I've mentioned this several times before, but they already explained in one of the panels that the ruling council is comprised of an Airbender (Tenzin), a Waterbender, a Firebender, and an Earthbender. It's the central conflict in the series, I don't see how this could have been an afterthought.

No, I understand that. I'm talking about the first series, Avatar TLA. Did they already have this idea then about this conflict arising or came up with it after that series ended? I'm not saying that there is no room for tensions between benders and non-benders, there clearly is. I'm just noting that the division between bender and non-bender is sort of complicated because they are already so mixed together.

Well, Toph mocks Sokka for being a Non-bender in The Chase and he whines about it a bit in Sokka's Master, but there wasn't really anything overt. But even in TLA virtually all the high ranking positions were held by benders.

I just feel like maybe this is something that the creators thought up much later. I thought we had seen some non-benders in high positions before. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the Earth King just a regular dude? The fact that benders and regular people can have children that are the opposite of them would make it so benders would also have some stake in non-benders being treated well.

The Earth King was a nonbender, but I really don't think he is a good example. At that point it was a puppet government and the people actually in charge were benders.

Really liking the new series so far! I was about to ask if they ever explained what happened to Zuko's mom before watching Korra! Damn tease!

They've promised that, well, The Promise will elaborate on this more. You can sort of see the groundwork being laid already in the first chapter.

The Promise will also answer this question.

They said we are going to find out in the comics and I think the next one releases after the first season is completed.

edit: Wasn't Katara's dad a non-bender who was also the head of the southern water tribe?

I saw the first episode. I SO wanna see the second. But I'd also love it if I can muster up enough courage to not see the episodes so I can do a marathon when it's over.

I saw the first two. Still, same situation as me. I just want to marathon it.

Because all the Benders were dead. The Southern Tribe was a skeleton village.

The Promise?

Are they continuing the Last Airbender series with the comics?

Wasn't he only head of the Southern tribe because all the benders had been taken as POWs?

Or was he tribe leader before then?

Southern Tribe: Muggle (but maybe only because all benders had been previously taken away)
Northern Tribe: Bendocracy
Earth Kingdom: Bendocracy, except Ba Sing Se which has a puppet government with a nonbender. However the benders still control Ba Sing Se.
Fire Nation: Bendocracy.

Benders still controlled most of the the world in ATL.

Yep.

actually the fire nation normally capured/killed all the water benders they could find so its possible the head could have been a bender if it were not for that method.

Also lets say he was tribe leader:

Southern Tribe: Muggle
Northern Tribe: Bendocracy
Earth Kingdom: Bendocracy, except Ba Sing Se which has a puppet government with a nonbender. However the benders still control Ba Sing Se.
Fire Nation: Bendocracy.

Benders still controlled most of the the world in ATL.

The Earth King regained control of his kingdom after the end of the series, it was in the Promise Part 1. You see him negotiating with Zuko. I imagine that in the original series he would have been a puppet king even if he was a bender.

So Amon is either

1) Zuko

2) Zuko's son (calling it now, Azula never had children)

3) Zuko's grandson

I doubt it.

doubt any of that.

We know Dante Basco is coming back to do a voice of someone related to Zuko. And Amon is voice by Steve Blum. So that kinda/sorta kills your theories.

amon is obviously going to be sokka.

Yes Katara wouldn't lie to us :(

btw, I really, really hope we see the theme of "some friendships are so strong that they can even transcend lifetimes" again during this series. Somebody besides Katara has to be alive.

Forget the demonspawn of Azula and Cabbage merchant, Amon is Sokka's estranged son. Resentful that his parents never truly got the recognition they deserved, he learned chi blocking from the Kyoshi Warriors and faked his own death. Now he plans the ultimate revenge in Republic city so normal people will never be overshadowed by benders ever again.

Katara already fulfills that theme, but I would be disappointed if we don't see an old Toph. Hell, I'd like to see Zuko still be the Fire Lord in his old age.

Yes I thought of Katara, she kind of qualifies but I think it's weird because she and Aang were lovers...

Kortara!
