Five is an important number for Samsung's Galaxy Note. It has a 5.3-inch screen and now, just five months since it debuted Samsung has announced it's shipped five million units (the one million mark was crossed right around the end of December). That's certainly long enough for you to decide if you're in love with its super-sized frame or the accompanying S-Pen stylus, but unfortunately it has not been quite enough time for the highly-anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich software update to be released. While the world waits for the Premium Suite of apps and Android 4.0, let's think back to all the good times we had, including its initial unveiling, our original review and finally its arrival in the US on AT&T. So, are you convinced yet that there's a place in the world for a device like this, or five million phablets later are you still thinking this is just a fad?

Remember when people were questioning the viability of screens larger than 4" or so? Yep, people like bigass phones.

I wonder how the industry views this and how it will affect future phone designs (if at all). Either way, congrats, Samsung!

5 mill shipped in 5 months isn't bad, certainly there's a decent market for it, if not a massive one.

And really, with what the iPad does, what the Fire is doing, and the possibility of a big Windows 8 push in the future, this 'niche' may be the best bet for Android tablets.

Regardless, selling 5 million Notes is a respectable accomplish for Samsung. I don't want one, but its good to see some other part of the market finally getting some footing.

Is the size of a phone's screen really a matter of intense debate?

I don't get what this thread is about.

Calling it now, 1/4 ipad screen to be used in the next iphone, 4.85 inches, 1024x768, can use the same LCD panels for economies of scale, 4:3 aspect ratio and everything.

So how may did it sell in 5 months?

The 4S did 37 million over the holiday period. But 5 million for a niche Android device is pretty damn high.

For comparison, the GS2, which the Note is just a supersized version of, had sold about 20 million within a year of launch. It's very, very stupid to compare the Note to an iPhone's sales though since people literally have one option every year for a new iOS phone while there's dozens of different Android devices. I don't think anybody would have thought that a 5 inch phone could sell this well though no matter what operating system it had.

Funny this thread should come up, I was admiring the note in a store today. It's versatile and the big screen is not only gorgeous but also much easier to use. My iphone 4 looked SO small beside it.

I'm tempted actually I'm due a hardware upgrade... The size though is also a problem as I doubt it would fit comfortably in my pocket.

If anything the note reminds me of my playbook.

Why do people feel the need to post what apple sells in this thread?

Because posting the sales of anything that competes with Apple even indirectly requires defending Apple's honor. Apple doesn't even have a comparable product, but we're apparently going to act like both iPhone and iPad are the same thing just so we can talk about Apple.

Well compared to the last phone/ Tablet hybrid (Dell Streak 5) this is a smash success. I'm sort of surprised it only has Gingerbread though.
