To me it was pretty clear in the book, regardless, what is beyond clear is that Rue was defiantly not white so for those that are upset she was not, they just did not read properly. But iirc she wasn't described as black, she was described as non-white, and the few details of life in D11 were so over-the-top in describing 19th century plantation life that I veered away from the childish obviousness, and assumed Rue looked more like the demographic that Mexican migrant farm workers are (indigenous mix? I'm trying to find the correct term but failing).
Also, I envisioned Peeta as vaguely Indian due to the name (think Deepak, so imagine my surprise when I saw the stills), and thus operated on the idea that a future post-uber-calamity society wouldn't have regions with current kinds of ethnic striations. And it's not like the South is majority black or that interracial marriages aren't become rapidly more common. Just because D12 is supposed to be future-Harlan County doesn't mean it should literally be Harlan County.
Sure to the latter, I just didn't see anything to indicate the former. To me it was pretty clear in the book, regardless, what is beyond clear is that Rue was defiantly not white so for those that are upset she was not, they just did not read properly.
Must have missed that part (was it in the first book? I haven't read the latter books, and I often find in a lot of these discussions that it's assumed that anyone who read the first book has read all three), because most of the time she referred to him through the bread story (I do remember Katniss' mother's hair being blond). Really, outside of the rare reference to skin tone (like Rue) I don't recall the book ever really specifying ethnic backgrounds. Also in the book they make mention of Peeta's blond hair so I don't see how you could think he is Indian.
That's an odd leap to make. The tributes having to play to the crowd and the voyeurism/sadism of the Capital were half the point of the story.Things like the sponsorship prizes seem to be included in order to make writing the scenario a lot more convenient for the author.[/B]
They were prepared for it, though. Hence all the cop dudes. And the adorable kid dying was business as usual, but a tribute showing compassion and respect for another district's dead was most definitely not. I don't remember if they showed it in the movie, but the Capital doesn't wear kiddy gloves when dealing with the uprising. It's a bloodbath, iirc.If you're going to subjugate a people through a battle to the death between their children...how is it that an adorable kid dying stirs a riot that the techno government is wholly unprepared for? That should be business as usual.
There was nothing magic about them, and they just looked like bigass, ugly dogs in the movie. I also don't remember seeing their entrances -- did they show them "materializing from the ether" or are you just referring to the shot in the gamemakers' room?Magic beardogs materializing from the ether are not set up appropriately by big televisions and maglev trains.
If only

Come to think of it, no one looked very "hungry".
Wes Bentley's beard was mesmerizing.
And will Donald Sutherland be around for all 3 movies? I hope so.
Hahaha. The technology-sensitive people ITT are going to be haaaatin'.
Are you really not getting the criticism? Nobody is sensitive about the technology. The direction of that scene is poor; it makes it seem like the dogs were created and materialize out of thin air. If that is how advanced they are, then the dependence/importance of the Districts seems unwarranted. But, they aren't that advanced, as in the books the beasts are released from underground tubes. We are criticizing the editing/direction. Do you have some book-based defense for the shaky-cam, too?

I am re reading it now and that is only really true for the first third while she tries to reconcile what her life is now. After that, the bigger theme about the capital is the center.
Haven't read the book, and I thought the movie was terrible. It started off well, but it fell so hard once the games began. Also, the camera work was fucking annoying. Couldn't make out shit during the action scenes. Or just about any scene.
becausekatniss showed the audience that you don't have play this as straight blood sport and that she celebrate her death/life. with the flowers and salute.

Also was I the only one pissed off about how atrocious the touch panel UI looked in the control room? They should have just ripped it off from Avatar, y'know, something that actually made sense and didn't depict millions of graphics on a desk for the sake of it.
Oh and I went to the new imax in my city (added to an existing cineplex) and it was super disappointing. The screen wasn't that much bigger than the regular ones, audio was better though. PQ was just a tad better but not 16 dollars worth.
That was a liemax screen
I'm looking forward to Catching Fire just for more Effie.

Who was Effie?
Now that I think about it, did they ever mention her name (Effie) in the movie?

How preposterous. Like damaging a mahogany table. Not that I can remember....
Needs more Caesar Flickman.
He was exactly how I imagined him.
Same haha, my friend couldn't stop laughing at me when I asked him why Katniss had an accent when pronouncing his name.I couldn't figure out why people were pronouncing Peter's name so oddly... until recently when I read his real name.
Anyone else had a sinking feeling in their chest seeingthe four or five kids working together. It was sad to think that, no matter how successful they would be at culling the rest of the contestants... their alliance would be pointless in the long run, since only one person can live in the end. I really liked it because I kept waiting for someone in the group to slash someone else's throat in their sleep. It made me tense whenever they were on screen with each other. They ended up going down one by one before they could ever turn on each other though. But still, I just thought it was pretty damn sad the way they would be laughing with each other, and the way the blonde would sleep with the alpha male - a meaningless friendship.
EW ponders casting possibilities for Finnick in Catching Fire.
Many of the names listed I have seen come up before, and all but Chris Hemsworth would be bad, bad, bad. But, I never thought of their idea of Ryan Kwanten as Finnick. It is so out of nowhere it makes perfect sense.
Was just thinking about this.
They have to nail this casting. I thought the actors portraying both Gale and Peeta were bad.
Peeta I imagined a bit taller and bulky. Also handsome.
The guy playing Peeta is Thor's little brother?
Gale is Thor's younger brother.

It's gonna be so good.
Yeah, Ryan Kwanten could work as Finnick.EW ponders casting possibilities for Finnick in Catching Fire.

Prepare to hate him more.I think they did good with Peeta, I never pictured him being overly handsome. Gale almost seemed like overkill. Although man did I hate dude-bro main career guy, great casting, even I wanted to kill him.
