I don't know, fire nation society, the whole emperor worship, the military culture and the war aggression are all very similar to 20th century Japan.

and... ya know, the whole fact that they're an island nation.

obviously, none of the four elements/nations directly correspond to anything 100%, but I think it's pretty clear they wanted to evoke 20th century industrializing Japan with the fire nation.

Sorry for not reading the thread, but is it up yet? And can someone point me towards it? Thx.

If you're not from the US, there is a link for you on the previous pages but apparently we aren't allowed to post it anymore. It's still there though :)

Damn you Obsessed!

Huh, water benders can't use ice in pro bending?

That's super lame.

Well, I'd assume they can't.
Water is a pain, but ice is deadly.

I think ice moves are more of a stop or stun attack, so thats why I think they don't use ice

Yes ice is definitely not allowed, Bryan stated that much in the rules video. It would be an unfair advantage, since the water bender could just freeze one person and the others knock him out while he isn't able to do anything.

I think that they are only allowed to throw those disks and fling fire/water "balls". Anything else would just be overpowered. Take for instance the water-whip Katara liked to use. With that they could just pick the opponents up and throw them out the back. Or if they were allowed to pull up tidal waves from the sides the could just wash the opponents away.

The water whip Korra used should be fine as long as the enemy bender is throwm off the ring in the back. At least there's nothing so far thatstates such an attack is forbidden.
But yes, they are only allowed to use the 'resources' (earth discs and water) from the field they are in.

So Quidditch IRL became a big thing.

I can totally see their being Pro-Bending like rules, especially with a dodgeball like game. You get hit, you move back a zone.

Asami Sato seems a lot more Japanese than names usually are. It's the Fire Nation that has more Japanese-inspired culture right? From memory:

Air = Tibet, Nepal, etc
Water = Inuit
Earth = Korean, Southern China?
Fire = Imperial Japan, Northern China?

You can't just lump people in together like that.
Oh they live in the same area - they are all the same.
You are like a few degrees away from racism.

Also unlike Quidditch, actual work was put into the Pro-Bending rules.

Quidditch was such a mess of a rules system. Fucking golden snitch is bullshit.

It would just be teams with three sets of ball (Brown, Red and Blue), then?

Probably. Dodgeball with 3 zones. If you get hit (or don't block it with your own ball, or catch it) you move back a zone. If you are hit while in zone 3 you are out.

Ball color doesn't matter.

Pro-Bending IRL

Each team starts in Zone 1. They each have a ball at their feet. You get ball refills thrown in from the sideline. NOT sure if catching a ball would count for anything other than being safe.

If you get hit, you move back a zone and so on.

It'd be really easy to do.

You might be right, but Kiyoshi Island is still the most overt example of Japanese influence in the Avatar world. They pick and choose influences and mash them all together in different places.

The music in this show is SPECTACULAR!
The ruling they made on the Avatar was pretty fair.
Now to look for reaction and GIFs, seriously this ep. had them by the bucketload~

I am loving everything about the old school 20's vibe.

The whole MMA vs. TMA is also awesome.

This really made me laugh:

All of Aang's descendants are really likable.

I was gonna post something along those lines...but thought it was inappropriate so I didn't.
...and now I am reminded of the family talk he had with his daughters XD

"... I will make no such promises"

Yeah, Tenzin's kids are all great. I want to know how good of an airbender they already are.
Genora (or how her name is spelled) obviously seems like the master student and Meelo probably only knews the basics due to his age, but still.

Edit: beaten AGAIN! at least with a gif ^^

The kids are probably about on par with Aang at the same age.
Especially given who their father and grandfather are.

You think? I was under the impression that Aang was already a master airbender. I guess Genora might be close, but the others? It would be awesome if it were true of course. I wonder if we'll see them fight during the series.

Oh you said at the same age. Yeah you're probably right then.

I mean like, at Meelo would be the same level as Aang was at his age.
And so on.
They are obviously extremely skilled, despite being young. Already mastering the Orb Cycle and what not.

I doubt it. The Avatar's natural talent in his/ her base element seems insurmountable.

Not to mention Jinora, despite being around the same age as Aang(in A:TLA), lacks the arrows signifying Airbending mastery

Second Episode was better than the first.

Loved Tenzin's kids and the smallest kid's expressions.

Anyway, I was thinking of making an official thread for Ultimate Spider-man show.

I asked this in GL thread and the Thundercats, do I need permission from the mods or does someone have dibs ?

Aang was an Airbending prodigy, becoming the youngest ever master in air nomad history. I think it's safe to say his grandchildren aren't quite on his level.

There's a thread in the Community Forum where you can ask for OT permissions.
Just post that you want to make it there. If no one objects, then you're good.

Check this thread to see if anyone's already called it and if not, lay your claim to prevent others usurping you.

EDIT: Beaten!

Aang shouldn't count. Avatars have an unfair advantage it seems.

Aang shouldn't count when people are directly comparing him to his grandkids? :p

But I don't think that Avatars actually have a significant advantage when it comes to learning bending. Roku didn't seem to be especially good at firebending before finding out he was the Avatar and it took him 12 years to learn the other elements.

Nope since you can use water for face shots so ice being solid would be a nono. Also you can only use the earth disks for body shots. Plus the whole freeze in place thing.

Each element have their own limitations in the game that basically evens the playing field and allows each member to pull their own weight.

I don't think Jinora is older than 10 honestly.

No, he spent 12 years not just learning the elements, but completely mastering them while immersing himself completely in the culture of each nation.

And we only watched like three minutes of him firebending before 16 against another talented firebender, neither serious.

There's still one thing that's bugging me about Pro-Bending.

If 1 player from Team A is knocked back to zone 2 while the entirety of Team B is knocked back into their zone 2, is that 1 player allowed to rejoin the rest of the team which is now in Team B's zone 1? Or does he/she just advance one zone into the original Team A zone 1?

Super duper ms-paint illustration showing team A before advancing.

The real cheating would be to create a frozen wall above the gratings.

Yeah, that's the only thing I'm unclear in so far. The one player shoudl at least be allowed to move back up to zone 1.

When Mako was alone in Zone three and he knocked back the remaining enemy bender to his respective zone three, he was allwoed to move up all the way to enemy zone two. I guess allowing the whole team to move up to the same zone would make more sense.

So did Zuko and Aang....

zuko lost his firebending after he lost his rage. He needed a new way to firebend, and thats what the dragons supplied. Aang always had that hang up about Fire= rage and destruction

I dont see any inner conflicts like that so far with Mako and Korra

My guess is that Zuko and Aang worked together to transform the culture around firebending, and return it to its original form of being about heat and life energy.

The firebending based around rage and destruction was a fairly recent cultural phenomenon IIRC, and was spread to aid the war effort.

Also if you watch the earlier episodes of original series you see Iroh dropping hints of the original style to Zuko. A very nice touch.

This made me LOL, because I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw that. XD Although, realistically, on Mako's part it's probably more general pondering. Korra looks spot on though. Haha!

And anyone who compares Mako to Edward Cullen will get an internet punch in the face from yours truly, as well as anyone else trying to pidgeon-hole the characters. It is an insult to Brykim! (Mike-Bryan-Joaqim) Keep your vicious slander and shipping vomit to your nasty little swamp blogs where they belong- you give Avatar fans a bad name. *spits over shoulder*

HEEEGGHHHKK! Hissssssssss!! ARRARRARARARARARAH-
