Guild Wars 2 Press Beta [Prepurchase Is Live]

I'm not quite there yet, but I find myself itching to play more and more throughout the day. Not just in a "Gee, I wish I could play Guild Wars 2 now" kinda way, but more of a "Everything sounds boring, I think I'll go check for new GW2 news again."

I'll probably start having dreams about it when we get closer to launch. Right now it's still kind of off in the future, but when we have a solid date? I'm gonna be playing it all night and waking up to disappointment.

Yeah I'm gonna start having dreams about it closer to the beta.

It's my birthday on the 13th. And I check for GW2 stuff EVERY DAY. I practically live in this thread; I rarely if ever check neogaf proper any more (except for say, like nintendo stuff).

The Build stuff we're doing is just killing time with what we have available - we're actually mentally preparing ourselves for the challenge, nay, the indomitable avalanche of customization that will befall us as we dive face first into the swirling sea of the abilities of this game.

It's as if we're gonna have sex for the first time again. Nervousness!

Man i've been so busy with work that I literally have about the last 5 pages to read and go over cause Jira is always posting so many good things. DAMN YOU JIRA

.

Jira, Retro and I are destroying this thread, lol!

You had a squishy necro with no points in toughness (for armor) that relies on CQC. I'm not saying it isn't a good build but there is the possibility that you would be taken out quickly with such low defense. No malice also means you lose condition damage which is what the necro does best in the game (you are also using them).

I'm not saying I'm right but spreading yourself thin is not the idea here.

The plan is that Necro having the 2nd highest HP pool in the game will make up for that toughness, as well as Death Shroud being a 2nd life bar (hence the 30 points into soul reaping).
Also theres the life steal, and the fact that I can set up runes and what not to make up for the loss in toughness.
I just don't see why I should put 10 or so points for a (probably) small increase in durability, especially since that tree has almost no traits I want.

Of course, if the build turns out to be ass, I'll change it.

"Call in your fellow thieves for combat support. "

Since it's an elite skill, I'm thinking maybe it does something cool like summon a bunch of ninjas to attack your target and vanish. Found a youtube video of it; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqnvO3NTXHM&hd=1&t=2m38s.
It appears to summon 2 AI-driven Thieves.

Edit: Shite, sorry for the double post.
Edit 2: Found a video of it.
i ve said this before, but thief class is the best class.

I believe 100 toughness would be ~10-20% of level 80 max. Though I'm way too lazy to find out the max att points. But I don't believe it to be a small increase considering the cast rates. In GW2, that might be the equivalent of gifting an extra attack to the opposition every ~8-10 seconds. And most other lines can't make up for that with runes.

IDK but the stress is that runes are used to give individualism to att points. So I can't image that ignoring a category like armor or health is inconsequential.

Who knows, you might be right, but the Death Magic trait tree, the one that raises toughness for Necros, has nothing I want. Its geared towards Necros with minions.
Also I have 20 points in Blood to raise my HP up even more.
If anything I'll take 10 out of Spite and put 10 into Curses for some more condition damage.
We'll see how it plays out when the game finally drops. :3

Heres a good list of runes.

ATI Radeon HD 4350. Any good?

You should be able to play it on low settings. It could possibly run a little slow in WvW though when there is a lot of dudes casting spells.

Hope you get in to the beta so you can try it out though, if it runs bad you can always get a cheap used card on ebay or something if you want to upgrade a little.

Good to know. Any cheap video card suggestions?

Awww man from all the hype and stuff surrounding this I was hoping it wasn't another tab target and use skills type mmo... -.- Well it's free to play so that will be a perk for everyone. I'm too entranced by tera :) so I'll be having fun with that.

I'd recommend upgrading to an ATI Radeon HD 5770/6770 (same card, different numbers) if it's possible, would be a great budget efficient upgrade for your system. :)

I'd say wait until the game comes out

By the time it does you'll be able to get something good/great for $100-200

You haven't looked into the game enough if you think its tab target AT ALL.

Got any great video suggestions? I really do want to see more but from the stuff I've seen it still looks like a flashy version of the standard target stystem. I rather not be right about that. :)

It's more like the game has the trappings of regular tab target mmos, but they made it a hell of a lot more action-y. In fact, if they wanted to, they could make it like TERA but I think it fits more their style and gets people into it easier.

You do lock onto targets, but there's real time dodging, a ton of ground-targeted skills, attacks with actual hitboxes, and projectiles that don't magnetically follow their targets. The AI is also designed in such a way that standard MMO tactics won't work - Aggro doesn't really force mobs too attack anyone, and enemies can pick out who's vulnerable and chase them down.

:) thanks that description of it is how I felt it looked. Was thinking it was something else after the comment. Not a bad thing in general I was just hoping it completely broke the standard mold.

The combat pushes the box so far it's almost broken, though - and EVERYTHING ELSE the game does that no other MMO can do. TERA's only draw IMO is the combat. Everything else is standard fare.

This is probably the best video of gameplay I've seen of GW2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbxhKqzka30

You can target stuff in this game, but it's not really used like it is in other hotkey MMOs. I don't know if the game would work with TERA's free targeting based on what I played this past weekend; classes in GW2 are probably an order of magnitude more complicated even on the simplest scale. Some of it wouldn't work with free targeting.

And I think the complexity is there only because of the adherence to the targeting system. Making the game into an action game would limit abilities and what they do.

Also fucking Elementalist has some of the coolest looking abilities. Comets? Meteors? Icicles of awesome? Fuuuuuck man!

And that dagger combo - Elementalist Melee? tha fuck?

(I might actually play an elementalist like that.)

EDIT: fuck that fuck that

Command the Sword to strike the ground at its location damaging nearby foes. This destroys the sword.

It's just damage. :[

Still pretty good because it's an aoe hit - and spirit weapons cause burning with my build, so burn enemies - hit dat aoe whirlwind - profit!

Also Jira I found the Shelter skill on a video, the player has a huge shield around them front and back while they remain motionless and heal themselves. The block duration is 2 seconds, which means if someone is targeting you, you can dodge roll forward after healing.

I think a HUGE difference in this game will be melee dodge rolling forward into people coming at them. Most people will assume you will dodge roll back or to the side.

I plan to use dodge to get into melee, along with my leaps.

Okay. We can hope it's just the settings used.

I think this needs to be addressed in the OP or something - it comes up way too often in the thread.

"is graphic settings low? what about shadows? the game looks like shit!"

The Press had to play on low settings to get the best framerates. Everything I've heard from TB and MikeB said the game ran amazing without fraps on.

Where's mah total biscuit!?

I read he's putting stuff out tomorrow (the 1st).

Yeah actually I think stuff like shields and whatnot will be amazing for creating blocks in choke points, not just healing or whatever. People need to start thinking outside the box with this game or they're gonna fall behind those that do.

Dammit...I have a Necro build but I look at it for what I want to do and I think GOD so many choices, I have no idea which way to actually go. I REALLY need to get my hands on this damn game to see how my builds play out. Oh and about a month ago I had a dream about the new Trait system before it was revealed...the idea in my dream was quite genius, but I couldn't remember every detail when I woke up.

I remember reading from a Dev that in a fight a player came up, rolled into the way of an attack, hit the block button, and blocked all the damage the previous player was going to take, and it made him just go "wow" as the game's systems interacted with each other.

Also:

Bonus Experience - When you kill an enemy in the world, you might see 5 xp + 2 xp pop up . What this means is you’ll gain bonus experience depending on how long an enemy has been alive in the world, which gives you even more incentive to explore.

WTF? I never knew about this. THIS IS AWESOME. Find some rare spawn random dude at the end of some crazy cave? MAD XP!

And IIRC they said the art team was STILL making additions and caves and secret spots all over Tyria in the game... jesus dude... there's so much.

This game has been baked for so long it's beyond done - it's being chiseled out of awesomeness

Lol, yeah he was gushing withing seconds of getting in game.

It was apparently on their TWIMMO podcast and even the Dev interview. Guy is literally exploding with hype.

I am sometimes, but it's like blips on a heart rate machine - some times it's flat for a second then it goes BLIP every time the hype surges

TB is gonna have a huge video covering all Warrior weapons except the axe, PvP, underwater combat, a jumping puzzle, and an explorable dungeon which he says is 2 hours long uncut, and they have 6 hours of WvW footage that he has to cut down as well. I think the Warrior video and the dungeon might be coming today for sure, dunno about WvW.

daaaaaaaamn! I need to watch it all!

Ahh finally... Ive been waiting for TB's videos all week :-)

Fix yo link!
Worked fine for me. But I am on a mobile device.

Also I still can't imagine how hard it will be to play Good/pro Mesmer esp since I haven't seen any good mesmer gameplay. I mean like staff and pistol combo sound badass in concept, but I can't see that actually working out.

Fixed

Mesmer is, I believe from watching it play, extremely positional and utilizes the movement and actions of the combat system more than any other class - illusions everywhere, incredibly random condition attachment, just absolute confusion back and forth if you set it up right, especially if you move and your illusions confuse your foe terribly.

Everything I've heard from PVP in WvW or what have you has said when fighting a Mesmer, it's goddamn hard. They will trick the shit out of you with phantasms and clones, and picking the right one will be tough.

It's a little like the Psionicist class in Allods - that class also had a lot of fun confusing people with clones and invis and such. It's really frustrating for the opponent.
