So I was watching TV and they showed a survey of normal human beings as to the top 10 characters in anime for people in their 20's to 40's.

The list (in no particular order):

1. Luffy (One Piece)
2. Sakuragi Hanamichi (Slam Dunk)
3. Son Goku (Dragonball)
4. Kenshirou (Fist of the North Star)
5. Tiger Mask (Tiger Mask)
6. Saebara Ryou (City Hunter)
7. Anpanman (Anpanman)
8. Amuro Rei (Gundam)
9. Lupin (Lupin the 3rd)
10 (I can't remember)

I was going to say it is, but after analyzing my top 10 anime list, it seems there's as much shounen in there than as anything else. Don't ask me how that happened.

How can I be elitist now?
The truth is, all anime is bad in some way and to some one. I've long realized that the moment you start tiering anime genres is the moment you go down the douchebag rabbit-hole.

I said it last time and I'll say it again, Taichi has improved and grown a lot. Still not enough for me to switch teams, but the dislike I had for his personality and character at the start of the series is basically gone and now I can respect him.

What about sub-genres? I think we can (mostly) all agree that the harem sub-genre is low tier. Then again, I suppose Sturgeon's Law applies to sub-genres too.

Nah. I enjoy harems once in a while.

I think sturgeon's just applies to 'everything' as a whole and you should just take what you like.

How is harem a sub-genre? It's established enough to have it's own wiki page.

Anyway, no, there is no such thing as a genre, sub or otherwise, that is all bad.

You'll get someone who will bring up UY (which I assume is a harem anyway) and even then, there are people who genuinely see merit in something "grungy" like SnO. There's going to be stand-out shows in every genre that allows you to either argue for or against it.

For example:

Strawberry Panic = yuri is shit.
Aoi Hana = yuri is good.

In general, the standard of quality in harems is considerably lower than that of other genres, but it's not all bad. I'm struggling to think of good examples outside of the obvious (Tenchi Muyo OVA, Ai Yori Aoshi, ZnT, Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari etc) but they do exist.

Ai Yori Aoshi is not in any way "good". They took what could have been a nice slice of life romance and turned it into that. It was character stereotype after character stereotype after characterstereotype . I have no idea why Aoi could have stood by self-insert dude after all of that.

Actually looking through your list, they're all pretty bad. Isekai is good? Really?

I was thinking about this the other day, have I missed something, or did we get to see who the guy (the director?) behind the heaps of books in Baccano is?

The Wikipedia page even calls it a sub-genre.

I never said there was.

Well, yes. That's why I brought up Sturgeon's Law.

Well that's like your opinion man.

I never said they were good though, just good "examples" of not bad harem anime. As stated, I was struggling to think of any to justify the point that no genre is inherently bad.

Isekai was fairly well received and has a high score on MAL and other places. I wasn't that impressed by it personally, but that's another issue.

I did like Tenchi Muyo, ZnT and somewhat AYA. If you can think of better examples of harems that aren't trash, then by all means.

Anyway, good and above harems:

God tier
Sora no Otoshimono

Great tier
Kemekko DX

Good tier
Maburaho
Green Green
MM!
Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka
Inukami
Negima
Maken-ki

God Tier Harem: Sora no Otoshimono (manga, no comment on the anime*)

Shit Tier: Most Other Things

Kusomatsu Tier: Love Hina

*More than anything else I hate how rubbery the art for that looks. The characters blush and shine everywhere.

I feel bad for anyone who can't appreciate Sora no Otoshimono as the triumph of imagination it is. (Manga)

e: lol, what did faridmon get banned for?

Not sure if serious.

Sora no Otoshimono is a worthy suggestion, but everything else...yikes. Maybe harem is the inherently shit genre.

Green Green is an abomination, a verruca on the foot of Japanese animation.

...did he just now get banned for this?

:lol

My first thought :lol

Firm but fair.

I was about to say, that's one way to go out.

Also IS brought us Char so i'm having a hard time disagreeing with that.

I think MF still acknowledges its existence. They just don't want to be associated with the writer anymore. I mean, they're releasing some kind of soundtrack for it this month.

Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos

That was a lot of fun. Art was great, the animation was great, and the choreography/direction for a few of the fights was amazing--The scene atop the trains, heading into table city. I'm not even the biggest fan of FMA--having watched portions of both series, finished neither--but I'd say this could be recommended to anyone. I definitely enjoyed myself with it.

If you're looking for good harem anime, you're mostly going to have to reach back to the classics: Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2 (at least the first season), original Tenchi Muyo OVA. There have been a couple more recent enjoyable shows, such as My Bride is a Mermaid/Seto no Hanayome, but most of them have been mediocre to bad.

Bloody hell if that's supposed to be the cream of the crop, good job highlighting how shit the genre is.

Makes me appreciate Ranma 1/2 more in how it bucks the trend, still got to climb that Yatsura Urusei mountain.

I recently watched a pretty fun harem show: Seto no Hanayome. Well, it's incredibly stupid (not to mention damn ugly) and borderline harem parody, but quite funny. It's also one of the few harem shows I've seen that actually has an ending.

And what an ending it was.

Also: Masa-san~

Soul Eater 45-51

So that's how you defeat a powerful Kishin? A Kishin that's powerful enough to whoop Death's ass?
......okay *shrug* But I will admit that seeing him go mad was pretty cool

But none of that matters anyway
cause Crona lived! But Medusa managed to survive YET again (seriously, why can't she just stay dead?!)

Overall: B+

Gotta find some new stuff to check out

I've always had interest in the genre.

What I mean is, I don't really trust Candy in Smile PreCure! yet, haha.
If only you were an young, optimistic girl with the potential to become a magical girl, then maybe you wouldn't be such a cynic. Now, do I have a proposal for you as any lovingly, trustworthy mascot!
