To me it was pretty clear in the book, regardless, what is beyond clear is that Rue was defiantly not white so for those that are upset she was not, they just did not read properly.
Also in the book they make mention of Peeta's blond hair so I don't see how you could think he is Indian.

Sure to the latter, I just didn't see anything to indicate the former.
Must have missed that part (was it in the first book? I haven't read the latter books, and I often find in a lot of these discussions that it's assumed that anyone who read the first book has read all three), because most of the time she referred to him through the bread story (I do remember Katniss' mother's hair being blond). Really, outside of the rare reference to skin tone (like Rue) I don't recall the book ever really specifying ethnic backgrounds.

Disclaimer: I posted earlier that I thought the movie was horrible. Some of these complaints just seem off the mark.
That's an odd leap to make. The tributes having to play to the crowd and the voyeurism/sadism of the Capital were half the point of the story.
They were prepared for it, though. Hence all the cop dudes. And the adorable kid dying was business as usual, but a tribute showing compassion and respect for another district's dead was most definitely not. I don't remember if they showed it in the movie, but the Capital doesn't wear kiddy gloves when dealing with the uprising. It's a bloodbath, iirc.
There was nothing magic about them, and they just looked like bigass, ugly dogs in the movie. I also don't remember seeing their entrances -- did they show them "materializing from the ether" or are you just referring to the shot in the gamemakers' room?

It always beggars belief when people who have little access to food don't immediately eat when presented with an abundance of it. I was hoping for a mention of it being too dissimilar to what they were used to, like chocolate-covered meat or something.
That was a great beard! I loved his last scene. And Donald Sutherland is one of those elder statesman actors who don't even have to/bother to act anymore. No goofy hairstyle for him. It's enough just to see him on screen.
Are you really not getting the criticism? Nobody is sensitive about the technology. The direction of that scene is poor; it makes it seem like the dogs were created and materialize out of thin air. If that is how advanced they are, then the dependence/importance of the Districts seems unwarranted. But, they aren't that advanced, as in the books the beasts are released from underground tubes. We are criticizing the editing/direction. Do you have some book-based defense for the shaky-cam, too?

The only real shaky cam bit that was a real problem was
the final battle.
I disagree, it's a problem throughout the entire damn book. Katniss only has a very superficial view of the entire situation and even then is a complete waste of space.

Never read the books, but I enjoyed the movie. I was really engrossed in it, usually I find it hard to be sucked into fictional worlds without some factor breaking the immersion but it was nice to have that feeling again.
The biggest affect the film had on me is when I walked out I realized I was 26 years old, this movie made me feel like I was 16 again for better or worse, and than I got all nostalgic and sad, I miss those days. Time flys by doesnt it....

Haven't read the book, and I thought the movie was terrible. It started off well, but it fell so hard once the games began. Also, the camera work was fucking annoying. Couldn't make out shit during the action scenes. Or just about any scene.
Also was I the only one pissed off about how atrocious the touch panel UI looked in the control room? They should have just ripped it off from Avatar, y'know, something that actually made sense and didn't depict millions of graphics on a desk for the sake of it.

I also had to ask a friend who read about this. It didn't really make the noticeable difference I thought it would. To much emphasis and not enough usage in the movie. Apparently it was better in the book.

Oh and I went to the new imax in my city (added to an existing cineplex) and it was super disappointing. The screen wasn't that much bigger than the regular ones, audio was better though. PQ was just a tad better but not 16 dollars worth.

Avatar absolutely nailed that. Every time I watch it I am in awe of how well thought out the flight controller's UI's are. Along with the topographic holograms, mech HUDs etc etc.

Saw this yesterday, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Never read the book, and I couldn't figure out why people were pronouncing Peter's name so oddly... until recently when I read his real name. Anyways,
but looking at the big picture, it's an interesting and well-told story.
It was clear to me that Katniss didn't love him. Some minor gripes included what's already mentioned here (shaky-cam, instant-dogs...)

I have been to a real Imax though, about 14 years ago. The screen was easily 2.5 times bigger.
I'm looking forward to Catching Fire just for more Effie.

Yea, all around, I loved the casting.
Same haha, my friend couldn't stop laughing at me when I asked him why Katniss had an accent when pronouncing his name.
Anyone else had a sinking feeling in their chest seeing
the four or five kids working together. It was sad to think that, no matter how successful they would be at culling the rest of the contestants... their alliance would be pointless in the long run, since only one person can live in the end. I really liked it because I kept waiting for someone in the group to slash someone else's throat in their sleep. It made me tense whenever they were on screen with each other. They ended up going down one by one before they could ever turn on each other though. But still, I just thought it was pretty damn sad the way they would be laughing with each other, and the way the blonde would sleep with the alpha male - a meaningless friendship.

Was just talking about it w/ a friend and one thing that came up that they could have done better was the passage of time. She was with Rue for 4-5 days in the book, the whole thing was what, 2-3 weeks?

Just saw it. I liked it. Seems like a condensed version of the book, and they did a solid job with everything. Wish they could have added a bit more, and shown what Katniss was thinking somehow a bit more, but it worked.

EW ponders casting possibilities for Finnick in Catching Fire.
Many of the names listed I have seen come up before, and all but Chris Hemsworth would be bad, bad, bad. But, I never thought of their idea of Ryan Kwanten as Finnick. It is so out of nowhere it makes perfect sense.

Peeta I imagined a bit taller and bulky. Also handsome.

I think they did good with Peeta, I never pictured him being overly handsome. Gale almost seemed like overkill. Although man did I hate dude-bro main career guy, great casting, even I wanted to kill him.
