CBS Interactive (GameSpot parent company) buys Giant Bomb

Giant Bomb crew must feel some level of resentment to Screened, Tested.

Giant Bomb & Comic Vine had good numbers. Screened and Tested appeared to be financial anvils for the company.

This is the worst news ever. I've visited gamespot a few times over the years and did not like any of the staff members that's why I've primarily went to giantbomb over the past couple of years.

The only reason I didn't hate giantbomb teaming up with all those other sites was because Will, Norm, Rorie and a few others were all cool guys that fit pretty well in with the giantbomb guys.

Now that they're moving over to gamespot I feel like all of that chemistry is going to be gone and I honestly don't know if I will have any interest with keeping up with the giantbomb dudes if they are going to be working and making videos with any of the gamespot staff.

Sad, sad day.

I hope Giant Bomb and Tested maintain some autonomy. I don't like the split, and I have major concerns about CBS involvement in this.

Wow, this really fucking sucks. I have been an avid fan of GB for the last couple years now. Not like some of you on these boards, but they are the only gaming site i visit on a daily basis. I really hope this doesn't change a whole lot, but...fuck.

I do feel like such a sucker for financial supporting this thing though. I guess we all make bad investments at some point in our lives. The premium content never added up to much, just liked the guys and wanted to see them exist independently. Clearly there weren't enough people who did the same to keep the site financially viable. I'm assuming they'd be out of jobs if this didn't go through. I'm really struggling to come up with an example of a huge corporation gobbling up a smaller competitor and having the smaller thing come out well.

There's no reason to feel like a sucker. The GB guys did their best, tried something incredibly ambitious, and you helped support it. If you were financially stable enough to subscribe, and did, hats off to you, you did your part.

The stream crashed for me.

Is Brad joining Tested? Is that the big news they hinted about?

It's not literally the same people, but is the environment any different? It doesn't matter who the people are above them if ads are the most important thing.

What happens when Jeff torches a game that is being heavily advertised again?

I understand optimism, but I don't know how you can't at least be very skeptical about this.

Gamespot is a lot better these days, its a rather underrated site to be honest.

It is however really BORING and has no personalities.

I can almost handle Giant Bomb being owned by CBSi, but splitting up GB and Tested is just unacceptable. I haven't watched any media and am just going off what's in this topic, but this seems like the worst thing that could possibly happen. GB always thrived on being able to do their own thing and I don't expect that to continue here. I won't write it off as a possibility but they'll have to surprise me.

Man. No more executable. :(

They are still going to be separate site.

Same thing here. I did it since I really wanted to support them. Seeing them folded in a giant media company is kind of scary.

Will stay subscribed for now. Let's see how they deal with the directives from Gamespot and how they evolve.

Will they still be 100% separate? Like reviews, forums, wiki, all that?

Reviews - Yes
Wiki - Yes
Forum - Unknown

As for my subscription, I'm going to let it continue for now, but when October comes around and I have the choice of resubbing I'm going to be thinking hard about how things are going.

I just want to see stuff like Jar Time, Random PC Game, Breaking Brad, etc. continuing.

Brad is leaving GB. Tested guys are working with Mythbusters. Drew & Vinny are joining the circus. GB is now owned by Gamespot, Alex Navarro is chief editor and Leigh Alexander is the new bombcast host.

It's the only site I visit, too. I listen to Radio Free Nintendo, but never visit the site. Really hope things turn out okay, because this is really the only site I visit.

They're letting on like they'll be separate, but at the end of the day, as they're not the owners of the site and are being handed paychecks by someone else, that someone else will be making the rules - and they'll abide by them.

A year tops of unique, old GiantBomb content until it's just folded into CBS and GameSpot's terrible site and editorials.

There's a reason I haven't visited GameStop since 2007 - and it doesn't all revolve around Gerstmann's firing, it's also other things.

I won't be going back now.

How much of this is true?

Because we wanted to support an independent venture that we thought was doing things the right way? Now it's owned by a media conglomerate.

This. I subscribed because I believed in Giant Bomb and Tested and wanted to support what those guys were up to.

This just makes me so... sad.

I would have thought Tested would have higher numbers than CV. Basing that solely on how I liked their content.

Is the CV lady coming too? I didn't hear her mentioned.

Well, he wasn't able to talk about it for legal reasons, but everyone put 2 and 2 together and went, "yeah, that's probably why".

This comic still does it for me. Everytime. I think I pee'd abit.

Something like this was inevitable, so I'm not especially surprised at the announcement. I have enough faith in the GB dudes to give them the benefit of the doubt. The Q&A was reassuring enough, I guess. Happy that Drew and Dave are coming along.

Also, I'm looking forward to Tested's future.

forums are so dead, imo

This is what I fear. I couldn't have less interest in anybody at Gamespot, so all the inevitable cameos will be a bit of a bummer (but maybe that's just me).

All the doom and gloom in this thread is more than a little absurd. This deal allows Giant Bomb to continue to produce the content you love. They were never going to survive on subs alone. Acting like Gamespot is the devil just shows you haven't been to Gamespot lately.

I think CV is popular because so far its like the only good comic website I have seen, even if they make some really stupid articles every now and then.

sucks to be sure... but you would be lying if you said that you wouldnt take $$$ and bail in the same shoes. especially in this economy

Since this is basically a total Whiskey Media breakup, who gets to keep the site layouts? One of the best things about Giant Bomb was the lack of any pathetically transparent attempt to double page views by breaking up medium length reviews into several pages.

I also hope this doesn't mean ditching having videos on youtube for some CBS branded embedded player. On the plus side, I doubt CBS will ever try to hold the podcast hostage to get premium memberships.

Whiskey always seemed like it was set up to sell its brands and databases rather than operate for a long period of time. Good luck to the crew.

GB and CV were solid. Tested / Screened were kind of disasters, as far as I can tell.

How the hell is tested that low. They're barely above AV. What on earth. So yeah I guess anything would be better for them. Hopefully more exposure because those guys deserve it.

It was pretty fucking stupid to fire him for that in the first place, but they did.

I'm not saying they're going to do it tomorrow, but if the site still isn't profitable in 18 months, what happens then?

Are you clueless?

No, I'm just curious, everyone's reasons are gong to be different, I'd like to see the FAQ they have put together before I decide but yeah, this changes things.

I wish the OP would be updated with what is actually going on with all the members of the staff. There seems to be a lot of confusion/questions.
