Mass Effect 3 SPOILER THREAD: LOTS OF SPECULATION FROM EVERYONE

I like basically ever bit of writing in ME3 with the exception of the intro (which I got over) and the ghost child ending. I loved the story arcs for all the characters. I loved the individual dialogue. I loved the set pieces. I loved the themes. I loved how it wrapped most things up but also left room to speculate about the future. They wrapped up so many character arts in convincing, enjoyable ways. The final set pieces on Earth, where you talk to all your crew for the last time, was incredible and showed how invested I was.

Then suddenly, a wild Walters appeared.

This. Basically makes the ending that much more painful.

The thing about ME3's writing is, I realized in the last few hours that characters that have stuck with me through every game (Garrus, Tali, Joker, Chakwas) were actually important to me. Ashley choosing not to come with me in ME2 made me dislike her more than I otherwise would. Liara not joining me in ME2 made it so I prioritized my friendships with Garrus and Tali over her, though the removing that rumored intro from ME2 where it showed Liara taking your body back probably didn't help that.

But I think...Bioware didn't understand that it had achieved something major by making me care about these characters. I almost never do that. The fact that I was dreading the ending as it approached because I was scared to lose Garrus or Tali is completely unprecedented! But the ending was not about the people I've united or the squad that stuck by me or the sacrifice everyone knew they would have to make for the good of all life.

It was about a magical space child. Bioware didn't get it.

I think everyone's missing this as well.

They're basically admitting that they cut the Prothean from the main game to put as DLC due to time constraints, aren't they?

I kinda saw the overall "we didn't expect it would be so poorly received", but this.....this is just shittastic decision making by Bioware.

This is basically what happened with a lot of the MK DLC and I suspect with a lot of other DLC. I don't really mind that if you ran out of time and had what you thought was a great idea you sell it later. The Omega DLC that will come eventually I'm sure is the same thing.

See, this isn't something I have so much of a problem with, sometimes with DLC it really comes down to either developing it later and selling it or scraping it entirely, we saw this with AC2 and some missing memories that were sold as DLC later, and quite frankly I can see why as they were a bit iffy and it was probably easier to scrap a short section of story that didn't affect the whole to make sure the game was finished.

Now as for ME3, I wouldn't have considered it that bad, but they spent months and months integrating Kinect that I can only assume the core ME fanbase don't care about and putting useless people like Diane Allers in the game instead of developing a small section for a Prothean squad mate.
And then instead of offering him later like ME2 DLC they sell it off, that is some crap right there.

Wrong. Your friends are all magic space robots stuck on Eden.

Wait no that's horrible!

Still holding out for a press release with "WHEELS!" in it.

Or at least an eventual topic title change.

Thanks for pointing this out. I, and so many others, would have gladly waited for a better game.

Not sure if funny or worth reading, sort of funny I guess.
What the fuck? That was most certainly worth reading.

LOL Oh man this made me laugh.

I'm getting more and more bitter about this ending as it settles in. I'm just really unhappy with it. I can handle dark endings, but this just felt very forced down our throats with all the roads leading to Sucktown.

Part of the problem is most people don't realize the dirty secret that big fans are generally more invested in a work than the author is.

Odds are that a huge fan of Mass Effect could probably easily stump Mac Walters on ME trivia.

Why wouldn't it be? Look Back a page or two for the source.

Welp that thread moves fast.

Doesn't Walters dislike the aliens in ME?That would explain why he felt like shoehorning that damn kid everywhere.

The dream sequence would be so much better if the dead squadmates would appear in them (besides disembodied voices of them)

They turned off BSN

They should have just went the KOTOR route and have two distinct endings. Maybe even a few more just for kicks. Very few gaming series can pull off the ewok/fireworks type ending from return of the jedi. As the ultimate paragon ending, as cliche as it would have been, it would have bee incredibly satisfying seeing everyone celebrate/being happy..

I don't want to fall into the trap of thinking I am entitled to a better ending; it is their story and they can do with it as they wish. With a trilogy or any series of fiction, bad endings are just an inherent, unavoidable risk. But personally, if BioWare is going to pull something like this for the sake of speculation alone, why even get anywhere near as invested in any other game with similar writers? Why even give them the benefit of the doubt? At the moment, my thought is "If they are going to sweep the rug from under the players' feet with this much glee, I'll just spare myself the headache in the future entirely by not playing their games."
This is where I think you're wrong. Yes, it's their game, and yes, they can decide how the story is laid out, but the ending should be mine choice, not theirs, and the key word here is choice. We weren't given a choice based on the 100+ hours we've invested in this game, we were given a choice that took absolutely nothing from all the time we poured into this game, that's where they went wrong.

And you know what? I bought all three games, I bought the books, I gave spent over $200 on this franchise and and I was one of those people who made Bioware into the success they are now. We deserve at least some sort of acknowledgement for that. I don't understand the entitlement argument. This isn't Halo, this isn't a game where the ending was locked in by the developers and only the developers. This is a game where the ending was supposed to be up to the players. This is something the developer repeatedly told us was fact, and then they turn around and do the complete opposite. For that, people are understandably feeling ripped off. The ending was so bad that it effectively soured what was 99% an amazing video game. That last few minutes shat on not only us, but the work of everyone who actually put their heart and soul into working on this game.

It's bad because it really IS that bad.

Lol..

Agree 100%

Oh dear, stopping people from posting on the Bioware forums for the moment, world has gone crazy.

At this point I'm not sure if Bioware should be proud of themselves or not for creating such emotion and drama from fans over a game ending, whether it is good or not is a different point, but such outrage, they've achieved something at least.

The guy contradicts the main theme of Mass Effect in interviews. He goes as far as saying that players would emphasize more with a human child than an asari one, when one of the main themes in the games have been the tolerance of and empathy towards other species.

Lots of speculation from everyone

Say, Bioware decides to announce a new Ending DLC for Free at PAX.

Is all forgiven?

I think it's a shame that all this Mac Walters nonsense is sweeping up the attention of what otherwise is a truly great game.

Oh well.

I wonder what happened to Miranda. She told my Shepard to come find her after all of the fighting was over. Looks like that is definitely not happening.

So how long until they cancel their PAX talk?

ROFL @ the fact they had to shut the forum down. You really couldn't make this up. Hopefully this will be the "child catalyst" that is needed for Mass Effect fans to get a decent ending rather than all this "speculation" bull.
