Family of Florida boy killed by Neighborhood Watch seeks arrest

It goes on:

The case caused a sensation because Collison wasn't arrested that night. Instead, Sanford officers sat him in the back of a patrol car, watched the video, then allowed him to go home.

Collison is the son of Sanford police Lt. Chris Collison. He was not at the scene that night, but his son phoned him, and Lt. Collison then called Sgt. Anthony Raimondo, who was there.

Patrol officers had decided to arrest Collison, but Raimondo said no.

It isn't entirely clear, but it seems like officers there wanted to arrest him but their boss said no. Their boss also had spoken to the man's father. That certainly looks inappropriate but, even if it happened as it appears from the outside, the Zimmerman case represents a significant jump in misconduct if it's true there has been a coverup. This latest incident would require more people being complicit in the "sweeping under the rug" of a much more serious crime.

I think the fact that in the earlier case the release of the video and public pressure lead to the proper decision being made suggests that even if these officials are attempting to make this go away the facts will ultimately drive the consequences.

It's not that racism only exists in the South. It's that it is only institutionalized to this degree in the South.

A minor quibble, but our legion of blue state ghettos, job and drug war statistics severely belie that notion. In a sense, what the North is explicitly good at is segregating institutionalized racism from the "good society". Optics. In comparison racism in the South is (perversely) more casual and honest.

By honest you mean more open and blatant?

All over the news this whole week in Daytona Beach. Really puts a damper on the festivities here.. well I hope what should happen happens. There's a group here ( maybe joking, maybe ) established a "Find Zimmerman" group. lol. He's probably hiding in a crab hole in Cocoa Beach !

Oh your poor festivities....

Reading back, it appears that she had mentioned he liked chicken and the reporter was prompting her in a moment where she was at a loss for words. It really is hard to believe that someone would make a joke. Seems like just an unfortunate comment that came out very very wrong.

damn, guess we have to go back to being angry over a blatant murder now.

Or taken out of context for views.

There is even more to that tangent of Justin Collison. He apparently shot someone and walked scot free. Also: when he was 17, he beat and choked his girlfriend, and vandalized her house. That was dropped too.

So all in all, Justin Collison:

- had a severe domestic violence case dropped at 17
- shot and seriously injured someone the next year
- was caught on video getting in 3 fights (including the suckerpunching of the homeless man)

and his only punishment has been paying one victim's hospital bills, donations to charities, and probation. Jesus Christ. From this article:

horrible... hopefully media pressure comes down to that shithole.

Like many, many, many others I keep coming to this thread to see justice served on a silver platter but nothing is getting done here. Those 911 calls should be our trump card, they're pretty damning evidence, any way you slice it and it should put the pressure on Zimmerman and his band of cohorts.

Yes that's my sense of it. I never lived in the south, but as a lifelong North Easterner I'd argue our racism is thoroughly institutionalized, if not culturally accepted. "Tucked away", balkanized, but systemic nonetheless. NE ghettos are replete with victims just like Trayvon. The "contrast" of the neighborhood is what brings this attention.

The lady who called the police and kept saying Ooo my god is perhaps the most annoying person I have ever listened speak.

The operator wanted to hang up on her so badly but the lady just would not shut up.

I honestly do not think NE ghettos are replete with victims like Trayvon. Victims of racism, yes. But Trayvon is first and foremost a victim specifically of white vigilante justice, a phenomenon that is unusually strong in the South, not just now, but throughout its sordid history (lynchings). The political base of the vigilante self-defense movement is strongest in the South. This movement is predicated on the asserted right of "law-abiding" citizens (whites) to defend themselves against "criminals" (blacks), and recently scored huge victories with legal decisions in the Supreme Court recognizing self-defense against citizens as a "constitutional right." Florida's recently revamped self-defense law is another example of this movement's success, the very law that now helps shield Zimmerman from prosecution for killing a suspicious black person, as it was intended to do.

Until you have lived in the South, you'll just have to take my word for it that it's different here, and it's a difference that goes well beyond its mere overtness.

Just reading this sad thread. I wandered to one of News sites and read the comments section... WOW, I try to convince myself that they are just trolls. but the scary true is that there are people who do believe this shit:

- "He was advised not to pursue for his safety, not the perps. The family is looking for a big check."

- "With as much violence perped by young black males, that we all are aware of, this was a justified shooting. How was Zimmerman to know whether the black male was armed until it is too late. I would have made the same decision."

- "There's certainly more to this story than anyone knows. Why was trayvon creeping around the clubhouse on a rainy night & staring at houses. This isn't normal "just went for skittles" behavior. And this Zimmerman guy sounds like he was tired of a----- getting away. . .seems like he was ready to make his mark on somebody.

Either way, RIP kid. And hope George makes it through this. . .let's all remember, his intentions were for keeping his community safe. Not exactly a menace to society."

- "Trayvon's family will be millionaire's by the time this circus is done, they've got Al Sharpton and all kinds of other scum crawling out of the gutter to their aid, they will be just fine."

- "Young black men his age always seem to be a target and It's sad because we do have young black men in America who do want to do good and succeed. I think Zimmerman had an ecounter with someone black before and took his anger out on the this kid because of what happened in his past. This should be a lesson to all young black men in America.

1) Stop sagging your pants

2) Stop dropping out of school

3) Stop being deadbeat dads

Otherwise you are going to continued being racially profiled. And trust me I'm not saying what he did was right, but If you want respect you have to start respecting yourself.
"

I mean, wtf...

The tape of Zimmerman's own call is DAMNING. I mean, he flat out said "he's running", then you hear him get out of his SUV to try and chase him.

How can you claim self-defense after that? Trayvon ran because he was being followed by a stranger in an SUV! Of course he's going to fight when this person catches up to him. What the fuck?

This is rage educing.

Unless Zimmerman himself was a policeman, this self-defense bullcrap makes no fucking sense. Since when do you have to surrender yourself to random strangers?

That is what was so infuriating about KHarvey's arguments. This wasn't a cop, Zimmerman followed and confronted the kid. Zimmerman is not some authority, he does not have a uniform, does not drive a police vehicle, does not have a badge. Trayvon had every right to defend himself from some random guy who was stalking him at night. The only person who could have possibly performed self defense in this scenario was Trayvon, not Zimmerman.

Well said. Has any news outlet confirmed if Zimmerman is still in the country because if I were him, I would be in a non extradition country right about now.

Of that I have no doubt. Just to be clear I was speaking in terms of institutions and outcomes (dead kids), and the perception that this was strictly a southern problem. Obviously the regional contexts and relationships to those outcomes are remarkably complex, culturally informed and unique on their own, I couldn't mitigate that even if I wanted to. Like I said it was a minor quibble on my part, sorry for the derail.

How on earth does that make any lick of sense? If you kill an innocent and unarmed kid you're a fucking menace to society, regardless of whatever-the-fuck your intentions were.

Ugh, the fact that these idiots have the right to vote...

Every time I see this topic bumped again or something on reddit, I check to see if this guy's been arrested or charged yet! Shit is absolutely crazy.

I'm not from the US but I would urge all Florida residents to write to their local politicians to see that ridiculous self-defence law repealed.

Just saw this posted on Facebook: What Everyone Should Know About Trayvon Martin (1995-2012).

Really puts things in perspective. The fact that Zimmerman hasn't been arrested yet just punctuates the racism behind this tragedy.

Might as well post some of the things that were new to me:

1. Zimmerman called the police to report Martin’s “suspicious” behavior, which he described as “just walking around looking about.” Zimmerman was in his car when he saw Martin walking on the street. He called the police and said: “There’s a real suspicious guy. This guy looks like he’s up to no good, on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around looking about… These a**holes always get away”

5. Martin weighed 140 pounds. Zimmerman weighs 250 pounds. [Orlando Sentinel; WDBO]

6. Martin’s English teacher described him as “as an A and B student who majored in cheerfulness.” [Orlando Sentinel]

9. Zimmerman called the police 46 times since Jan. 1, 2011. [Miami Herald]

10. According to neighbors, Zimmerman was “fixated on crime and focused on young, black males.” [Miami Herald]

14. The officer in charge of the crime scene also received criticism in 2010 when he initially failed to arrest a lieutenant’s son who was videotaped attacking a homeless black man. [New York Times]

15. The police did not test Zimmerman for drugs or alcohol. A law enforcement expert told ABC that Zimmerman sounds intoxicated on the 911 tapes. Drug and alcohol testing is “standard procedure in most homicide investigations.” [ABC News]

the guys pic looked different in a news report here then his facebook pic that was posted in this thread , weird.

glad this story is getting more attention, smh such an awful story

I am starting to think that even if this went in front of a judge, the jury still wouldn't convict because of the 21st century interpretation of reasonable doubt.

Its all roughly boiling down to a few things, at this point, and the PD's history. The kid was too busy being black. And in this country, in certain places, its perfectly fine for anyone to take the law into their own hand, and shoot a black. You can enjoy the time spent at home with your living loved ones, while your police department bends over backwards to clear your name.

I mean shit 2012. I'm glad I live in Los Angeles, but the fucking sad fact is that I know I have to avoid certain parts of the city because I'm black. I'm a 29 year old tax paying Visual Effects Artist, with a bumper sticker that says "Ancient Alien On Board" on my 1999 Honda Civic. Driving through Culver City will get me pulled over, and questioned about the ownership of said vehicle, or anything else under the sun.

Its just wrong that another generation has to go through this nonsense. I'm just glad that it is getting slightly better than the previous generation. My dad couldn't drive anywhere really... now its down to just 3 or 4 places. :-|
