Legend of Korra |OT| - Saturday Mornings Just Got Better

I am concerned about the show feeling too dull what with the main focus being within the city. What made the former show great was the epic globetrotting.
Kind of true! But the best part of the original series was the Ba Sing Se arc. That was a whole bunch of episodes in and around a single city.

the best part of ATLA was azula. and they had to make her insane, or else she'd be too powerful for zuzu and katara to tackle. it's bullshit that she went nuts though, as she was always prepared that her friends would eventually betray her, she even said so herself.

For me The Blind Bandit was the point that turned TLA from good/great to HOW IS THIS SO GOOD. After that the awesome episodes just kept on coming.

She can say that all she wants, but inside she was a much more fragile person than she pretended to be who was counting on her friends in her own way. Deal with it!

At least that's how i saw it.

Azusa was always on the edge. Remember the party at the beach? Yeah, thought she was insane then.

Can you blame them? They're nearly adults. The original cast was made up of kids. Korra's like 17.
Zuko, Sokka etc were nearly adults as well but all the characters in the first series had to grow up fast due to the circumstances they were in. They were more mature at a younger age. They fell in love too of course but it didn't play out like the usual teenage show. I mean Katara explicitly told Aang at one point that they got a world to save and romance can wait. This new world is different. I mean I get the logic: the world is (kinda) at peace now and will be teenagers will be teenagers etc. Aang tried to have his fun in some of the first few episodes (like at Kyoshi village) but then quickly realized he had to balance that with his responsibility as Avatar. Korra just seems to be running around doing whatever. I really don't want to spend perhaps 10 or more episodes watching her playing sports and navigating teenage romance.

I miss Iroh. More than any other adult on the first show he treated the kids like equals and really allowed them to grow, learn their lessons and find their own way. Tenzin really does seem like a horrible mentor in comparison :/ it'll be one rebellion after another for the rest of the season I expect.

it was pretty obvious she was not though regardless of what she thought.

Imagining a scenario and having it actually happen are different.

Also she was mentally weakened by the fact that her father
basically gave her a meaningless position, and was beginning to treat her like Zuko.

Her going insane made sense. Actually, she was basically a sociopath at the start. So her insanity only worsened, it didn't come out of nowhere.

It certainly was hinted at far more in the series than fucking energy bending.

Iroh became a great character in a span of like 70 episodes. In season 1 he was mostly saying "wanna have some tea?" after Zuko's "I HATE LIFE" moments. He became the real star in season 2 and 3.

Give the characters some time to develop. We're only two eps in.

JK Simmons was pretty amazing as Tenzin. He was unrecognizable and on top of that its nice to see him break away from that stereotypical gruff type.
All I hear is a murdering Arryan brother psycopath

I just finished watching this episode. It´s was a great episode except one thing.
Fire bending is supposed to be the opposite of water not air bending

Tenzin specified that it is the element that is opposite the personality of the Avatar.

Typically that is the element opposite their natural element, but there are exceptions.

edit: Holy fuck, beaten so badly.

That's why they said that it also has to do with the nature of the bender. Korra is the exact opposite of what an airbender is supposed to be. She is brute force, hot headed and confrontation in person, while airbenders are evasive and calm.

This so much.

Though it makes me wonder how she mastered waterbending so easily. I guess water has the benefit of being able to be used offensively instead of just defensively.

Just finished watching them--really liked it. I'm going to be really interested to see them explore the social elements hinted at in the first episode.

Also, the joke about
Zuko's mom
was some pretty fantastic trolling.

See thing is she doesn't have a world to save yet. Atm it's peaceful. Where as in the original series, they had a world to save. the fire nation was everywhere and every day wasted was another day the Fire nation grew stronger.

they had to make her fragile on the inside because they had to. they've made azula too powerful, child prodigy, excellent strategist and shoots lightning at will. remember how she nearly killed aang, and frequently took on three or more master benders? she was never unstable until the last season, in which she suddenly developed abandonment issues.
she was such a good character, i just wish that the creators made katara and zuko win against her fair and square, without wimping her out.

She was always crazy. Her breaking down didn't come out of left field.

She was a prodigy, because the firebending taught to them was powered by anger and hatred. A child mastering such abilities should send off a couple dozen alarm bells.

Hints of her being unstable were dropped pretty early, with the clearest example being when she first practiced lightning bending.

The first sign was her smirking at Zuko's face getting burnt by their father.

Forgot about that.

But I guess I see where Twilight Princess is coming from. Besides her sociopathic behavior, bloodlust, lack of any real friends, and complete mastery of corrupted firebending powered by anger and hatred, there were absolutely no hints dropped that she may have a few screws missing!

What broke Azula was
when Ty Lee and Mei opposed her. She always thought she had them in the bag. After that, she coudnt trust anyone.

And the fact that she spent her life trying to win the love of her father, who then awarded her by giving her a useless position, and basically discarding her after he could set his final phase of his plan into motion.

Pro Bending is really well developed. Like, "I would watch a spinoff that focuses on an unlikely amateur with a ragtag team of lovable losers who dream about winning the big pro bending tournament" developed.

Well that was rational because she knew it made her the only heir. Ruthless, but not yet crazy.
Which it set things in stone, Azula didn't need Zuko to be banished to get the throne. Azula was always a prodigy and the "favoured" child. It wouldn't have been too difficult to make Zuko look incompetent and Persuade Ozai to name her heir to the throne. The way I see it, She just got pleasure out of not having to get her hands dirty.

Azula was a made sociopath, not a born one though. I think that much is pretty obvious.

I think it's a bit of both.
