I just saw hunger games this morning. The 10AM show as sold out (WTF? only a 200 person theater though) and went to the 10:30 which was 90% full for a theater of 500. Movie was good and I think its going to continue to do gangbusters.

Avatar is ONE BILLION dollars ahead of the #2 film worldwide, and it made DOUBLE the next film after that. Hell, only 7 films period have made a billion dollars. My 25 years may be pushing it, but your 10 years is pushing it just as much in the other direction.

I disagree. You are really underestimating the huge potential of the growing economies. For instance Tranformers DOTM has made 145$ million in China, 45$ million in Russia, and 22 million in Brazil. The potential growth for these markets are huge in the upcoming years.

China´s movie market in 2011. This link shows that Tranformers made 172 million. China´s movie market in up 28.9 YOY.

They showed the DKR trailer before hunger games and all the Tweens were going nuts with applauses.

Because Nolan has a mole.

It'll be more than a decade before anyone touches Avatar, and it'll be some gamechanging shit. Probably when the first must-see holoMAX movie is released!

Just as it was more than a decade before the Cameron Clash even took place :0

Definitely surprised at the amount for HG, but I've heard a lot of people talking about it around me that I wouldn't expect. Had an awful lot of buzz going for it.

Do you think the re-release will make Titanic number one again?

Avatar currently sits at $2,782,275,172

and Titanic at $1,843,201,268

That´s not my point at all. My point is China and other emerging markets will have a huge influence on WW box office. This is undeniable. And these markets are growing at unprecedented rate.

Will that growth be enough to top Avatar? I only see the sequels having a shot within the next 15 years.

Technically, it's 10, since movies like TF3, Pirates 4, and HP7 Pt. 2 all made a billion last year, but it will be quite some time regardless. Titanic looked unfeasible to pass too back in 1997-1998, but lo and behold Avatar did it in convincing fashion.

March has been a fantastic month for the box office, and marketing! We got to witness both sides of the spectrum when it comes to box office success and quality of marketing campaigns.

The month has truly been a case study on doing something VERY RIGHT and something VERY VERY WRONG.

Eh... Hunger Games didn't do that great overseas though. Titanic is bound to do really well overseas.

I said this in the OT but if Lion King 3D can reach 94 million in the US for its rerelease, Titanic shouldn't have any problem surpassing that, especially with all the ads they've been running.

I think Titanic will do about $150 million total which is phenomenal. But still less than THG's opening weekend.

I find it super sad how some people are so quick to close themselves off

"I dont know anything about the hunger games, ergo it must be twilight garbage"

Great way to live your life guys. Mushroom in your own ignorance.

Yikes, I am totally gobsmacked by Hunger Games performance. In December I would have put cash money on this film opening near $75m AT MOST but this performance, for a non sequel, is staggering.

Kudos to Lionsgate and hopefully this big box office 'win' means that this trilogy and Twilight (now that they own Summit) can secure their future for the long term and keep them a buyer in the marketplace.

It'll be fascinating to see if Lionsgate can use this to try and expand their slate and join the 'big studios' such as WB etc in time.

They could be the studio that 'young adult' books built.

damn @ hunger games. i thought it was a pretty good movie. i had just finished the book and they left a lot out but what are you supposed to do in a 2 hour movie? woody was awesome! he should be in every movie!

thumbs up for hunger games and 21 jump street doing well!

I can't see Titanic making more than Lion King but who knows. Lion King is a way more protected franchise so there is pent up demand on a regular basis anyway. EDIT: Plus Lion King has half of the running time.

Titanic is regularly on so the only hook is 3D.

I honestly saw more JC marketing than HG marketing and HG's wasn't really that great. I'm thinking the book is the single biggest selling point of it.

Spoke to a friend who was walking out of the cinema after seeing Hunger Games and heard two fanboys chatting about the film's opening weekend numbers.

One was talking about how impressive the three day numbers were. The other said it was nothing and that The Amazing Spiderman's gross this summer would easily shit all over it.

A girl who was nearby and similarly listening in on their conversation said to her friend "They are making a new Spiderman movie?!".

It'll be more than a decade before anyone touches Avatar, and it'll be some gamechanging shit. Probably when the first Cyborg Linsey Lohan movie is released!

Fixed for the terrifying, eventual truth.

did Avatar really make that much money

why

Blue cat people be sexy yo.

Where be Sculli @ yo'?

Usually he's in here with the quickness

1 thing about Hunger Games, Yo' Disney, this is how you market a movie, smart, efficient, create a buzz in all areas to make people get interested in it

Hell a couple of times I'll leave my TV running and commercials are running in the background while I'm doing house chores, and that last whistle music kicks at the end of Hunger Games commercial, I even whistle it, that is some good subliminal advertising

Same with the Inception horn, and now Prometheus with that Blood Curdling Scream

You need to grab attention

First-person narration from a female protagonist involved in a love triangle, aimed primarily at teenage girls.

Teenage girls don't get a lot of attention when it comes to major Hollywood releases. Twilight is (I think) the first movie to really laser in on that demographic. The comparisons to The Hunger Games come because the books were aimed at the same demo, and the movie is being pitched to those same teenage girls because it turns out you can make a ton of money doing that. THG is better than Twilight in basically every conceivable way, and seems to be trying to prove you can target teenage girls with a movie and not make a total piece of unwatchable shit that won't appeal to anyone else, but the Twilight crowd were the most likely to buy in and so the similarities got played up (Team Gale vs Team Peeta, etc.)

This is pretty true. I found the Team Gale vs. Team Peeta media hype to be a little akwward. The love triangle is more prominent in the second and third novels but it is hardly the focal point of the narrative. I mean, it plays out as Katniss at times
adamantly reminds us that she will never marry/have kids, to hell with both of them. It is barely a love triangle in my opinion, it is obvious Peeta is the man she will end up with; each male serves to represent a different set of ideals or world view more than anything else.
The difference between reading Twilight and The Hunger Games is that I could actually enjoy Twilight whilst not taking it too seriously because of the amount of pure kitsch. It concerns me that young girls idolize the relationship between Bella and Edward and perceive it as the perfect picture of true love.
The love story in THG is much more mature and compelling and it isn't even the point of the trilogy

The Raid kicked ass! Hopefully it will do just as well as it expands. Also great to see 21 Jump Street continue to do extremely well, can't wait for that sequel.

I don't think any tracking had The Hunger Games that high, simply insane. I look forward to the rest of the trilogy.
