FF13 is the worst grindfest Ive ever seen. I WANT to complete it but the sheer thought of playing it ever again turns me into a lunatic.

GTA 4 is the most overrated game of all time.

Mario franchise should die. Last good Mario game was Mario 64.

Games like CoD, God of War and Halo are a disgrace to good gaming taste and their success says alot about the average kiddo gamer.

Fallout 3 is the best Bethesda game.
 
- God of War serie might be one of the most overrated pieces of trash i've ever played. Shitty main character, shitty gratuitous violence, laughably puerile gameplay, terrible structure, one of those cases in which games are made to "shock" and "awe" a certain part of the gaming press and demographics, succeeding at that but still remaining horrible videogames

- Darksiders is hella overrated. Sure, it's a decent game with satisfying combat and lenght by today's standards but I laugjh my ass off whenever I see someone saying drivel like "It's what Zelda should have been". If Zelda was that mediocre it might very well be time to bury the franchise

- Hardcore sport - including fighting- games fans. Buying a rad arcade joystick just to be so damn spectacular at a videogame makes me lol everytime

- Fallout: New vegas is way worse than FO3. It's got some really horrendously designed NPCs (Caesar's legion), a lifeless, absolutely non-appealing setting and landscapes and a shitty storyline

I don't care much about competitiveness either, but fighting (and many arcade) games are actually much more enjoyable to play with a proper joystick.

There is undoubtedly an inherent charm that comes with a Nintendo IP; music, characters, sound effects etc, but Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 display rock-solid and immensely satisfying mechanics, wonderfully weighted physics, superlative technical proficiency, near boundless creativity and masses of content.

They don't get praised for displaying "The N Factor", they are praised for being among the very best 3D platformers available, if not the very best. The Nintendo icing is just a bonus.

Yes, you fail to see. That about sums it up, doesn't it? As already mentioned above, it has nothing to do with Nintendo or even Mario and everything with just being very good games.

"Just going round in a circle"? I mean, if you don't dig them, cool, but that's like saying all you do in football games is run back and forward, or all you do in shooters is walk and fire bullets. Racers have the fundemantal and universal thrill of speed, if nothing else.

I think this whole calling jrpg fans pedophiles is starting to get out of hand here. It's not really healthy for actual debate.

Yeah I find the character design extremely questionable (and horrible) in most japanese games but I'm not going to automatically assume everyone who enjoys those games are pedos that Japan caters to. And I'm not even going to begin to pretend that I understand japanese culture or why they apparently like that design. I'm sure it goes a lot deeper than "everyone's a pedo!".

I like IGN, and listen to most of their podcasts.

I would rather be bored than play Skyrim. After Oblivion, I'm done with that series. I played 150 hours of Oblivion before I realized none of the game was fun, and the world and its populace were trite. Played a couple hours of Skyrim and quit.

I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII. I think Uncharted is neat, but overrated; inFamous is the by-far better PS3 series. I have put down every Bioware game around 5-10 hours in out of boredom. Ico was meh. Halo's shooting doesn't feel satisfying, which makes it nearly impossible to like the game. The MannCo update, and everything following, killed Team Fortress 2 for me. Defense Grid: Awakening is boring, the music puts me to sleep and the low res graphics hurt my eyes.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is the best game Square's made since FFX, and both are better than FF7. I've had no desire to go back to Donkey Kong Country Returns, since completing the first 1.5 areas.

I don't think JRPGs are usually the problem. It's usually stupid things like a mediocre scrolling shooter that happens to have scantily clad girls in it.
 
Metroid deserves a sequel which builds on the Other M control scheme and gameplay. I loved the way Samus moved, the 2D -> 3D exploration was great (if underutilized), controls were awesome (dodges were a bit too unpunishing, though), and the combat was really satisfying and fun.

Build a sequel by keeping all of above, giving Samus a few new items to the series (Other M had practically none), having better level design, better music, and removing the focus on story and cutscenes completely or at least to Fusion's levels and then we'd have a contender to Super Metroid / Metroid Prime level of quality.

It's a lot to improve but I do think Other M was at the end a very good game. The internet leads you to believe that the story was such a big flaw that it marred completely the game, but I was able to filter out most of it without much trouble. I don't care if I get the items myself or if someone "authorizes" me to use them. Level design, music and the items were greater flaws than the (indeed) bad story.

Wasn't someone banned for saying something like this? Well, either I hope you stay out of threads I like. I mean I truly dislike those who already feel the need to label those who like other things. It's pretty stupid to have pre-convinced notions of people like that. I'm not sure how I'm a child molester or a weaboo because I like jrpgs.

The GBA version has a permanent save after castle / fortress and one time, repeatable save anywhere you want.

It's a long game overall but the short levels, combined with saving your progress anywhere you want, work perfectly on the GBA.

As far as Mario, my post is my opinion. So yes, I "don't get it", they're just not that good.

Even though I really like Colors/Generations, I still have to disagree with this. Both games were fun but they were still kind of flawed. (Generations much more flawed IMHO). With that said though, I'm looking forward to Sonic Team's next Sonic game. (Sonic 4 doesn't count, that's Dimp's game). But what Modern Sonic games do you consider that are on par with the originals? Curious.

- GoW is to lame. Especiall the Gameplay. Other games do it already better.

- San Andreas is the best GTA and not VC. PERIOD.

- The celshading Prince of Persia is the best one of the series.

At this point it would be more controversial to say:

Uncharted is underrated. Best game series evar, on any platform.
 
Pokemon, past the original three, are only good when it's in a spin-off. Pinball, Snap, and soon + Nobunaga's Ambition . Most of the spin-offs are bad too, but at least they try something to be different.

Emotions and breeding ruined the fun aspect of the RPGs.

Nintendo should copy Toys for Bob's idea with Skylanders to truly take all the money from Pokemon fans.
 
The whole "JRPGs are for child molesters" is pretty rude, but something has to be said when I see a cartoon teen/tween in a Japanese game and instinctively dread it.

The thing with Mario games is that the market has stopped trying to put out competing platformers. Mario Galaxy 1, 2, and 3D Land are pretty much the only high budgeted 3D platformers we have (Ratchet and Clank have become third person shooters, with EXTREMELY simple platforming mechanics, before you say anything.) I guess it's okay, because I disagree that those are bad games and even if they were to have characters of an equal quality of art direction they'd still be considered incredible games.

Not with Zelda though. It's interesting to watch a franchise sink in quality right before your eyes (in the middle of Wind Waker) and watch as it worsens with each iteration. Thankfully Darksiders came out, and I really hope that Darksiders 2 isn't going to suffer from "we had to cut our budget 80% in development due to THQ's sudden death. Enjoy your broken game with no ending."

Oh also, playing through Farcry 2 again. It really was the greatest game of 2008, and definitely up there in one of my favorite games of this generation. It doesn't get everything right, but it's brave as hell and there's a great amount of polish to what was made, the kind of polish that makes those "player-authored experiences" stronger than what you'd see from the STALKER or Elder Scroll series. What other games allow you to shoot out a man's legs and watch him fall into a river to drown to death?

VVV Ah! I meant 3D Platformers. We have plenty of 2D ones these days.
 
Sonic and Rayman are still around, both good again. We do need more platformers though for competition though.

They get a free 100/100 pass, because of perfect gameplay + controls. Replace Mario with anyone else - still 100/100 material.

In comparison Rayman Origins - fantastic art direction, nice gameplay *but* the controls have some serious flaws. I would really love to get a game that looks like Rayman Origins, but plays like New Super Mario Bros Wii

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had a really good soundtrack (one of the few interesting things about the campaign and that was absent from MW3). Also "No Russian" was one of the most interesting moments in recent videogame history, at least as far as presentation goes.

Being called a child molester is more offending than most racial slurs, especially when tied to some of Japanese taste. Yet exactly that has happened several times in this thread (and often enough on NeoGAF altogether).

The most immature thing about Lollipop Chainsaw are the people afraid of how they will look or what others will think when they buy it.

I already posted this, but JRPGs are most but practically all derivatives of Dragon Quest.
DQ is huge in Japan, huge. RPG developers there would be stupid not to copy it.

Also, Lollipop Chainsaw is totally unoriginal and a huge waste of Suda51's time and studio. It has been made nine times already as "The Oneechanbara". Which is the same game with swords instead of chainsaws, and nine games.

New Vegas isn't a Bethesda game. It's Obsidian, hence the superior game.

I agree that jrpgs are a thing of the past. As a n64 owner I used to look at the psx jrpg-catalouge with envy. The games were grand in scope and seemed to offer a true cinematic adventure with the fmv's and 40 hour completion times. So I played a lot of them when I got a PS2 and man, have I gotten sick of the thoroughly shitty story-telling, characters, writing and gameplay. Now that technology is more advanced, games don't have to sacrifice gameplay for scope and so, I have no interest in jrpgs whatsoever. They bore me to tears within an hour, and the genre-conventions and terrible dialouge makes me cringe.

I don't know if that's even controversial as many seems to be of the same opinion. I guess it has something to do with growing older as well.

It is ok for you to dislike JRPGS, don't get me wrong. I am not an ardent fan myself, especially not for those on home consoles. However trying to attribute it to growing older seems a little off. If by that, you mean that you haven't the time any longer to devote to what tends to be one of the longest play-time genres, then fine. However if you are saying they are a childish genre, that seems far too broad a generalisation.

The homogeny of JRPGs is vastly overplayed. Look at Final Fantasy XIII/2 next to Xenoblade, or Dragon Quest IX, or the latest Tales game, Pokemon, Mother 3 or Persona 3/4. Obviously I am showing the most famous JRPGs of recent times, but the point is that there is such a huge amount of diversity in the setting, atmosphere, mechanics, music and art, that I find such generalisations ridiculous.

In summary, there are many derivative and dull JRPGs, but the same can be said of most genres, especially FPS/TPS'. I feel that with the advance of technology and western development, the quality of the average JRPG has declined relative to the wider market, but there is still a tremendous amount of well-made games in the genre to satisfy anyone. Just take the time to find the right one. :)

I didn't put enough context into it. I disliked Obsidian's New Vegas, so the fact that I finished it and yet still enjoyed Beth's Fallout 3 to an extent of liking it above all other Beth games came to surprise me.

Sonic the Hedgehog games are terrible, and unlike Mario, have never really adapted to the 3D world.
 
I'm pretty much done with 3D Zelda's. I've beaten everything up to Skyward Sword (OoT, MM, WW and TP), but I have no interest in SS. Maybe in a few years, but not right now.

Overhead Zelda's are still fair game.
 
Anamanaguchi should be more looked upon when making videogame music, western studios use too much ambience and complexity, but not enough melody, they should look to them, and to NES era music.
