Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Wii 2 might be a better name. Maybe Super Wii. Wii U still doesn't sound terribly right. Maybe we're the wrong audience to ask. Personally, I'd hope that Wii U would grow on my like some sort of horrible fungus, but it hasn't yet.

I still wish I could see a return to the NES naming from the 1980s. But with the Wii branding being so strong, I doubt it at this point..

It was a brand marketable name.

The big problem with Wii U is brand confusion, which can be solved with marketing but should not have to be when Wii 2 works just as well.

My memory might be failing me, but Emily Rogers is not a name well regarded here. Might even be stuff of ban.

I'm really not sure, though. She just says stuff out of her ass.

The only problem with Wii 2 is it will lead to comments that the "Wii 2 is 2 gens behind the PS4"

I didn't think about it that way, but I do think that some people will underestimate the jump in hardware between the Wii and Wii 2.

Other than that, I think it just sounds cheap. I guess it works for Sony because they've only ever had the playstation brand.

How about Wii 4 U

It makes it clearer what the U means
It competes with the names of other consoles of that gen

Any negatives?

I seriously hope they change the name to something less weird or more mainstream.
In my language it sounds stupid and kiddy =/
"U" works fine, but "Wii U"? LOL

Fun. Following the flow I'm re-watching the Iwata 2005 GDC Keynote and noticed at 12mn how he used Sakurai "Challenge & Redward" idea/concept, something Iwata acknowleged as a main influence on him in the KI Iwata Ask. He really is a gamer/developer/president as he like to present himself. With Iwata Ask he can even now add "game journalist" on his card. And what a f... keynote. Can't wait to watch his show next E3.

I don't get why "Wii U" sounds bad.

People said that about "Wii" and as you let the name sit, it didn't seem silly anymore.

I see no difference with this name.

A name like "Revolution" would be ok but Nintendo's systems are always interesting and they need a more philosophical name.

Or at least they do now.

No.
When we break out the photoshop, then we're bored.

If they do end up changing the name I vote for 'Nintendo U'. Simple and classy. Either that, or just stick with Wii U.

I miss the old NES/SNES style so my wish has always been for UNES:Ultimate Nintendo Entertainment System. That way Nintendo can keep the U, go back to their roots with the NES, and ditch the Wii which has a bad stigma with the 360/PS3 only crowd that Nintendo would like to bring back to their side, I don't think kids care if a console has Wii or Nintendo in the name so you might as well cater to the crowd that's petty and would be swayed just by the name.
