Hellsing Ultimate OVA IX]

The Hellsing Ultimate OVA series is, by and large, enjoyable hokum. Hokum, because the storyline and characters and extremely over the top and silly but it was still enjoyable, because it was well made and therefore fun to watch. This instalment, however, was just ugly, messy, hokum.

What do I mean by that? Well, I'm calling it ugly because of the slap-dash combination of animation choices. We've got 'regular' animation, hella CG looking CG animation and stylized CG animation. None of these types of animation are pulled of well at any point, and sometimes they're mixed together in a rather unseemly fashion. Oh, and the background art is pretty bad as well. All of this adds together to a collection of moving images that isn't that nice to look at, apart from a few nice shots of the characters from time to time. Yet, even here, it's like there's no director of photography, or anyone with any skill at composition, to craft an image that's actually pleasant to look at or that takes advantage of the medium of animation.

It says there's quite a bit of a problem with a Hellsing Ultimate episode when even the action sequences aren't that well animated. Not that being poorly animated is the only problem with these fight scenes - they're kind of a mess thanks to some really terrible editing that doesn't link shots together in any kind of logical fashion. There is practically no 'flow' to these fights, often it's just an incoherent jumble of shapes and images moving around. Even the effects animation is really flat and boring.

This bad editing extends to the episode as whole, I'm afraid. As you might imagine, the overall 'flow' of the episode isn't that tangible (in other words, there's no rhythm setting the pace of the story) but more importantly individual sequences, not just fight sequences, are hard to decipher because of the incoherent editing. What was that selection of images all about, and why did it go past so fast? Sometimes the camera will linger on an establishing too long, or not at all, or a conversation will apparently go on forever. There's no consistency here. It kind of reminds of Steins;Gate episode 1, which is about the worst insult that I could dish out.

So while we're on the subject of adaptation vs source, what's everyone's take on faithful reimaginings? Should I not feel so much like shit from Shin Mazinger's ending because it ended at the worst possible point?

I'm not going to get excited until there's some concrete details to get excited about, but if true that would put a capstone on what looks to be a crazy spring season, especially if the Koike rumors pan out.

If there is a Lupin TV show, it is pretty much confirmed to have character designs by Koike; Osami Kobayashi himself confirmed it on Twitter.

Didnt see that but I will forever dislike the way Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, Soul Eater, and Blue Exorcist didnt remain faithful to the sources.
Ending before the best parts for Fai and Kurogane, or the way everyone evolved around Rin, especially Shima, and Soul Eater, well 60 chps too early*

It's sad seeing Morita-san besmirched by this shota show. :(
I take it that it's the same people or something.

The question is whether or not anime is marketing for the manga or if it should exist as its own text. At this point, I don't know any more.

Just watched guilty crown 19 and... man, these last few episodes have been intense. The first 13 episodes were tame in comparison to the 2nd part. I was so-so on the series before, but each episode has me firmly enthralled at this point.

Stellvia of the Universe 7

Drama? In my Stellvia? It's more likely than you'd think.
At least I think I saw drama some there. It's really hard to tell, as this show seems determined to stay positive. Several of the main cast have difficulties that they manage to work through this episode, if for no other reason than to shed a little light on their own character for the viewer.

Kouta (Shima's potential love interest) who has been up untill now something of a talented enigma (like Usui Takumi only without the continuity destroying superpowers) shows hesitancy to join the day's training which involved combat manuevers. Given the hints, it's not too difficult to imagine that he has had tragedy in the past, though it makes one wonder why he's on Stellvia to begin with.

Arisa mentions her low grades in comparison to Shima's strangely good ones. Let's face it, if I was worse at piloting than Shima I'd feel like shit too. Shima get's worried Arisa will leave Stellvia, but Arisa promises that'll never happen. Shima cries (this happens alot), but I have to confess it was a touching moment. How Arisa went from "pretend best-friend" to "actual best-friend" has been something this show has portrayed really well.

Yayoi, who I remember the name of because I pronounce it yaoi, doesn't fare too great in the training either, having flashbacks of a previous accident which caused her to quit Stellvia once. She determines to do better, spurred on by Shima and her other fellow moe pilot chick comrades.

What else happened this episode? Comedy mostly and hints of romance and rivalry. Oh yeah and plenty of action, indeed the second half of the episode was entirely devoted to it. If you recall, last episode we got Astroball, which was a tough act to follow. This time round it isn't the Chocobo Hot and Cold in Space I was hoping for, but instead "Lightning Joust".

Look at all the phalic imagery!

This is Stellvia's equivilent of Air Jousting, ala Ken and Shin from North Star. Only you know, with spaceships.

Shima takes on one of the "Big Four" with the space-battleship equivilent of an unevolved starter Pokemon (the Bianca) and
manages to survive three passes before being beaten, making her one of the best in the class. She takes the loss pretty bad though, having closed her eyes at the last second and ends up crying again. Fortunately Arisa followed by the end credits spare us from getting too much wangst.

Yayoi comes out on top though, showing her additional year's experience and determination to do better. She beats a "Big Four" member in the first pass with only Bulbasaur. Much to her delight and that of Class Stellvia.

I enjoyed this episode a lot. Then again, I like positivity in my anime, so it's been a perfect fit so far. Of course things will inevitably get serious, but unless the plot was secretly conceived of by CLAMP, I don't think that over-all outlook will change.

well, we pretty much never agree on anything, so that's not surprising much. I will bring up whatever tangents I feel like, miri, and you are free to ignore them (i.e. not get lost) as you please.

If they continue, they continue, if they don't, they don't. They are not the same. Not sure what the point of making a work in a different medium would really be. That is a line I'm drawing - where's yours, the name "Usagi Drop"? It's a faithful adaptation, not an identical one (though identical remakes like Psycho '98 are still different works even within the same medium), that chooses to stop at different point. The ending is fundamental to the work. Just because the movie A Clockwork Orange leaves off the last chapter doesn't mean you can fill in the ending, etc

Haha, it really isn't. I still love ya though, Icarus. Your perspective always does keep things interesting. We'll just have to keep tradition and agree to disagree here as well. I do understand where you're coming from though.

I'm gonna run Nichijou and Nichibro alongside it for that Comedy Trifecta.

...That's too much funny, man. Haha, godspeed, soldier.

Did you like the ringtone and/or play Catherine?

I did like the ringtone, and not yet for Catherine. It's been, oddly enough, in my the back of my mind for the longest time. I was actually trying to dust it off before the barrage of March hit, but it doesn't seem as if I'm getting that done. Mass Effect 3/Devil Survivor 2 too strong.

Black Rock Shooter 5

This was the most watchable episode so far because stuff actually happened. Still have a lot to explain before the show is over though.

Insane Black Rock Shooter would have been a nicer twist if the Figma hadn't made it blatantly clear she'd show up.

Black★Rock Shooter 5

Finally!
A connection and a slap in the face!

That wasn't so bad. Cool action scenes...
And maybe a sign that the second half of the series will be more focused in the Black Rock Shooter world instead of in the Batshit Crazy Girls world.

What was that conversation, though?

"You have to die in the other world for the suffering to stop!" "NO U DONT LOL" "URE RITE U DONT LOL" *Surprise yuri*

Guilty Crown 19
I laughed when
Shu's void took form for his arm
I mean.. that's how they came up with it? Also
insane looking guy just turning out to be some insane guy was very lame and predictable
...At least we got cool poses this week?

Aside from the student council pres needing to be a bit higher, those character rankings line up with nicely with my own. Karasawa, Tadakuni, Kings.

Guilty Crown - 19

That was... watchable, which only means to highlight how by the numbers it is.

Black Rock Shooter - 05

This whole episode had me going "wut", at least the action scenes were good.

Well it was bound to happen eventually. o_O

Apparently, some people are calling Guilty Crown the second coming of Code Geass. While I personally like the series right now, it doesn't really live up to Code Geass.

I think that's what everyone thought it would be. From it's staff to the "power of kings" gimmick. It has definitely not lived up to expectations.
This looks fucking terrible.
Day one.
I thought the same thing rofl

So there's yet another show that'll be premiering in April: Furusato Saisei Nihon no Mukashi Banashi. I doubt anyone here will be interested in it, since it looks like a simple retelling of Japanese folk stories to children, but it's another one to add to the list.

If there is a Lupin TV show, it is pretty much confirmed to have character designs by Koike; Osami Kobayashi himself confirmed it on Twitter.

That's nice to know, though I'm more interested in who would be directing and animating those character designs.

The question is whether or not anime is marketing for the manga or if it should exist as its own text. At this point, I don't know any more.

Even if an anime is created for the sole purpose of advertising the manga, it still exists and can be engaged with as a separate text.

BRS 5

Well the action was good.

I look forward to watching the sakuga video.

Guilty Crown 19

That was ok. Although...

"He may die!"

*Absolutely nothing happens*

You know that's now how shounen-y anime works. If something
may kill you, it doesn't necessarily do it instantly. The series has 5 or so episodes left so this might be a countdown death.

edit: Oops. Double post. How the hell did an Edit become a new post anyway? Ugh.
