The difference between a lot f the earlier artists that you mention here and some of the newer artists today is that even when there was violence and anger in their music there was still an underlying message that was meant to educate people about the strife of their experiences. What is Luda trying to educate me about exactly? About how rich he is and how much stuff he's got and how many women can't wait to get their hands on him to get to these things?

You simply can't make it as a Hip Hop artist these days unless your selling something, be it sex, violence, drugs or fine upscale mechandise (Jay-Z must have stacks of catalogs with him when he heads to the studio, seriously). This isn't a coincidence, at least not to me.

That's true - Public Enemy is an example of the former - it had a purpose other than to sell records. Now it's completely self-centered.

Incorrect. My point was to counter a claim that someone else made.

I have no opinion on whether Trayvon Martin dseerved to die because I wasn't there to see what happened, and not enough evidence has come out (to me, anyway) to make a solid judgment.

I will say I am glad that the case was re-opened, though.

Black crime statistic have nothing to do with what Kame-sennin said.

I see no other reason to use these other than to devalue the lives of Black people..

I did? That's news to me.

It's funny - when one guy throws up a bunch of assertions without any data or evidence, it's fine. When I counter those assertions with evidence, I'm a racist.

I guess some assertions aren't open for debate.

Honestly, you're just full of shit. I wouldn't even bother to call you racist since that would shift the focus off you being full of shit and give you a something to hide behind, namely the victim card.

Was it the States attorney's office that told cops not to take Zimmerman's clothes into evidence after someone got shot and killed? And why didn't cops document Zimmermans injuries at the scene? Cops took his word for it that it was self-defense. If there were any doubt, they would have collected evidence.
This. Cops brought in a shitty case and the state's attorney basically said "I can't fap to this."

Your assertions are flimsy at best. Heck calling them flimsy is probably a compliment.

The lives of African Americans have multiple factors that lead directly to crime rates. The bias in the judicial system, poverty, lifestyle, education all have more direct impact on the black youth than music. Your 'evidence' is actually more appropriate for evidence AGAINST your case. It gives many a perception of the black man as 'gangsta' to many without any nuance to the character. It paints an ugly image of the black man as violent, looking for trouble, and having a proclivity for criminal behavior and it is this perception that got poor Mr. Martin shot. Good day sir.

it's clear you have an axe to grind and were just waiting for the opportunity to spew your off topic polemic, which is why you cherry picked that one guy's posts and leapt at the opening it gave you. you know full well what you're doing, drop your wide-eyed innocent act, please.

What? He didnt deserve to die. I think that's pretty clear.

So... somebody dug up Trayvon's tweets from the past couple months....

So I went through them and learned some things about him:

1. He likes weed. (His suspension confirms this)
2. He likes Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, possibly other hip hop artists.
3. He likes sex.
4. He has friends.

Are we talking about the same kid?

I didn't mean to distract the thread from the real issues at hand, being the senseless murder of a 17 year-old boy, but thanks posting this.

no problem man, it's definitely an interesting topic. One deserving its own thread even.

If you saw my follow-up post to Empty Vessel, you would realize that I brought up quite a few of the same things. And you are right about bias in the judicial system as well - the crack vs cocaine sentencing being an egregious example.

But a biased judicial system doesn't pull triggers or glorify violence.

I'm not sure what got Trayvon Martin shot. Certainly, the shooter didn't take steps to avoid the conflict, and the reason behind that could be racism (or it could not), but the shooting could still have been justified in the end if, in fact, he was attacked unprovoked to the point where his life was in danger. I don't know if that was the case or not, and as I said, I'm glad the case is open (again, the fact that it was closed so quickly could be a racist thing - or it could not).

I also pointed out that fear and suspicion can be founded in factors other than conscious racism. When you are conditioned by seeing gangsta rappers and the like present themselves to the world as criminals, you are more likely to react to someone with the same appearance - skin color, dress, speech patterns, etc. - the same way you would to those "gangstas" from pop culture.

I don't really care much about rap, but the assertion that "gangsta rap" created the stereotype of the black male criminal is nonsense. This is a scene from Birth of a Nation, a film released in 1915. In this scene, a dangerous looking black man (played by a white actor in black face) lecherously chases a white woman:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSBLcKa85rk#t=1m55s

We've been showing footage of dangerous black men for as long as we've had motion pictures.

Oh, agreed, absolutely. But motion pictures aren't what's perpetuating it now.

that represents like...half of GAF. lol

It's like you're ...you can't enjoy any of those things and still be a stand up person? (Edit: Or a teenager ^)

Nevermind how irrelevant this entire subtopic is.

No, I'm just pointing out how dishonest the media has been in portraying Trayvon (who, I'm inclined to believe did not deserve to be shot - seems like I'm the only GAFer who didn't witness it in person) as a 12-14 year old kid wearing Hollister. Was he not 17?

Does nobody find it weird?

What? He didnt deserve to die. I think that's pretty clear.

Can't you see? The case is too ambiguous as to who committed the crime.

On the one hand you have Zimmerman following a minor and confronting him with a gun.

On the other hand you have a professional HS football linebacker, wearing a gang banger hoodie, illegally possessing Skittles and carrying a black market, modified Ice Tea can without any papers.

It's just not clear what went down....

I doubt many here would find it weird. Also, what was his twitter name/handle again?

A person's likes or dislikes have nothing to do with anything.

I bet if he liked the Smiths people would be saying he was a depressing fuck who probably would of killed himself anyway...

Question: I know the consensus is that he looks young in the circulated photos, but have we established exactly how old he is in them?

Remove #2 and put an asterisk on #1(cause I haven't smoked for years)..

That's basically me...

Must turn myself in...

Been watching some gender talks between that and this I forget just how blind the privileged are.

i agree with a lot of what you have to say, but boy do you have a shitty way of saying it sometimes. if you're an undergrad/grad student in the middle of a soc program of some sort, i'll understand though.

Hahaha. Oh wow, please keep on parroting this line.
Obviously the guy who has 100 lbs more and carrying the gun was always in danger from the get-go (or it could not according to you). And of course according to you he was justified (or not justified) in shooting the unarmed kid.

My god, what a passive aggressive bigot thinking.

People still make gangster rap? I thought all modern rap was about getting drunk in the club and falling in love with strippers?

So, at worst, various media are drumming up sympathy for Martin by showing his younger and more innocent looking pictures. Does this bother me? Not really. Trayvon is dead. If those pictures helped garner this case the attention it needed to prevent the SPD and State Attorney's office from sweeping it under the rug, great.

Trayvon-Martin1.jpg

My youngest brother lives in Orlando and reminds me so much of this kid (probably why this story hurts me so much). He's 22 now but probably weighs about 130 pounds and looks like he's 16 or 17 tops.

...And he was doing everything Trayvon is alleged to have been doing, from the weed on up, from an early age (13 I think). He's still the sweetest and most innocent looking 22 year old you would ever see though and wouldn't hurt a fly if his life depended on it.

There was never a need for Trayvon to have been depicted as perfect in the media before this predictable smear campaign started. Few kids are perfect, you're supposed to make your mistakes when you're young afterall, but I haven't read anything even in the lies that have been posted that would make him anything other than average youth in today's society.

That's why so many people have been touched by this story. Trayvon seemed like any kid you may know now and who wants to deal with the reality that something like this could happen to someone you know and their killer could still be walking around a free man?

So this justifies him getting shot?

No. I was just posting stuff my interpretation of what I saw (and to any reasonable person, those are just things that teenagers do).

(I gotta look at most posts more before I make them lol)

No it's just the discussion that's been happening in this thread is a wonder to behold at times.

that's radio rap.

"street rap" is stuff like Young Jeezy and Rick Ross, who spin some of the most entertaining yarns about being coke salesmen.

What I don't understand is WHY its such an offense. Its their son! They're showing his interest. They're showing he was wide eyed and happy. They are showing their baby. How awful...obviously race baiting.

I have no idea whether Martin could possibly kick Zimmerman's ass. It seems theoretically possible given that Martin was 6'2" and Zimmerman looks like those extra 100lbs are pure fat, and given that a witness supposedly saw Zimmerman getting his ass kicked. I have no idea if the witness saw correctly or is credible, or even if their statement is being reported correctly by the media, but I'm willing to allow for the possibility that Zimmerman was getting beat to the point where he though he would die if he didn't shoot. It doesn't mean that I think it's likely that it was justified, only possible. And I'm willing to wait until the investigation takes its course to make my own judgment.

As for being a bigot/racist (that's what you mean, right? that I'm racist?), knock it off. You don't know me, and if you think my posts are racist, you simply don't understand what I am trying to say. That's not my problem.
