Legend of Korra |OT| - Saturday Mornings Just Got Better

Good episode, liked it up until the very ending. I'm very freaked out about this romance stuff. The original series kept romance as a minor subplot and largely deferred it until the show was practically over—and, given the saccharine sweetness in the subsequent comic, I think we should all be glad they did. All those characters had a lot more issues to deal with (war, famine, exile etc) and none were introduced primarily as a love interest. Here, the first thing a new core character does is to hit on the main character...

It's possible to make a convincing argument that the original Gaang was more mature despite being much younger than the new cast. I know the new guys dont have to worry about a powerful emperor bent on genocide but... well, instead of sneaking out at night to find out more about the Triad or to heal a pollution ravaged fishing village, our heroine is sneaking out to watch a sports game. There are 'competent adults' who take care of all the more important stuff while the teenage cast can be playing games and romancing :?

Of course I'm not going to judge until the end of the season. I just... I miss Iroh.

I admit I had my doubts at first, but this seems like it may even surpass the original series.

do we know when they will be airing the next episode?

So excellent. So. Good.

Meelo is my favorite character.

Also we need a gif of Tenzin cheering when Korra scored.

Already exists.

Man, I was pretty optimistic going in to this but have been pretty let down. The magic is kinda gone. Also I really dislike Tenzin. At least the second episode wasn't CONSTANTLY making references to Aang and friends like the first one. I'll keep watching, it wasn't terrible, just not the greatness I was hoping for.

? These episodes are better than the first two of Avatar imo. It's really too early to talk about greatness or whatnot.

Watching this in HD is glorious.

Meelo is crazy good.

The pro-bending matches were very exciting, it was like watching a real sport.
The dome is so gorgeous. The brothers are really cool. Dat Tenzin gif is really good.
I want the next episode so bad.

I think it's still to worry about the romance part. Yes it could happen that way but I think it will just be Mako having a crush on Korra while she ignore him for the most of the time.

Depends, Korra will start airing on April 14th. If they air it like they did today we will get a new episode a week later, if they split it up then it should be 2 weeks after that.

That's not what they show us most of the time though. It should flesh out the characters more in other directions. Perhaps the explanation of why Mako and Borin are living in the stadium will tie into the large story of Amon, the triads etc. I'm not so enthusiastic about the show dwelling for long on probending. Imagine if we had spent a whole season on Toph in the wrestling ring?

Loved the second episode. It had me laughing throughout. My favorite moment is actually when Tenzin lets the leaf fly through the boards. It's nice to finally see just how the air benders learn and hone their skills. Plus, Tenzin's kids are hilarious and we need more of them.

I'm sure they will flesh out the characters plenty in these 26 episodes, that's the least of my worries. Pro bending will play a big role I guess, but if this episode is an indicator they can handle a match every other episode in 3-5 minutes and be done with it.

And for the record, I would have loved more of Toph and all the crazy characters in that ring :)

I liked Tenzin and his fam and Mako. Korra is kind of getting on my nerves and kind of came of as really really unappreciative and bratty. I also don't get her story so far Aang watched his whole family and people get killed and he hated violence for it, but Korra is just hey im the avatar fuck you teach me.

Welcome to almost every teenager ever.

Also Aang didn't loathe violence because of the genocide. The air nomads taught a philosophy of non-violence. Aang even mentions that they find all life sacred, even down to the tiniest spider-fly.

Also someone mentioned cabbage man. I now have the theory that Amon is the descendant of the cabbage salesman, out for revenge for all the destroyed produce thanks to reckless benders.

I think Korra's biggest problem is that she was far too powerful and too good at bending at such a young age. she is powerful but has NO finesse. As shown in her fight against those gangsters.

She seems to be a powerful water bender but i doubt she can heal. She is a powerful fire bender but i don't see her using much lighting. She may be able to move mountains but not bend metal.
And air bending seems to be all about finessing and using a gentle touch.

At this point I think Aang is a much better and versatile bender then Korra is.

Pretty sure lightning only hit once in the series, and it is heavily implied that getting struck by a bolt of lightning is pretty much fatal in 99.99% of cases. The Avatar is unlikely to ever use it. Ever.

Aang never used lightning, healing, or metalbending either.

I 100% disagree. I'm liking these episodes far more than the beginning episodes of the first series.

Quick Question:
Do you guys/girls think that I can watch The legend of Korra with out watching Last Air bender first?

I kinda don't want to watch previous serie. Is that going to be a problem you think?

I came up with that one first! But glad to see I'm not the Only onethinking along these lines ^^

You can, but why would you? TLA is a masterpiece and a must watch if you ask me. Plus it will make you aprecciate Korra a lot more.

Well it's a new series so it's been made to appeal to both old and new fans. Watching TLA isn't necessary though it helps you to understand the world and mythology better.

Also it's one of the best animated shows out there so I don't get why you wouldn't want to watch it.

Yeah, you could. But why would you want to? TLA is awesome.

You'd probably miss a few references, but it would still be great.

But seriously, do yourself a favor and watch the first series.

You'll miss out on:
1. One of the greatest cartoons ever created.
2. A ton of references and jokes
3.The background for the entire show.

This is probably old news to most of you but I just got my TLA Artbook (which is awesome!!!) and saw that originally Aangs partner was supposed to be a Polarbear-dog, together with a quote of Bryan saying he has a feeling he might appear somwehere else..

It's Naga! Very cool that they didn't let an idea from the conception face of the show go to waste :)

Once Korra is released on DVD (or will this series be released on Blu-ray?) I will buy it and the previous series even if it costs hundreds of dollars.

Is the first series reasonably priced?

I'm glad they used Appa in the original show. Suited Aang better.

Also, I know we are only 2 episodes in, but so far, Appa >>>> Naga.

AHAHAHAHA. No.

Naga is going to be awesome, just you wait.

But I did almost shed a tear or two when
Appa was kidnapped.

I remember Bryan saying in the artbook that he wasn't too thrilled about how far the team took the animal hybrid idea (especially with the pig hybrids lol).

It is okay. I wanted to buy the DVDs before, but apparently tehy released really shitty DVDs here in Europe with horrible image quality, so I didn't do it yet :(

I prefer Appa as well, but I think Naga has potential as well. I loved how she helped out Korra when the Metalbenders attacked her.

I think the probending circuit will have a nice amount of time/importance since it will be a platform for Korra's training (Tenzin admitted as much) and the relationship with her and the brothers since she's the new teammate. She may learn what makes them tick , maybe some romance hints like when she was teasing Mako and also dealing with loss
since at some point Bolin will be missing/captured.

Hell even AMON will appear and fucking wreck the place.

Am I the only one who doesn't like pro-bending? It was just boring every time a match was the focus. Definitely going to be the low point in the show for me. Then again, I find sports in general to be mind numbingly boring. Everything else about the ep was awesome though.

Can you blame them? They're nearly adults. The original cast was made up of kids. Korra's like 17.

As someone who hates watching IRL sports, I found the pro-bending matches to be pretty exciting.

I really like how much work they put into the bending sport. Hell, they put so much work into everything and it really shows.

Funny how people see things like that differently.

Personally I love the sport, it's a more competetive, yet less serious take on bending and fighting. And it looks like they are keeping the matches nice and short, so it doesn't overstay its welcome.

if we are just going off characters alone so far I have to agree. Toph and Iroh were my favorites. But we are just 2 episodes in so Korra has time to develop as a'series.

Iroh was definitely one of the better characters (if not the best) in the original series. I think Tenzin can rival him though.

I'm one of the few that disliked Toph though. Except for the spa episode. Really liked her then.

Thanks for all the replies. I watched a couple of episodes of TLA, but I did not "capture me". I did not find it so funny. I hope I'll like Korra, becuase it looks awesome.

The whole "Aang vs. Korra" and "1st series vs 2nd" shit.

The internet was built upon the back of the Kirk vs Picard argument. "Protagonist v. Protagonist" is timeless and a good indicator of a franchise that is high enough in quality to attract such passionate fans. I want a third series now if only to add a Sisko to the discussion.

Oh I have no problem with it at all. I was just explaining what I thought the dude was referring to.

I'd suggest keeping up with TLA. It may capture you in a bit. What episode did you get up to?

I've found that Avatar takes a few episodes before you can see the later brilliance. By the time The Storm hits, it's obvious. You might want to consider skipping the episode before it, though!

they have a much larger budget this time, the quality of the first 2 episodes is amazing. certainly an improvement over ATLA.
episode one was only ok for me, probably because they had to introduce a whole bunch of new stuff and connect to ATLA . episode two is significantly better. the creators of the show certainly haven't lost their magic, the new characters are all very likable and alive, which imo is what separates ATLA from the rest of the cartoons.
it's good to see korra display her awesome avatar power. aang never did anything too fancy and mainly just airbended. i'd say in two episodes, korra has kicked way more ass(es) than aang did in two seasons! i definitely like korra's personality better, she's a little bratty in episode two, but remember how toph acted when she was first introduced to the group? it's a recurring theme in the series, it seems.

That's what I wanted to write. Everyone should watch the series up to Episode 12 "The Storm" and maybe skip "The Great Divide". If you don't like the show at that point, it might not be for you.

Just finished the first 2 episodes. They looked great on my new iPad. I'm so glad the website works well with it. Now in regards to the episodes, the first thing that stood out was the top notch animation. Things appeared a lot smoother and more fluid than TLA. I am concerned about the show feeling too dull what with the main focus being within the city. What made the former show great was the epic globetrotting. Also, just an unlikely thought, but wouldn't it be cool if Korra had a bit of an Anakin (terrible association) storyline where she undoes a lot of Aangs progress? In either case, great start. Hope they keep the twilight romance bullshit to a minimum.

Yeah, skip The Great Divide.

Rewatching the episode: Bolin clearly wants Korra. I hope they end up together by the end of the series. I wonder if there will be drama between the brothers over Korra. SHIPPING WARS BEGIN!

edit: Did Mako's eye color change midepisode? I swear they were light brown one part, and green the next, then back to brown.

Um are those guesses or real spoilers (I added tags just in case) :/
