Sanford police chief, state attorney made Zimmerman 'no charge' call in person

A source with knowledge of the investigation into the shooting of Trayvon Martin tells theGrio that it was then Sanford police chief Bill Lee, along with Capt. Robert O'Connor, the investigations supervisor, who made the decision to release George Zimmerman on the night of February 26th, after consulting with State Attorney Norman Wolfinger -- in person.

Wolfinger's presence at the scene or at the police department in the night of a shooting would be unusual, according to the source. On a typical case, police contact the state attorney's office and speak with an on duty assistant state attorney; they either discuss the matter by phone or the on duty assistant state attorney comes to the crime scene - but rarely the state attorney him or herself.

A spokesman for the Sanford police department confirmed that Lee and O'Connor went to the shooting scene that night. Sgt. Dave Morgenstern said that is typical for a homicide case, particularly in for someone like O'Connor, who was hired by Lee last year to oversee all criminal investigations for the department.

ABC News reported Tuesday that, after questioning Zimmerman at the Sanford police station, homicide investigator Chris Serino filed an affidavit February 26th stating that he did not believe Zimmerman's account of the shooting. He recommended charging the 28-year-old with manslaughter, but was advised by Wolfinger's office that there wasn't enough evidence to secure a conviction. Zimmerman was subsequently released.

What was not stated was that, on the night of the killing, Wolfinger may have traveled to either the scene of the shooting or the police station to discuss the case with Lee and O'Connor, who was briefly named interim "co-chief" with the current acting chief, Darren Scott, when Lee announced he would step down temporarily last week.

In this case, the source says investigators spoke to the on-duty assistant state attorney -- an unidentified woman -- who did not come to the scene, but that Wolfinger did.

And according to the source, after a conversation between Lee, O'Connor and Wolfinger, the decision was made to "cut Zimmerman loose."

Sanford police initially turned the case over to Wolfinger's office more than a week ago, and at no time did Wolfinger indicate he had already reviewed it. Lee has stood by the investigation, saying that officers lacked sufficient evidence to arrest Zimmerman.

Wolfinger recused himself from the case last week, stating in a letter to Florida Governor Rick Scott that he was requesting the case be reassigned "to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest." Florida Gov. Rick Scott and state attorney general Pam Bondi appointed Duval County state attorney Angela Corey to act as a special prosecutor in the case.

Go figure. I said way back that Wolfinger's involvement in this case was suspect given his past actions in the Collison incident.

Edit:
Trayvon's phone logs, also obtained exclusively by ABC News, show the conversation occurred five minutes before police first arrived on the scene.

So how could all the things Zimmerman is claiming have happened happen when Trayvon was actually on the phone a few moments before his death?

News to me. Strange that Wolfinger made that call...
Have Treyvons calls to his girlfriend and to 911 been verified?

I can’t believe people have found a way to argue about this… I don’t get it.
ABC News was there exclusively as the 16-year-old girl told Crump about the last moments of the teenager's life. Martin had been talking to his girlfriend all the way to the store where he bought Skittles and a tea. The phone was in his pocket and the earphone in his ear, Crump said.

"He said this man was watching him, so he put his hoodie on. He said he lost the man," Martin's friend said. "I asked Trayvon to run, and he said he was going to walk fast. I told him to run, but he said he was not going to run."

Eventually, he would run, said the girl, thinking that he'd managed to escape. But suddenly the strange man was back, cornering Martin.

"Trayvon said, 'What are you following me for,' and the man said, 'What are you doing here.' Next thing I hear is somebody pushing, and somebody pushed Trayvon because the head set just fell. I called him again, and he didn't answer the phone."

The line went dead. Besides screams heard on 911 calls that night as Martin and Zimmerman scuffled, those were the last words he said.

Holy shit, this case keeps on going fucking dirty and dirtier - seems like it's all the high-ups playing dirty politics so far that's causing this thing to go overdrive.

Had the Sanford PD just followed the investigation from the homicide investigator, this thing would've been done and over.

Yep. Very informative post back then, and it's even more relevant now. Good call.

As for the second question, that is certainly interesting. I wonder what happened to Trayvon's phone. Was it broken? Where was it found?

Crump said the girl's identity was being withheld because "her parents are gravely concerned about her health and her safety." Her parents asked that only an attorney be allowed to ask her questions.

Your only taking pieces from one side though. When the other side has numerous more pieces that paint a different description

If you re-read what I said I never once proclaim one side to be the final arbiter of the truth. I simply said it was interesting reading that officer's notes, and the details of what he observed with Zimmerman immediately following the shooting.

White Supremacist Hacks Trayvon Martin’s Email Account, Leaks Messages Online

The racist smear campaign against Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black teen shot to death last month in Florida, has reached a new level of ghoulishness. A white supremacist hacker says he's broken into Martin's email and social networking accounts, and leaked his private Facebook messages. We've been able to confirm that at least one email account that belonged to Martin was cracked.

The hacker, who goes by the name Klanklannon, posted what he said were Martin's private Facebook messages to the politics section (NSFW) of the anarchic message board 4chan—called "/pol/"—Tuesday afternoon at around noon. The messages were posted on four slides, strategically arranged to back up the insane racist argument that Trayvon was a Scary Black Teenager and so somehow deserved to be killed by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman that night.

A slide titled "Trayvon Martin Used Marijuana Habitually," features an exchange between Trayvon and a friend about getting high. Another slide, "Trayvon Martin was a Drug Dealer," features Facebook messages and photos that supposedly prove Martin dealt drugs, including a picture of Martin posing "aggressively with a large amount of cash in his hand." It's impossible to verify the hacked messages' authenticity—like other anti-Trayvon Martin propaganda, they're probably a mix of real and fake content— but they are now being passed around the racist underbelly of the internet, on message boards like the neo-Nazi hive Stormfront, which Klanklannon apparently frequents, as gospel.

In addition to the Facebook messages, Klanklannon posted a list of usernames and passwords for Martin's social media and email accounts as proof of his exploits. All of the passwords had been changed to racist slurs. (Gmail: "niggerniggernigger" Twitter: "coontrayvonnigger")

On 4chan, Klanklannon made clear their intention to smear Trayvon. Klanklannon introduces the post with, "Today /pol/, tomorrow CNN." One 4chan user told us Klanklannon had been attempting to break into Martin's accounts for days, posting periodic updates to the board.

"Where did all the liberals go?," Klanklannon taunted after posting his slides. "Did they run off because they can't handle the facts?"

But Klanklannon included none of Martin's emails in his leak, because the picture they paint is of a normal high school junior preparing for college. A screenshot of Trayvon's Gmail inbox our source provided us is heartbreaking. Martin apparently used his Gmail account for his college search, and it's filled with emails about upcoming SAT tests and scholarship applications. ("Trayvon, now is the best time to take the SATs!") One email included the results of a career aptitude test, our source said. It "talked about his interest in aeronautics and stuff."

I was in a class today and somehow this came up. The first thing multiple people said was that they couldn't see how people actually believed that Zimmerman didn't do it in self defense.

Mind fucking blown.

This is just getting sad.

And sad to say predictable. The minute this story took national attention I knew this kind of crap would show up. Anyone with an agenda that thinks they can exploit this case will do it if they think they can get away with it or move their agenda forward. Most keep a humble distance but it only takes one ass to really stir the pot. I would like to think 98% of the country will be repulsed by this, but seeing how the 'fake' Trayvon Martin photo keeps popping up, I don't have faith the certain 'news' blogs will shy away from it.

Agreed, I'm sickened by both sides, one for the smearing, the other for the martyrdom.

I won't even bring this case up with my own family (my older bro especially) because I don't want someone to say some stupid ass shit that would just cause an argument.

I am always amazed at the callousness and mean-spirited nature of people; there seems to be some sort of bizarre societal mechanism that will make many automatically blame the victim. I don't really know what it is but I've seen it way too much.

Again. This is so much bigger than Treyvon now. Just look at how the right is in a frenzy (and the left).

I hope they go after the hackers. That's messed up.

edit: That's to say that it has ballooned into something crazy.

since when?

Blacks have been demonized as pot smoking drug dealers, when in reality they do not do either as much as whites.

The report found that from 2006 to 2008, California African-Americans and Latinos were up to 12 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than whites. In Los Angeles County, for instance, where blacks account for only 10 percent of the population, they accounted for 30 percent of those arrested for pot possession.

And statistics compiled from 2004 through 2007 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services show that for both children and adults, whites report using marijuana at higher levels than either African-Americans or Hispanics.

Maybe this will be a wake up call to any non-racist victim blamers, seeing what kind of company they're keeping.

Nah, who am I kidding.
