when a big ship has to go through?

i'll get my coat.

To the original question, it's hard to say. Normally, you give a set ~2 years, but Tower Bridge may stick around a little longer given the magnitude of the set. I think the new Death Star has overstayed it's typical shelf life as well. It's hard to say with Lego - while some things would appear to be "trend", anything's possible.

Excited! The Xwing will be here today and my Grand Emporium will be here tomorrow. Looks like I have a awesome weekend ahead of me.

is there usually one big flagship creator style set like that? So will we get sight of something new before Tower Bridge gets close to being oop?

From what I've seen, yeah. I mean, I wasn't a huge Lego fanatic until more recently (post-Taj Mahal), but just like the Modulars, a big announcement seems to come right around the time they are planning to discontinue a set.

Look at the Town Hall for example. The announcement and release is sort of the nail in the coffin for Fire Brigade. Hell, it's not even pictured on in the lineup of buildings anymore. :) Little hints like that help, too. It was such a fucking tease to open the Tower Bridge instruction manual to see a picture of the Beetle and the Taj Mahal staring at me. But that's just the way the prints run I guess!

ok, that will do me I shall hold my horses for a while yet.

So the Lego Kids Convention is in Cincinnati this weekend and my boyfriend feels weird going since we don't have any kids. How can I convince him we won't look like pedo creepers? Or will we?!

So I bought the Imperial Shuttle last night, and my god that thing is huge. I was not expecting the top wing to be that tall.

So far only working on finishing detail on the top wing's attachment to the base, but looks really cool so far. Really excited to see how the side wings work.

Assuming there will be a lot of AFOL creations and involvement, you definitely won't look like creepers. :)

you could always stuff a pillow under your shirt and pretend to be pregnant ;)
or dont you have any nieces or nephews you could "borrow" for a day?

I was in Florida on business yesterday and stopped by Downtown Disney to pick up some souvenirs for the kids. I didn't realize there was a Lego store there. I'm sure lots of you have already seen this but it impressed me!

Holy crap that's great! Is that a scene from Sleeping Beauty?

Yeah-it looks like Maleficent attacking a Lego-ized Prince Charming.

A couple more from around the store:

This sea serpent looked pretty good for being in the lake. Didn't get any shots of the tail.

This one actually looked pretty bad up close. Random kids aren't mine.

I've said this before, but I really hope we see a UCS lightsaber at some point. It should be full scale, with working sound and light. Wouldn't that be amazing?

Finished the Mini Modulars. Super, super rad set. Goddamn it, though; sets should come with a shelf. I really can't be bothered going to IKEA, Lego.

Just got mine yesterday and built the hotel last night. Really impressed with all the tiny details and can't wait to build another one tonight. We have grand emporium built and fire brigade is on its way and I was thinking that I would wait to build the available modulars before building the mini counterpart.

Yeah, and I think it has been for a short while now.

It's out of print, but Amazon.com still has it for MSRP.

Thanks guys

Studying in the UK at the moment and returning to Canada for the summer. Wanted to pick up a big set to play with once I get back.

They have The Fire Brigade modular here for 99 pounds which is much cheaper than paying $200CAN back home (~130pounds). So I think I will go the way of the modular instead of the Tantive.

QF-45 Sarigar Parts List is completed, and formatted into Bricklink Wishlist XML.

Good news - it costs approx $100 to order all (well most, see below) parts new, so it's not too bad considering there's 767 parts and the model weighs 500 grams. I don't know if this thing is much bigger than it seems at first, or the bricks are packed together so much that it's so heavy - probably both. It's really crazy to think this thing is apparently an original design too, not based on an existing sci-fi ship. It's so great looking, on top of being incredibly put together.

Bad news - some parts appear to be really rare and out of production, so good luck finding them new, or even finding them at all in the amount needed. Also, I think I had to source parts from four sellers just to get it all, even though some are used parts, and I was really scraping by for some parts, barely finding enough of them.

Here's the archive with three files:
QF-45 Sarigar Parts List.zip - 0.01MB

"Bricklink Wishlist XML.txt" is the list of all parts, converted into an XML format you can use on Bricklink to automate the searching and ordering process.

"Total Parts.txt" is the list of all parts in a readable format, with parts names and amounts.

"Parts by Image.txt" is the list of parts sorted by instruction images provided by this model's author here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dasnewten/sets/72157626558179225/

This way you can look at each image, and see more easily what parts are supposed to be used there.

Phew! It was a tough job, but someone had to do it. In the end, building this:

will make it all worth it.

So you are building the stand too?

Just finished the X-Wing. It really was a blast, the way they lock the foils is just awesome. My only real complaint would be the wings...after the second one I was ready to move on. Overall very cool and it took me around 2 hours.

Completed Town Hall, as mentioned by others, it's not as fun a build as the Firehouse, but I found it quite enjoyable, and it's still a great set.

Few things I really liked

The Front Doors - They're just neat. Simple but they look great.

The Date - The way they did the date on the top is 1000x better and more sturdy than the date on the firehouse. The Firehouse date was very creative as far as assembly, but it just wasn't sturdy.

The Elevator - Particularly after doing The Death Star, I appreciate this nice creative elevator. The death Star has one that didn't really stay centered, and the central elevator was a joke as far as sturdiness and design.

Things I did not like

The Front Doors - Yeah, love and hate, they look great, but why they didn't spread out the pillars by two more studs so that the front doors could actually open is beyond me. they don't even open wide enough for a mini fig to fit through.

Floor connections - Only connecting floors by 4 studs makes it seem flimsy The Firehouse connects by more studs and is sturdy, and still easy to remove.

Agree 100% with the bolded. The date comes together beautifully on Town Hall, where it always looks slightly off on Fire Brigade. I mentioned about the floors in my review. It is my most severe gripe with the set. And actually, the Fire Brigade connected with ZERO studs. It was connected by actually laying into a groove almost and going slightly below the top layer on the previous floor. It just kind of clicked into place and felt awesome.

The elevator I am indifferent to. I love how it stays from floor to floor, but I wish the elevator itself had more detail.

Well, I just finished the Y-Wing build a few minutes ago. It is a really fun and fast build. There is nothing too insane or complex in it and can easily be done in under an hour (maybe half if you are really fast), but it has so many neat little techniques through the entire build that are fascinating. The way they achieve the little details and how it all comes together is so fun. And it looks fucking ace once built.

All of the new Star Wars (real trilogy) ships this year have been ace. Fun builds, and they look really, really good when completed. It gives me very high expectations for the UCS B-Wing.

One thing with the Y-Wing though. It felt so strange doing such a short and small build (458 pieces) after I have done 5 super large builds in a row (Imperial Shuttle, Millenium Falcon [the current non UCS model], Fire Brigade, Town Hall, and Tower Bridge). It felt so weird only having like 6 bags total for a set and to see something come together so fast when you are used to 3-12 hour builds. That did not diminish the fun of putting it together, but many here can understand how odd it must feel to do a normal sized set after doing a bunch of massive builds in a row.

And actually, the Fire Brigade connected with ZERO studs.

Huh? The roof connects via jsut two studs int eh front,b ut it's the roof.

The 2nd floor connects via 6 studs, 4 in the front, and the 2 on the pop out block holding the top of the fire-pole.

All in all I think town hall should have been connected with the same 4x1 pieces they use, but have one in all 4 corners, not just 2.

I had to go pull the Fire Brigade off the bookcase to double check, and you are right. It is much, much more subtle than Town Hall. So subtle I never noticed it. I always looked at how there were slightly protruding pieces from the bottom of the above floors to go below the wall of the previous floor. It connects just below the top of the bottom wall instead of directly on top of the wall, which leads to a much sturdier feeling.

I guess it just felt so right that I never noticed it was studs catching, where on Town Hall it felt just a bit cheap and flimsy as the floors locked together.

Get ready for LEGO City to become even more of a police state. :p

Strong showing for the Falcon and the Fire Temple!

Falcon is high because it is fucking sexy. It is the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy!

And the strong showing of the Police makes me hope we get a totally kick ass police station for a modular next year. They should make it with a helipad on the top floor and come complete with a mini copter or something.

I want an old-timey movie theater (with the fancy marquee out front) as the next modular. Imagine this build (and the interior)!

Something like that, but a bit more 1920's/30's.

That would be incredible.

That is the beauty of the modular line. There are so many awesome things you could do with it. A movie theater. A book store. A restaurant. A police station.

We already have many normal city things. I do think a movie theater, book store, or restaurant would be the coolest thing to add (no matter how much I want a kick ass police station) because they would be very unique sets.

Man, a movie theater would be so awesome. Just build a screen for the back wall. The second floor would be a balcony with seating. Damn you for planting that idea. I want it.

I would like to see a theater, but I don't see how it could be done given dimension restrictions. Even that one you pictured is not set on a modular sized base.

Yeah. And you would not be able to put many seats in it. Unless they sell a double size modular (two base plates wide!) and make it a grand opera house style or something.

Speaking of which, why the fuck did they use two half base plates for the Fire Brigade instead of one regular sized one? Made no sense to me. Using two halves for something like Pet Shop makes sense since it is two buildings, but there was no reason to do it for Fire Brigade other than to add one piece to the piece count, or to annoy me when you join them together.

It was probably that they had tons of the half plates in that shade already made and didn't want to waste them.
