alex smith had 5 game winning TD drives in the 4th quarter last year. like i told you a few days ago, our offense does what it is asked to do. no one is debating that we played conservative but as you saw (or maybe didn't see) throughout the season, our offense can move the ball when it needs to.
our main issue was redzone offense. we were really hurt when braylon went down because we were basically stuck with receivers that are all 6'0 and under. there was no threat of the fade or lob and so teams were just able to crowd us and not have to commit people.
alex smith isn't a top 10 qb. he is a borderline top 15 qb. he misses the deep throws quite a bit (particularly to the left side line.... although he hit the one late against the saints), he doesn't take many chances unless he is backed into a corner (final drive of the game or something), he is sometimes inaccurate on ball placement.
what alex smith IS is athletic, he can make plays with his legs, when he gets into a grove he can move the ball well, he doesn't throw picks, he doesn't fumble, he has a really good grasp of the offense and is a good leader. he is also pretty clearly the best QB in the NFC west (unless peypey lands on the cards or chickens). if he leaves in FA then so be it
