Guild Wars 2 Press Beta [Prepurchase Is Live]

I find it peculiar that people are still debating or discussing the existence of a trinity in GW2, as in will one exist and have they truly erased it, or will people just be switching roles more often, etc.

The encounters, as in the boss fights and areas and mobs, aren't programmed with the trinity in mind so there really isn't a point to trying for a trinity in the game. The only reason the holy trinity works in an MMO is because the mobs are programmed to respond to the trinity design. If that's gone, the trinity doesn't have any advantage over other approaches.

This doesn't mean there won't be a point where people find a group build that works better than others. (The discord/spirit hero build in GW1 was a heavily used strategy that didn't function like a holy trinity. )

It is more of an academic at this point. I personally don't care because the impact on PvP is non-existent. Now, if there was a structured PvP system which pushed the [back/mid/front] line systems? Then, I would be a bit perturbed at the disruption of the caster/healer meta. It would just be a game of keep away with the squishes since everyone is self-contained; which would be asinine. WvW has too much scale and the AI will likely break most of its use in PvE. I still believe tank swapping might be viable against bosses and such with casters possibly spamming supports on immediate CD recovery.

From developer comments, I'm under the impression that you can't have dedicated healers because there simply is no way to produce enough healing to keep one "tank" up. There are self heals (which are significant) but the heals that affect others are not large enough to keep the trinity alive. So you can try to recreate the trinity as much as you want; the lack of heals prevents it from being even close to effective.

Yea, which isn't very hard to do. But there is also a little more depth to it then that. You can just jump back a few pages ITT to find the talk. Basically my POV is that the trinity is dead as we know it but that doesn't mean its existence is completely wiped out. Only time will prove that right or wrong since all the trinity elements still exist. And the focus is only on PvE cause PvP/WvW are nullified based on concepts.

Can someone reboot Jira? Having to go to page 7 to find the thread is entirely unacceptable.

Why are people freaking out so much about having to visit a city to respec? Makes no sense.

Is that all they are freaking out about now? GW2Guru was going nuts just over the fact that you had to pay to respec. And not just a little, they really acted like it was the end of the game.

Plus there is no real new stuff coming out to keep the thread going. Will probably just have another TB vid or two until the next beta, unless some new news drops.

just got an email from arenanet thanking people who signed up for beta....they also said "we know you're very eager for us to send out beta invitations, and we will be sending these confirmations out shortly." crossing my fingers for good news!!! :-D!!!

It's stupid as hell though. Not that it is worth reacting like they do...

I honestly can't say. From a non GW1 player it seems like the norm.

To have nothing to do to respec to me seems crazy. That's why I liked Retro's idea of having a set amount and going back to a city to re-up your amount of respecs. It was sort of a great idea for an inbetween of what they had and what they have now.

Hmmm, hope mine's on the way. Haven't gotten one of these yet.

Also, new very short video on their GW2 facebook page.

That's fine but if ANET keeps it as stated, it is bullshit.

Lol, I was gone for a couple days, but I'M BACK and does anyone have a link to that new video on youtube?

Is this on the Arenanet Facebook page or Guild Wars 2 page?

I'm on the GW2 Facebook page & I don't see any "new" video. >_<

How is wanting to keep the economy in check bullshit? You're well aware of what happened to GW1's economy when no money left it.
Ridiculous. Charging for something that inhibits build experimentation is nonsense. If ANET wants to create money sinks, do it elsewhere. I do see how this is defensible when there is no reason except to kiss face with the developer.

Really hope I get a Beta invite. Only MMO I have ever played is WoW and at the very minimum I am looking forward to trying something new....though some of the aspects of the game I have seen I am not horribly excited about.

In just over 48 hours, 1 million players signed up for a chance to participate in upcoming Guild Wars 2 beta events. Although we wish we could invite everyone who signed up to playtest the beta, we do have a limited number of slots available for each event and not everyone will be able to play. We know you're very eager for us to send out beta invitations, and we will be sending these confirmations out shortly.

I have always thought this argument was crazy. People who want to experiment will and those who wouldn't experiment wouldn't do it if it was free or not. You could give them gold to and they wouldn't. People are still going to experiment, this doesn't stop that at all, it just ads an inconveniance to do it. I do think this is a dumb way to impliment a money sink, but if this is how they think it would impact the economy the most oh well.

Oh there's no doubt they can move it elsewhere, though with this community they'd bitch if they moved it over to repairs or teleports or if they created a new sink so that's why it's going to stay exactly where it's at. I don't see the cost for respeccing to ever become an issue for my bank, between grey trash loot and loot/salvage you can put up on the Market, I just don't see the respec cost being an issue unless it scales to stupidly high amounts at 80.

Just for that e-mail..way to get me overexcited for nothing

Well, I'm glad it's a legit email. Didn't click on any of the links because it was sent through a third party (bluehornet).

Ok, got my email. Now I can say I hope these emails only went out to those who will actually get in the beta. :p

Also in that video is it a good sign that maybe Asura will be in this next beta? Why start a video concerning the beta with an Asura character?

And this is what game developers should NOT do.

We'll see. I don't want to get too carried away cause this is another topic we went over like 10x already...damn. But I don't want such a silly inconvenience. Make it something that "matters" is all I ask. Respec cost is just silly and they even removed it in GW1 for that very reason! Sell us a bunch of stuff that matters in-game. Charge us interest on loans, I don't care. But don't make me pay even 10 gold to change my friggin character.

And this is what game developers should NOT do.

When I say it's an inconvenience, it is seriously a very minor one, that has no real effect other than taking a small amount of gold out of the players pocket every time they want to do it.

I guess I am just used to it due to wow or other games, I just don't see how something so small is an issue. It's not like they are charging you to change your gear out. But like you said no need in retreading the issue all over again.

maybe the emails were sent to the people who arent getting in since they are clearly apologizing that not everyone will get in and giving us a new video to watch and not everyone has gotten an email lol...just another possibility :-p

The encounters, as in the boss fights and areas and mobs, aren't programmed with the trinity in mind so there really isn't a point to trying for a trinity in the game. Not really true, trinity is often seen as optimal grouping design in multiplayer RPG play, it's been that way since the earlier pen and paper rpgs even. It's not even a MMO only thing as it's been around a long time and even many single player games break down into group compositions being designed around the trinity.

Many players just naturally gravitate towards building up groups in their games to follow the trinity even when games don't focus on such a design as how overt it is in current MMOs. Some games work without it, but lot of players just naturally build towards that style and it's going to be hard even here for players to break out of the mentality. When forming groups, players are still going to try and create optimal builds for tanking, healing/support, and damage. Even if it's not optimal or the way the game is made, players are still going to be putting themselves into roles. In most pen and paper rpgs it was never required to have a trinity or such roles, but players would still form up their groups in such a way as they found it easier to have preset roles to focus their characters on and for gameplay tactics

It also makes for easy grouping "tactics" as everyone knows what they have to do instead of everyone trying to do everythin in real time. Playes just will assign each other tasks/roles to play in a combat encounter to make things move more smoothly

I'm done with this stupid fucking game and its developers. Five years for a cocktease. And the cocktease is "FACEBOOK LIKE FOR WATCHING SHITTY VIDEO PLZ".

Fuck these assholes. Might as well change the byline of this thread to "Gaming's Cartmanland".
