episode was especially fun with the meta-humour.

Yup, as I said, it was a very lighthearted episode, so there was plenty of that!

So that was the final attack?
It's odd how Japan seems to love Jupiter, anyone know why?
Because they were wrong.

I wasn't judging anything, I was playing around since they both heavily focus on friendship. Also I have only seen the first episode of Danball, I enjoy the games but not for the story.
Ah, my bad. But the friendship isn't as heavily focused as you'd think. In Suite, it was at its heaviest even when compared to the original series.

I guess, considering I also watched two of those as well (Kämpfer and Needless). Will look into the other shows, thanks.

[Wings of Honneamise]

The other interesting thing about it which ties into the flawed (& realistic) people concept:
the attempted rapist is portrayed as a normal and otherwise respectable person who makes a terrible mistake, as opposed to the 'anonymous psychotic in a dark alley' stereotype, while the victim, as often happens in reality, blames herself
. It's easier to think of such a crime in a more black-and-white way, but the film doesn't take the easier way out. Thankfully, I must say!

The movie as a whole isn't misanthropic, I don't think. This scene and the later attempt to
foil the space launch
help bring some balance to what might otherwise be an overly positive ending - what with mankind managing the great, admirable, and awe-inspiring achievement of space flight. Pretty nuanced, I think.

I don't think it's misanthropic, but I could see that argument more than the misogyny one. I think what you mention is what really makes people uncomfortable- it's not just that there's an
attempted rape scene, but that the one committing it is the protagonist, and we're still expected to sympathize with him afterwards. It's a lot more uncomfortable than a faceless rape monster because it forces you to think about how you've been identifying with someone who would do that.
They even lampshade it in the next scene where Shirotsugh asks his coworker "have you ever wondered, if your life was a story, maybe you aren't the good guy?"

Guilty Crown 10-18

To be honest, I'm enjoying this. It's my new guilty pleasure. I so wanna see where Shu'll end up, and the show really caters to those who hate virtually all the characters and want them to die horrible deaths after becoming numb from suffering and pain.

This is totally what this show should've been about.

There's so much bullshit in this. I thought you guys were exaggerating when you said they pulled deus ex machinas out of their asses the entire time, but sweet Jesus how right were you.

The girl Shu didn't give a shit about dies and in a couple of days he becomes Batman, complete with mysterious shadow effects, and suddenly has an incredible governing apparatus? Oh God. Wait, there's a freaking Secret Service? They're really scavenging a ship?

And then obviously Gai is alive and fuses voids into a missile or whatever and Inori becomes some freaky furry.

At this point I can only imagine whether they were trying to recreate Star Wars Episode III or if they're just trolling us.

And, oh-- wait a second, what is this?!

I see.

I really have to thank jason for arranging this delightful collection of still images. It really speaks volumes about the show as a whole:
I actually found this line from his earlier post to be somewhat amusing:
Do all loli vampires behave the same way? Between Moonphase, Vampire Bund, this show, and Negima, I feel like they do. Or at least Shaft portrays them all the same way. Is it cause and effect? Or effect and cause?
Heck, if Hazuki didn't have blue/purple hair, you could tack on "blond" to that description as well.

I dont understand what the surprise about fusing voids was, Shu already did it in that episode with the earth to satelite laser pen thingy.

Magical Girl Madoka 1

Mixed feelings about this so far but that might be due to lack of sleep. We'll see how it goes as I continue.

G Gundam 7

The Tequila Gundam sure is... something.

Masou Kishin Cybuster 1

Loose adaptation of the Masou Kishin characters? Well this might be a chore. Eleven years after disaster ruined Tokyo, Ken Ando is trying to join an organization that is trying to clean it up. Ken's not too likeable thus far, his father even less so. The first episode isn't really subtle in letting the viewer know Ken's father knows more about everything than he lets on, the eyecatch is horrible, and I'm not too fond of this Cybuster design that seems to embrace an alien sensibility over an avian but what can you do?

Blood-C 7

Aside from the dog, I didn't care much for this ep. The monster of the week ventured away from the supernatural feel I was enjoying thus far, the action was poor, and even the gratuitous violence was middling. For a show focused on blood spray for effect, I'd have thought they'd abuse blood flow as well. Even the gore was absent with the disappearing body and what were evidently superficial injuries to Saya. That said, watching her get beat up a little more each episode gives me the same weird vibes as Terry Goodkind torture porn.

Glass Fleet 11

The entire conversation in the rain is amazing. Drama at its finest. Some highlights:
Vetti Sforza said:
Have you ever found yourself moist from tears of shame?

Vetti Sforza's foster father said:
It's your own fault for being so god damn pretty. Your eyes, your nose, your mouth. Just looking at the perfection that is your face agitates me.

I like this show a lot but some of the decisions in portraying space encounters just baffle me. This is supposed to represent two opposing fleets.

It's clearly an eyeball-egg with two sperms trying to get into it.

I dont understand what the surprise about fusing voids was, Shu already did it in that episode with the earth to satelite laser pen thingy.

I just find the concept annoying.
It's like a level 2 insurance for their bullshit-making. They already had the power to pull anything out of their asses with each void, and now they're not limited by the characters anymore. If the king only has characters with known voids around, he can simply combine them to create another void completely different from the ones they had previously.

We're basically at their mercy.

The whole magic girl genre is disturbing if ya think about it (and not just madoka). Happiness/Peace through violence... which in precure... puts the monster of the week into climax?

I hate you forever because now I'm only going to be able to see this as an o-face:

That's my main problem. Manami is the best girl in the cast! <3

Just the veins in an egg, but I guess technically it has been inseminated. I just assumed the Fire Sisters had them because they're supposed to be a set of developing Araragis.

Guilty Crown doesn't give a shit about the Void mechanic making sense.
How does the missile work, anyway? Aren't Voids supposed to disappear when they aren't being held? Same for the boomerang in episode 16.

You could just say
Gai's
works differently. As for the
boomerang, there's probably a bit more leniency with range based weapons.

Why was the boomerang stuck to the ceiling, though? And what about the non-ranged Void that was destroyed in the same scene? Shouldn't it have disappeared as soon as the girl let it go?

The only real rule to Voids is: "Voids are able to do whatever is necessary for the contrived, melodramatic scenario the writers want Shu to suffer through."

The new
fairy has a shield powerful enough to stop the badguy's most powerful attacks, cool
.

The story for this episode was pretty weak overall, at least next episode is the reveal of
the new precure!

Smile Precure 2 - 4

Episode 2
Dat hairplosion

Episode 3
Dat dangerous amount of HNNG

Episode 4
Dat hair flipping Sailor Jupiter.

Fairly standard character introductions so far, I like how they have self awareness with their transformations and attacks and it doesn't look like the show is taking itself seriously with the format which is always a plus with these types of shows.

So does this mean you liked Saori, or not because she was secretly
a bishoujou-sama?

Have you've watched Code Geass before?

I feel cheated,
the third precure didn't appear. :(

The third Fairy is sickeningly cute.

It looks like
the third precure will finally appear
next episode.
