Knew nothing about the books and didn't go into the film hyped.
The scenes with the district 11 guy and Cato were just awkward imo and could have been shot better.
Overall I really enjoyed the film, especially Katniss's character.

Also was I the only one who thought Katniss was saying Peter in a weird accent.
I didn't find out till the end of the film when my friend told me his name was Peeta, I couldn't stop laughing.

I thought the movie was absolutely awful, and there were a few unintentionally hilarious moments where I would have burst out laughing if I wasn't in a theater. I hope they fired the cameraman for drinking on the job, and the writer for ever putting pen to paper. Maybe the director too -- I'm pretty film-ignorant so I don't know how much I should blame on the direction.

The book was great, but this...this was something else.

One thing that I really, really loved though was the wildfire scene. The back-and-forth between Katniss desperate fleeing from the raging inferno and the gamemakers calmly, mechanically orchestrating it was fantastic.

The actors were also pretty good considering the abysmal script they had to work with.

I'm not a big fan of gratuitous gore/violence, but I feel like the movie would have benefited from more brutality. It would have been a nice contrast to the cheesiness.

edit:lol@people complaining about the mechanics of the fireballs. "Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" or however that goes.

I can't imagine how splitting Catching Fire or Mockingjay would work.

I literally just finished Catching Fire. It would be impossible to split the book. Hell they need to trim the fuck out of the book especially the earlier parts.

I do understand now why people said this series was a downhill slope from the first book onwards.

This isn't like, a witty retort or something. I agree with him.

If you thought Star Trek was dumb, then under the criteria "sci-fi blockbuster" and "done right", which sci-fi movies have made more money during the summer that you thought were more intelligent?

It was Suzanne Collins.

not to mention remake time paradox bullshit or whatever. seriously; leave your brain at the door sci-fi + villian just sat around for yonks waiting to take revenge.

lens flare is the new jazz hands

populist scifi actioneer with overly photogenic looking leads and flashy visuals and wasn't intelligent = sci fi blockbuster done right? okay.

Also doesn't matter if it "made more money.etc el". THG is already a big hit.

1) Bullet trains exist today. Infact, the fastest train goes over 300 mph
2) A ship that looks like a UFO is just a ship until it does something UFO like
3) The holo room I'll give you, but sticking a camera in a tree isn't exactly cutting edge technology

As for another point brought up earlier, there are genetically altered animals today.

Real fireballs materializing out of thin air is lazy. As some stated earlier, show some cannons come out of the ground and fire those off, or something. When it comes to the dog creatures, you gotta do something to make that type of technology seem feasible before the last 10 minutes of the movie. I would have suggested something like letting the kids choose from a list of food off of a virtual menu while on the train or before the games and have it materialize before them to eat. That is a small, easy solution that instantly makes that dog crap credible.

But they are making it credible. This is just the first part of the story. I haven't seen the movie yet but in the book they explain all about genetically altered animals being possible. The mocking jay and the wasp things are genetically altered animals and insects. Why don't you have a problem with those?

Jesus Christ, people are still talking about the fireballs and dogs?

Also, what does it mean to be the "new Twilight"?

Wow, I had no idea THG was expected to be anywhere near that big of an opening. I follow movies pretty closely, but that really slipped under my radar. I would have taken a shot in the dark around $70-80 million. Damn.

What was the budget? It couldn't have been more than ~$100M or so, could it? Special effects were pretty meh, the sets were simple, and the cast, while good, didn't strike me as expensive.

Trek 09 shits on Hunger Games from great heights.

Does that make Twilight the "new Harry Potter"? I mean, honestly, I've never watched or read Twilight, but what else could it do? I always assumed it was a young adult romance novel series. Kind of a forced comparison at this point, though I don't know anything about the other two books so....

Hopefully it's not as terrible as you guys are making out in the sequel.

I just finished reading the second book and there were parts where I wanted to rip my eyeballs out.
I got like a third of the way into it before I became intensely aware that I was reading girls' young-adult fiction. Haven't picked it up since.

Because of cutting for time and such, the movie version might end up being better than the book, if that makes you feel any better.

EDIT: I'm gonna remove this just in an attempt to not get off-topic. I don't want to contribute to a pissing match. ;)

The second half is better but it's pretty bad. When I was reading it, I became acutely aware that the author was female and it felt like I was reading her roleplay.

Yeah, if they force a shitload of romance in to the 2nd one that'll be rather upsetting.
Please don't tell me something actually comes of the whole triangle seed they planted in the first one. That wouldn't make any sense at all for me considering I just assumed Katniss was playing the game

Judging by Robs avatar, he wants to bury Koodoo's opinion.

But I can't really say anything yet cause I haven't seen the movie yet.

I was supposed to go today but its raining and its probably packed, I hate people.

"My race died because of a catastrophe and because that one old Vulcan was fucking stupid/late. What next ? I got it, I'll use that portal, travel back in time, do something convenient/necessary for the plot for more than a decade, still be fucking angry, then destroy Vulcan and Earth. Remorse ? Nah, after all I'm a miner, we're trained for this shit."

I really liked the 09 movie (and it's certainly better than THG), but let's not pretend it's without flaws. If a movie is exciting (for whatever reason), one is usually willing to ignore some of the dumb things that happen.

It does however shit on John Carter from great heights from Mars.

Edit:
Haven't read the novels though, so I can't say if it becomes fucking stupid/annoying later on.

yup. we're going to sit in space for 10 years and wait to plot our REVENGE!!! /shakesfist.

@JOhnileham. wait for John Bomba to come out on dvd/blu. should be fairly soon /smirk

btw. Book2 of THG is hardly teenage romance. It factors but only because she's stuck in this 3 way. And its completely central to this plot vs twilight's ooo I like the pale shiny vampire. and the wolf that really doesn't have to love the annoying twatty girl. Plus oh god at taylor lautner. Talk about repulsive! Its amusing now that 3 way relationships = TWILGIHT.

wait for this scullibondo.
Titanic had a love triangle.
GASP!

and so did
star Trek 09.
GASP!!!

both so twilgiht.

I thought the movie was... alright. I went to a Sunday matinee and it was sold out... didn't expect it.

If they take the framework from book 2 and make it into a proper movie (and spend some money on the capital sets and the parade, good god that was cringe inducing) it should be pretty good.

Woody Harrelson wasn't nearly drunk and belligerent enough for Haymitch

Saw this and was OK with how they changed how Katniss got the pin, and OK with them glossing over the Aviroxes this time aorund.

Could tell by the ending that this was a 3 picture deal.

Wish they had pursued the dgobeast as former contestants.

Wes Bentley's beard was mesmerizing.

And will Donald Sutherland be around for all 3 movies? I hope so.

Regarding District 11:
I haven't read the books in a while, but I was under the impression that they didn't show the uprising in 11 until the beginning of Catching Fire, right before Katniss' meeting with President Snow. I was actually pretty surprised that outright showed it right after Rue's death. I was also surprised that they portrayed the Capitol's riot suppression as hosing instead of carpet-bombing.

It was probably to give the audience a glimpse of what was going to happen in the next movie or the series in general. Without that scene the ending would've been even more of a cliffhanger. Now, at least, the audience knows where things are headed.

It did seem VERY random and sudden though.
