He's obviously pretty slow, and I think that statement was more a reflection of that than of malice.
No you see, they have wild racoons in the area! So he wasn't using the racial epithet.....Also his father vouched for him, he has black mentees, friends and family and everything. He speaks Spanish!
I really hate it when people use the term "race card" like this, like it's a fucking trap card that minorities like to use.

I personally find it more insulting that he blames the victims family of handling things wrong, when his departments handling of the case was/is pretty pathetic and how they let the man that killed their young boy for no reason other than prejudiced suspicions go free while the case is still being dealt with, strikes as extremely insensitive, callous, assholish(for lack of a better word), arrogant... the police chief is not a very stand up guy IMO.
I think it's clear my comment did not come out the right way(I am black by the way) my whole point is that I don't want a murder investigation play the back seat to decide if Zimmerman is racist or not.

The murder occurred on Feb 26th. The OP's news story was March 7th. This killing and botch investigation is brought to light only because the Martin family vehemently pursued justice. I commend the family for their courage. If not for them, this would have just been another black teen shot story swept under the rug.
I live in the part of the city which is much more diverse and the violence is under reported in the newspaper. When there's a death in the white neighborhood, front page news and follow up story.

I believe he's half white. Father is white while mom is hispanic.
That's why it's best to always take a step back to make sure your own biases aren't clouding your opinion on a matter, and that includes everything said by the media.

Well, some hispanics consider themselves "white" in the sense that they can trace lineage to continental europe.

I'm not defending the guy in the slightest or trying to deflect any of his obvious mental deficiencies. I'm saying if we (general societal we) want to get justice enacted, it's only reasonable and rational to do it with provable facts.
I want this story to have a just and fair ending as much as everyone else here.

You're right, but in this instance nothing really changed, as the dude is still pretty much considered racist and his actions racially motivated.

If he is half-white, then he's still white, so it's not inaccurate to refer to him as white.
This doesn't really matter though, his actions and motivations were clearly race-based and it's less about his own race and more about Trayvon's.

That could very well be it that they're painting him as non-white to downplay the racism. Which is wrong and scummy of them (especially as they're playing the "I have black friends!" card) and likely what they're aiming for.
Is it possible to see how us doing the same thing for our "case", painting him as white to up the racism, could possibly be seen as a little bit unethical? Again, just to reiterate so people don't deliberately misunderstand: I think the guy's a racist scumbag and deserves punishment--we don't NEED to up-play because it's already speaking for itself with every new news report.
We should be BETTER than fox news style "Racist white kills black kid" headlining, as "Half-hispanic racist kills black kid" isn't as sensational.
The guy's a sick racist murderer regardless of whatever nationality he is, so his race shouldn't be NEEDED to prove he's scum. And that's something we can all agree on.

the new race wars are between hispanics and blacks. this makes more sense now. and it's Sanford!! I've been there. It is predominantly black and hispanic. This makes perfect sense! He can say he's white all he wants. He's hispanic. People and their biases already assuming this is some white redneck. tsk tsk

Any truth to this? I've seen this sentiment a few times but never with any real 'meat' to back it up. This story definitely stuck in my mind, but I feel like there's not really a clear picture on whether this is happening or whether its a few isolated incidents incorrectly being extrapolated to some brooding 'war'.

A race war between blacks and hispanics benefits only whites. I wonder if it's being encouraged to keep both minorities down.
In modern US politics, getting the white + black or white + hispanic vote is enough to win an election, you don't need both. That means a lot of pandering to one side or another at the municipal politics level that might be brooding resentment.

With gangs definitely.
In regular life its more subtle but it exist. Alot of the cheap labor jobs (maids, janitors....) used to go black workers now go to Hispanics because they usually will work cheaper.
The real shame is that they are both largely relegated to cheap labor jobs.
