CBS Interactive (GameSpot parent company) buys Giant Bomb

WHOA, how the hell did Tested manage to team up with MythBusters? God, I need to listen to this weeks TioAT.

Waking up to this news makes me want to go back to sleep and wish it was all a dream nightmare.

I'll miss their awesome freedom, especially the late night dev chats in that house during E3.

I wish the guys at GB had enough money to just do their own thing without any oversight.

But I imagine buying a website so tied up in the revenue of others is tough.

Whitta rolls in high circles ;)

I actually have no idea, but whether or not this was made possible because of Garry's connections, it's awesome.

Tested is now owned by the same company that works with Mythbusters. It is a good business thing. Hopefully, there is chemistry between them. To me, it looks likes Adam/Jamie would be more random (one time a month) guests than anything else. Hopefully there is more too it.

we already know the reason why Jeff was fired.

It's not politically acceptable for it to have been Gamespot's fault for firing Jeff and then bring him back, so Jeff is going to have to take some blame in public fashion in order for Gamespot to save face.

Gamespot has a stream going with John Davison talking about all this.

A lot of what he's saying sounds good. Guess we'll see. Says GB and GS are remaining completely separate.

So nobody is leaving?

Whiskey Media was broken up Gordon Gecko style.

Giant Bomb / Comic Vine rolled into Gamespot.

Screened is gone.

Tested was bought by company that owns Mythbusters, so the site will go on as an extension of the show in some form.

What exactly was Whiskey Media? Was it owned by a separate bigger company? Just wondering how this all broke down and why every site under the brand is getting bought out.

You get get out of here with this "optimism". This thread is reserved only for knee-jerk unbridled RAAAGGEE.

They kept making a point of how Gamespot has completely new management. I think they're most definitely going to throw the old guard under the bus for that embarrassment in games journalism.

Discovery Communications is the "Distributor" according to Wikipedia. So Tested owned by Discovery Communications now? What?!

The Pancake stream was very reassuring.

Giantbomb is supposedly still operating independently... at least in the sense that they'll have their own staff, still keep their own site and, most importantly, retain complete creative control of the content on their site.

They're still doing weekly Bombcasts
They're still doing Quick Looks
Jeff said Reviews are staying for the time being
Jeff, Ryan, Brad, Vinny, Patrick, Dave, and Drew are all still on staff at least
Patrick is still doing news separately from GameSpot

They're moving into a new office next to Gamespot.
They'll have access to Gamespot's superior advertising team
They'll have access to Gamespot's recording equipment/green screen room
They'll might start pulling in Gamepspot people into videos and stuff (think Whiskey Media Happy Hour but with Gamespot in place of Tested/Screened)

All-in-all I'm excited. The saddest news here to me is that Screened (my other favorite WM site) is now completely separate from Giantbomb and there'll be no more Whiskey Media Happy Hours or Ryan guesting on the Screencast.

I am really curious to see what happens with anime vice now, I mean who ever bought it has to staff it now right? It can't just continue to be a community driven zombie?

Stuff like TNT wont have Will showing up. Stuff like Tested's podcasts wont have Brad guest. Mailbags wont have other coll people wandering about. Basically, on of the cooler little things about the site(s) is now dead.

Exactly. Them all being in the same office was part of what made Whiskey Media great. So many crossovers and cool cameos. Now they'll all be split up with less freedom. Sigh.

Should have just had a kickstarter to put the ownership of the site to the game community as a whole.

I'm honestly extremely worried, and I hope my fears are put to rest. This is exactly the kind of business behavior I despise.

They're moving into a new office next to Gamestop.
They'll have access to Gamestop's superior advertising team
They'll have access to Gamestop's recording equipment/green screen room

I'm sorry. Everytime you typed in Gamespot, you spelt Gamestop.

Not sure which would be worse.

This is what I see happening. They will say it was whoever worked here before (we won't give names yadda yadda) but it's totes different now.

Discovery Communications is the "Distributor" according to Wikipedia. So Tested owned by Discovery Communications now? What?!

As far as I can tell looking at the site, they just work with them. No ownership of anything from that site.

That's how this kind of thing always starts...

Everyone excited about the possibilities of working together yet still remaining independent. It rarely lasts.

They did have a "Kickstarter"... memberships.

Well, I at least typed Gamespot right once, haha. Fixed, thanks.

I'm not a fan of Gamespot at all but I'm not thinking they're going to barge in on Giantbomb's parade. If anything Giantbomb should benefit from Gamespot's resources.
