NFL Off-Season Thread: "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"

I just fell out of my chair, but I could have sworn I read captive downplaying the loss of Mario. That can't be right. Not after all this time

They're the best thing ever while on your team, then when the leave it's always "Eh, we have this scrub nobody has ever heard of. He'll do the same thing for a fraction of the cost. He wasn't that good anyway, besides he got injured that one time and no one person makes the team. We'll be fine."

That's for every player, ever, and every team, ever. It's the circle of fandom.

And we're home. The boy's in some pain but has some power pills that will help with that. Definitely out of the nervous because he's in surgery stage and settling into recovery stage.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and comments. NFL-GAF continues to shine (in an insular fashion, of course).

Can they offer something like that? Isn't that like 'Hey I've only got 10 million, here take a car and a house and other stuff' with the cap and all that.

Why can't a company promise an employee a future?

Hmmm, i guess it could be a problem if they agreed to take care of his bank account once he became coach and thus Manning accepts a smaller salary as a player.

Can you blame him? The Texans make the playoffs for the first time ever, and then follow it up with a horrible off-season so far. People were talking about them as pre-season favorites to come out of the AFC, no one is saying that now.

Well this is the NFL not some regular fortune 500 team. I can only assume things were outlawed in the CBA. And if not, how far are teams allowed to use future jobs as chips for attempting to get players will be interesting.

But that promise can be done under the table regardless. The rule would have to ban players from working (coaching / management positions of course) for teams they have already played for. Something is telling me that rule doesn't exist, maybe I'm wrong.

what? How did i downplay the loss of mario? I said i was disappointed, but the Texans cant afford that shit. Not to mention he only played 5 games last season and they didnt seem to miss him. Sure, in a no cap world i would love to keep him.

But im more concerned with losing Meyers and Briesel.

Also who gives a shit about off season champs? It doesn't take a genius to see that the Texans werent going to be players in the free agent market this year, they have too much cap money tied up.

PFT says:

Per a source with knowledge of the league’s procedures, Manning and the Titans would be required to sign two contracts: one for the work as player, and one for the job as a non-player. The second job would have to be a “real job,” and the wages for the second job would have to represent fair market value. Manning would have to actually perform the duties of the job after his playing career ends.

Also, the entire arrangement would require league approval.

There would be no cap charge during Manning’s playing career. However, if the second contract pays higher than fair market value or if Manning doesn’t perform the services required, the Titans would face salary cap charges and other penalties for circumventing the cap, including fines and possible loss of draft choices.

Teams restructure all the time. The Steelers were way over the cap and now are under it. I under stand the Texans not getting into a bidding war for Mario, the D was great without him. I am just surprised they havent made any other moves besides losing players. They were so close to the SB last year, I thought that this would be their big push for it year.

That Florio story tells me everything I need to know about Florio's grasp on the NFL, football in general and the history of the game.

Reggie White was important not because he was good, he was important because he was an Alpha dog. He could bring people with him, make people believe and most importantly, dispel the ridiculous notion that black people weren't welcome in Green Bay. Perceived racism was a massive, massive issue for the Packers before White, and he ended that.

how ridiculous can it be when he received death threats while on the team?

Is Manning really going to end up a Titan guys? That's the last place I expected him to go of the 4-5 teams that were reportedly talking to him.

Also, how come we haven't signed Smith yet? Are we going to roll with CK as our starting QB this year?

It was transofrmative on so many levels. The Williams signing is just a good player going to a crappy team.

Reggie was also a douchebag racist

calling it now in advance when manning-ate it the talk of nfl-age 2016~

Bud Adams would sell his soul to sign Manning so it's a really strong possibility he would sign with the Titans.

they have made moves, they locked up foster. They offered Meyers money, apparently not enough though. They did cut Winston, which I didn't understand. AJ80 restructed his contract, I believe a couple other players restructed, but i'd have to look.

They need to cut Jacoby, thats 3 million they can get back right there.

Yup, hes gonna be a Titan. He loves Tennessee and Adams would give him a blow job if he signed. Who does not like money and blow jobs?

That seems to make sure he does the duties of the other task which Peyton would definitely fulfill. This rule seems designed to stop franchises from offering BS positions to players just so they can continue to get a check, it doesn't prevent guys capable of coaching (Manning) from signing a future coaching contract. This is what I would expect to be in place and it seems exploitable. Then again Tennessee isn't New England so the NFL approving it isn't a given I suppose.

I just find it Bizarre, because the Titans with Manning still don't strike me as a super bowl caliber team. I mean, yea, they are a lot closer to contending with him, but their defense is still mediocre and they only have Britt as a weapon.

Eww, a BJ from an 89 year old man would make him run away to Denver!

Well Adam is desperate to win now since he's really old so it's not that weird.

I actually saw Reggie speak one time at the Pontiac Silverdome back during high school. He seemed like a good guy.

Fucking Fisher and Shanahan. According to Holmgren the Browns offer was the same as the Skins but St. Louis went with Washington because of front office relationship. He actually sounded kind of pissed about it.

I don't understand why you'd do that when the Browns have a better pick, 2 spots up, from the redskins.

Mario Manningham is at 49ers HQ.

Moss
Crabtree
Manningham
Draft Pick
Bogan
Kyle Williams

Solid WR group. Just keep them off of Special Teams.

GM Gene Smith said the potential interest in Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill could lead to a possible trade at No. 7

https://twitter.com/#!/JohnOehser/status/180379706145771520

lol Gene Smith still doesn't know anything about drafting QBs. He's not going to be there at 7 for him to trade the pick. Peter King brought up Tannehill to the Browns at #4, though they are downplaying that.

Holmgren was salty about the RG3. Said his offer was just as good and thinks fix was in between Shanny and buddy Fisher. STL version is that CLE didn't add the 3rd #1 until it was already done w/ WAS

That has to be false, it is impossible that the teams could make the same offer, so 1 offer has to be better. No way do I believe the Rams would take the worse offer just to do a buddy a solid.

Sucks for the Browns, looks like they have to settle for Tannehill since Flynn is not gonna sign with them.

This. Also, not that either team is headed to the playoffs in the next season or two, but at some point you *might* make the post-season and you *might* have to beat that QB you got all those picks for. Why wouldn't you trade out of conference first?

And don't say Super Bowl. You realize that would be a Rams/Browns SB we'd be talking about.

There aren't enough :jnc's

Curious to see if he does make his way back to the Giants. For now, the Rams it is..

Eric Edholm ‏ @Eric_Edholm

Uh, yeah, folks just to be clear, former #Eagles, #Giants WR Steve Smith visiting #Rams, not the #Panthers WR.

They didn't even win a NC with Manning! It was Tee Martin.

What can you say? He was the beginning of a great run, and the best player of the many MANY NFL players we created in 1995-2004 span. He also was robbed of the Heisman in 1997. Like I said earlier, the guy is a legend here.

Obviously each side has its own version, but the story from STL is that the GM, Snead, didn't do the usual play teams off each other.

He had an idea of which teams would inquire, and when they called, he told them, specifically, what it would take. Intially, everyone balked. WAS didn't want to give up its 2nd this year, and CLE didn't want to give up its second #1

So the Thursday the deal got done, he called both teams and said he would take one final offer from each team. CLE didn't offer that second #1, while WAS included its #2. So the Rams did the deal with WAS. CLE called later and included the second #1, but the deal was already done w/ WAS.

Either way, CLE better land a stud and hope RG3 flops. b/c that pick is what cost CLE RG3

It's Holmgren and the Browns, the same people who wanted us to believe that nobody on the Browns sideline saw McCoy get knocked into oblivion.

I'd like to hear LJ's take on this.

Enjoy your new head coach! Like Flynn, he is a Tom Clements creation.

I've watched Flynn play in two games, Pats/Lions, he destroyed both, especially the Lions. Fitz has carved some good defenses, and some bad ones. I can't make a call based on two games.

Fitz needs to hit the fade, that's his issue, doesn't hit it consistently. I also don't think he's a game managers, Fitz will take risk, he's going to sink/swim by throwing.

Stop gap, not a long term solution, his contract isn't that prohibitive. Roll the dice again, see what happens. Get a QB via the draft.

btw, notice how defensive Holmgren and Heckert were at the PC? They feel the heat. Have to get a QB of the future in this draft. Becoming a distant 4th in that division
