NFL Off-Season Thread: "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"

Well, they do have a shitload of useless leagues, teams and games. One of the reasons I prefer football is actually that every game counts for something.
Maybe I shouldn't say that while spending months in an empty thread, waiting impatiently for the off-season to end...
I don't think the one sport that actually plays a balanced home-and-home league schedule can be accused of having "meaningless" games. They have separate cup competitions, which have a clear pecking order.

It's more a function of the fact that there's the Premier League, the SPL, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, etc. Way more countries involved in the sport. All of the other threads are wholly domestic.

Here's the full story and quotes from Banks in addition to what BigAT posted:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...s-saints-bounty-hunting-nfl-article-1.1032862

“I never offered my teammates something to hurt somebody or take them out,” Banks said. “I wouldn’t do that and I don’t think there are five guys in the league who would do that now. But am I telling you that if we had a big game against a big opponent, that I might go over to someone on special teams before a kickoff and say, ‘A thousand bucks for the first guy to take (the return man) down inside the 20?’ I absolutely am saying that I did that — and that it happens all the time.”

To Banks, the distinction between a reward for a good hit and a hit that hurts somebody and takes them out of the game is almost impossible to distinguish. The NFL determined that the Saints rewarded those who caused injuries to opposing players.

“It’s a physical sport by nature,” Banks said. “It’s a violent sport by nature. Everybody out there has the intent to hit somebody hard. . . . You can’t legislate intent, if a guy makes a hard, clean hit that is within the rules.

Banks said that he knows his opinions may not sit well with fans who don’t understand the culture of violence that is as much a part of football as the 50-yard line. It’s not as if he’s saying it’s fine to go out and try to hurt people. He’s simply saying that in a sport in which teams that hit the hardest, and are the most punishing, prevail, you can’t be surprised when players want to inflict the biggest hit they can.

As for Williams’ involvement, Banks said, “I don’t know the specifics of what Gregg Williams did, but it’s not as if they had body bags on the sidelines in New Orleans.”

To Banks, the biggest issue here is that the NFL undertook its investigation into the Saints’ bounty hunting to begin with.

“The fact that it ever got out of the locker room is shameful,” Banks said.

Giants great Mark Bavaro also chimed in with similar comments:

“I’m sure it happened all over the league,” Bavaro said. “I know defenses are always looking to knock guys out of the game. If you look at it from a common-sense standpoint, offensive players get incentives for catches and yardage and whatever. What can your incentive be on defense other than hitting people and hurting people? That’s what they’re out there to do. I don’t have a problem with it.”

Well, I only know about the Bundesliga. That's 34 regular season games, giving you 3 points each for a total maximum of 102 points. That's too much of a range to guarantee you that every game has a purpose, IMO. Add to that all the cup games and the games on an international level, and it's way too many games for my liking. Especially when there's only very little parity. Something like the AFC West this year with every team within a game of the division lead is very rare.

Dunno, I was a hardcore soccer fan when I was between maybe 8 and 11 years old. Then I started to really dislike it, for whatever reason. By now I watch like 10 games per year, including stuff like the world cup.

any word if the chiefs are going to franchise Dwayne Bowe?

and are the steelers going to keep Mike Wallace? cutler's got the big arm to throw him the long ball.

if neither guy is available i'd prefer for the bears to draft michael floyd from notre dame. i'd hate to see them break the bank for vincent jackson, who would be like moose mohammed 2.0.

How does every league game not have a purpose? It's the best regular season set up as you play a home-and-home with every team in your league. Every point matters, and it's a huge deal when you drop points against a shit team at home.

It makes juggling lineups interesting because different teams have different motivations. There may be an FA Cup game where one team's clearly out of the league so puts out their best 11, whereas the other team's within a few points of the league lead, so they play more conservatively.

The sport makes you to use your depth chart to the fullest.

But, yes, there are certainly a ton of random cups. Each league has at least has the league, the league cup, and a domestic cup competition of some sort with multiple divisions. Not to mention the Champions League and the Europa League.

My body is ready for the Euro Cup. I rarely watch soccer anymore, but that's gonna be fun.

Oh, we're so going to kick your asses.

I think only wednesday I fully realized how little I care about soccer anymore. I recognized like one name on the French team. I hope the loss helped our team to realize they're not invincible after all these wins.

Pulled this off of bleachereport(lol)

but..

For a team to sign Wallace away from the Steelers, they are going to have to offer him a contract that will pay him at least $12-$15 million in 2012. That is a big number for any team to absorb.

Add to that that they will have to give the Steelers their first-round pick this year, and the odds of another team going after him go down even further.

If that is true, I don't really think the chance of us losing him is as great as nfl-age been chanting the past few weeks.

I'm a very responsible person.

Greg - a majority of my posts are made while I'm sober.

I feel like I've given y'all a bad impression of what I am.
I'm just giving you shit man. I know that, and I'm sure everyone else does as well - just like we all know jakncoke should be picking for the Seahawks in this mock draft.

What's there not to get about inception? It's funny when people say its complex or something, it's pretty straight forward.

I would love to hear how it's a shitty movie. Acting was solid, good special effects, original premise, and what man doesn't enjoy a heist? I mean, opinions...how do they work? and all but to say it's shitty rather than you guys just didn't enjoy is just amusing to me. If you guys think the quality in a particular area was lacking, I'm all ears.

The most deficient quality seems to be your taste.

I think it's funny that this is how Olivia munn is trying to get attention back on her. Idk why the redhead did it.

I don't think they were necessarily purposeful. It's from a hacker who got access to their cell phone messaging history. Hendrick's were actually quite tame and cute (and MAGOD DEM TITS), but Munn is fucking horny as hell. They were from when she was dating Chris Pine. Chick is into throatfucking and anal. Me gusta.

Munns were definitely purposeful. She was going nowhere quickly.

How did I miss this? Hendricks... wow. Munn... gotta love those hobbies.

Decent movies that were over hyped get shit by haters and hateoraid spread across the net to think something is shitty. Also mindset of great or complete shit with no in between seems to be the problem with many.
