Winter 2012 Anime Thread 2.22: You Can (Not) Outpost Cajunator

Well I hope the One Piece high resolution reairings get streamed by Funimation or released, Im willing to even watch from episode 1, though this time in JPN instead of dubbed, especially the zoro and sanji join crew parts, my favorite.

Whoa, this is huge news. I was wondering when OP would go the Naruto shounen-hen route and it finally did.

And yes, it would be nice if Funi simulcasted them.

Even though I'm on Team Kaori Ishihara Kanna like many others here, I'm surprisingly not feeling that much rage right now. Maybe because I thought the Kaito/Ichika scene at the end was done nicely, maybe because there's still three episodes left to go. And yeah, remembering the glasses again was some good detail.
No matter what, though, Yukari Tamura Remon is the still the best.

At any rate, I'm still amazed by how much this show turned around from my view. Since episode four, each week has been equal to or better than the last.

Fuck you guys.

One of the biggest problems with film series like Final Destination is that you spend all of your time wondering who's going to die next, and what ridiculous method of dying it will be. It tends to destroy any sense of suspense, especially when this show telegraphs every death in advance so blatantly. The show's staff made a mistake by always having the death scenes at the end of each episode, this predictability ruins all sense of suspense because any 'fake death' scene in the middle of the episode will always be known to be fake well in advance, because the episode isn't nearly over yet!

The Calamity, such as it is, is clearly trolling the main characters at this point. Oh don't worry, I'm sure they'll repair the tape soon enough, only for it to be playing back after it's far too late to do whatever it is they were supposed to do.

Count me in the camp who strongly suspects that Izumi is the Another. Why else would she be so hellbent on finding a way to stop the Calamity? Everyone's been assuming that the Another is malicious and responsible for the Calamity. What if it's exactly the opposite? What if the Another comes back because he or she is looking for a way to stop the Calamity from occurring again? Izumi's insistence that she knows Kouichi from somewhere really places her under the most suspicion at this point.

It's almost amusing that Izumi is constantly giving Mei the stink-eye now, it's as if she suspects that Mei knows way more than she's letting on. A really long time ago in this show, Mei told Kouichi that her doll's eye lets her see things which should be unseen. If Izumi suspects that Mei knows she is the Another, she might be suspicious of Mei's motives, since Mei has thus far not given even the slightest indication about what knowledge she is seemingly hiding. Mei always seems so certain that nothing will happen to her, and is so detached as to almost be a disinterested bystander as the various people get gruesomely killed around her. She doesn't even count Kouichi among the immune, only herself.

That was a fairly solid episode, although
everyone's acceptance of the existence of aliens without being that impressed by it was kind of weird.

At least this story wont be overstaying it's welcome.

It looks like the end will be a little shitty because

*deleted spoiler from LNs*

Why would you highlight that spoiler? Hopefully you didn't =\

Because nobody else has been douchey enough to hide spoilers past what has already aired like they are "normal" spoilers. It takes a particularly special kind of douchebag to not indicate these are spoilers about stuff which occurs beyond what has already aired in the anime. Whenever I talked about something that I know has occurred AFTER the current episode of Mirai Nikki, I was always nice enough to label the spoiler as specifically past what has already aired. Everyone else has only been talking about what has already aired in their spoiler tags, and up until now everyone else has been pretty consistent about following this convention. I highlighted it because I was expecting a response to what I wrote, I wasn't expecting to have the fucking ending spoiled. :|

So you can go fuck yourself Pdot. I hope you
fall down a flight of stairs and get impaled in the neck by an umbrella and twitch for awhile while you die slowly.
That kind of shit has been warned about before too by ducky or Hito-chan or somebody.

Pandemonium-san, why are you so gross.? Those things are so off-putting it's nuts. Aside from that, that was another fun ep. Kagura's comment on the 'straight-man' is so true, lol.

Not cool, guys. Navigating spoilers is bad enough without someone hiding a spoiler within a spoiler.

The omnibus nature of the Animu-GAF seasonal megathread makes it impossible to easily separate spoilers pertaining only to the anime, or spoilers which are from the manga/novel/game/whatever. On AS, there are separate threads for talking about the anime itself, and talking about the manga/novel/game/whatever. You'll get a mod's foot up your ass at AS if you have gone ahead in the manga/novel/game/whatever and then go and spoil shit for the anime-only folks who are behind where you are in the story.

This shit should be completely obvious to anybody with a shred of common sense and decency, which I guess we can now exclude Pdot from having. If you're going to spoil shit that the anime-watchers won't know about yet, because the anime hasn't reached that point in the story, you fucking label that shit with THIS SHIT HASN'T HAPPENED YET IN THE ANIME SO DON'T HIGHLIGHT IT UNLESS YOU HAVE READ THE MANGA/NOVEL/GAME/WHATEVER. It's common fucking courtesy to do this, especially in something like Another which is obviously meant to be a mystery or whatever until the ending.

It has worked well (mostly) til now. In this case, someone was lazy to label their manga/novel/game spoilers sadly.

Hrm. Does that mean that the SnO and Hayate movies are bombas? I don't get how movie sales work.
I'm pretty sure the Hayate movie was already part of a bundle with one of the manga volumes at the end of last year, and this version is its first standalone release, plus it has a handful of new scenes or something like that. I don't know about SnO.

A 2 for 1 deal in this episode. It also followed the class trip reminiscence.
I was sure something was gonna happen to the tape, no way they were going to end up being able to listen to it so easily but damn if that wasn't an idiotic move by Teshigawara.

When is the second season of Horizon hitting? I can't remember if it is spring or summer!

Considering the Hayate and SnO movies had a theater count of like, 5, they're not exactly working with house money or anything.

So anime movies are just OVAs? :p

The Princess and the Pilot

ibat0z3g0iWApe.jpg

When a girl cleans your blood off of your cockpit window for you, you know you've found the one.

Before Madhouse died, they released this film about a blue-collar mercenary pilot assigned to a dangerous escort mission. His objective is to bring the empress-to-be, targeted by assassins, to the crown prince on the other side of the ocean. You can probably figure out the entire plot of the movie from that summary I just gave.

I'm going to be fairly critical here, so I should be clear: this isn't a bad movie. The storytelling is fairly competent. It's just that the movie could have easily been far more entertaining but for a few serious but correctable flaws.

The fictional setting for this story is two countries(with boring names I can't remember) are at war, in a world defined by aristocracy and WW II-esque planes. Also airships. Now, you might think that this kind of setting would provide the opportunity for some awesome dogfight sequences. Unfortunately, the movie has some of the worst CGI airplane animation in history. There is absolutely no sense of mass or power in the animation for these flying machines, a problem that's endemic to bad CGI. It's like watching toy planes fly. Also, I feel like if you're making a movie about planes, you should probably do some basic research about how they work. There's one sequence where the main character flies his plane straight upwards for at least a minute with no problems whatsoever. This careless attitude towards physics is applied throughout the whole movie. And certainly it seems as if G-forces don't even exist.

The character animation itself is also very disappointing for a full-length movie. It's essentially TV-anime quality. It seems as if Madhouse provided absolutely no budget for this film, though I guess that makes sense. I wouldn't give much money to the director of classic titles such as My Wife is a High School Girl either.

That's not to say the entire film looks bad. There are a few nice-looking explosions, but primarily, the background art is really quite nice. If there's one thing that's commendable about this film it's the cloud porn.

iBQ3y5J3mZzJ.jpg

ibpkCLIwoMGyhK.jpg

The random ginormous waterfall in the middle of the ocean is definitely the highlight of the film. The most creative and original idea the movie had, by far, as well as the most beautiful:

ibs4sID88fl0Dp.jpg

Of course, this is all water under the bridge if the story and characters are amazing. Unfortunately they're just as average as most everything else in the movie.

As I said before, you probably already know how the characters and story play out. The main character, Charles, is a fairly bland, former street urchin, who became a pilot because it allows him to be free. He's also a victim of RACISM because his father was from the enemy country. I don't know how everybody he meets knows this though because he looks exactly the same as everybody else. I guess word about some random pauper's family just gets around or... something? Anyway he naturally become the best pilot ever blah blah blah.

The princess is an insulated, strictly-trained, naive young woman whose only purpose in life is to improve her family's standing by marrying the crown prince. We all know where this is going. Of course there are some standard anime tropes applied to the story in order to make it worseimprove it, like
they actually met each other when they were children because his mom was the princess' servant.
That's not to say any of this is badly executed, to the director's credit there is actually some enjoyable character interaction at times, and he somehow even produces a feeling of tension in a couple of the awful CGI dogfight sequences.

The films's primary flaw is that it's just really generic and there's absolutely nothing in the story that differs from what you would expect. Well, actually there is one other flaw. ENDING SPOILERS:
The princess marries the dumb prince and never meets Charles again. Also, Charles throws away all of his reward money because honor or something. It's basically the worst ending possible and if I actually cared that much about the story I would be pissed.

iQ03QcaWqxvKP.jpg

I wish this crazy war-mongering guy had a bigger role in the story.

I couldn't stop thinking about Vetti when this guy talked.

Wait, since when do Samurai exist in this world?

And what kind of backwards country issues payments in gold dust?

Also the music is competent but unmemorable.

I think there should be a distinction between movie movies, like say Summer Wars or Letters for Momo (or the above Princess and the Pilot) that get wide release versus glorified advertisements like the SnO movie.
In that case, what is the K-On movie? lol

Not even comparable, and I can't believe how much people still lament that stuff being brought up here. How could it spoil the anime when the story never even gets that far and it has no bearing or impact on the anime? Another on the other hand is built on top of the mystery it constantly dangles over your head.

Fractale and Wandering Son had the lowest average at 1.76
BRS and Guilty Crown is currently at 1.86

It says so right in that link.

I'm pretty sure the K-On movie and, say, Disappearance, were created to make money from the get-go. They had good theater coverage so the comparison doesn't hold.

Hrm. So even non-Ghibli movies can make money in theatres?
