The Hunger Games (Dir. Gary Ross) |OT| May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor

Having watched the movie last week and now start the series(book 3 now). I think one thing that perhaps gave me the wrong impression like many on here got(or maybe it was just me) was that Katniss was a favorite among the tributes. The impression I got painted was that she was actually fairly equipped to deal with outdoor situations and had better odds than most of the other tributes in terms of survival. On top of that after her dress and bow in the apple display you don't get the sense that she is still seen as an underdog from a poor district.

Just my opinion that the book kind of paints a slightly different pictures than the movies but I could see how the movie might struggle of expressing certain complex things for the audience to understand while also remaining subtle about it since in the books you can hear Katniss' internal thoughts while in the movie you can't.

I know, but Katniss/Gale/Peeta are supposed to be 16-18 and are played by actors aged 19-22. I'm just saying, get an older looking actor instead of a 22-25 year old one. Late 20s or early 30s is all I'm asking.

edit: Someone like Dustin Clare would be perfect for the role I think. He was terrific in Spartacus.

Wasn't thinking Gannicus at all for the part, but that's an awesome idea!

i'm trying to place the time the series takes place.

75 years + rebellion wars
then some amount of time between the rebellion wars and the unification of panem under the capitol
then some amount of time between the unification of panem under the capitol and the chaos following the nuclear war
then some amount of time between now and the nuclear war

considering they still call the place 'north america' and everyone still speaks english (and the capitol people speak with a british accent), i'm guessing it hasn't been over 500 years or anything. maybe 200, or 300 years in our future... max.

so why does no one have the name thomas or william or anything else from our time? 300 years ago we had people named thomas and william. wouldn't the capitol people, especially the ones not in charge (like say, your tv personalities), not all revert to using naming conventions common in the roman empire?

Dude.

Katniss losses her ear, and half her face is blown off from the mines. The cut on her head from the knife is gushing blood, Peeta losses his leg at the very end and some other stuff.

She doesn't
lose half her face. Just her eardrum is blown out and her ear bleeds. Minor nit, but it wasn't that gruesome for her.

Wonder who they are going to cast for him... Hope it isn't some teen heartthrob. Should be an older dude for sure.

I had always pictured Finnick to look like a slightly younger version of this.

Oh my, 20 pages in I understood way more things than the movie in a hour.

It's sad to see the audience is kinda expected to have read the book before watching the movie.

So, the movie got neutered for a PG13 rating?

Since I actually liked the concept of the story, maybe I should try the books.

she wins if not for stupid monologue.

She slits Katniss' throat, Peeta dies due to lack of medicine, Clove and Cato clean up the rest, and Clove uses those crazy knife skills and quickness to keep Cato at a distance. :p

He's 24 or 25. 10 years after he won his Games.
That's what I thought.

Well, Kat & Peeta will be about 17 or 18 for Catching Fire & Finnick is supposed to stuill look young. I imagine that they are going to try and get the demographics as close as possible in order to have teen heartthrob material. Finnick will fit that desription.

i'm cool with the poor people in the districts doing it because that's their worth to society or whatever, but the complete lack of names we currently have seemed weird.
I think the names have evolved from current names- Peeta is Peter for example. Religion doesn't play a huge role anymore so giving kids Christian names doesn't really make sense (It would not surprise me at all if the first thing shut down AFTER an apocalyptic event is religion). The otherwise normal rule of naming after description seems fit (The Capital citizens are still just descendants of survivors too and are more individualistic.)

The last names are more troubling except that they may be adopted names. There may be no more family trees to concern onesself with and I learned in the hunger game racist thread that the multicultural make-up is quite a bit different due to it actually be a sci-fi setting instead of an actual American one.

FINNICK. I think he'll pull it off. I saw him when I was reading this.

It was actually surprisingly enjoyable.

Shaky cam was awful and more violence would be nice but still very good. Definitely got better as it went along. The whole premise is silly but it's cool.

That'd be my guess too, actually. She's freaking menacing.

Yes! He's made for the role.

They have British accents? I read the first book the other day and it said nothing of the sort. I think you're seeing what you want to see.

Pretty early in the book They mock Effie's Capitol accent, Katniss refers to it as "affected". I guess that could mean a few things but it makes me think British. That is to say what an American might do to mock a snooty person. The Capitol manor of speech is also described as having "the ends of their sentences go up as if they're asking a question". Which is something I've noticed in some Australians. They are also high pitched have "odd vowels, clipped words, and always a hiss on the letter s". That sounds kind of valley girlish.

So yea, probably a case of whatever your perception is.

No idea but hopefully it'll be more brutal.

I loved the first few minutes of the fight with the muffled sound. Felt very tense and the movie could use a lot more of that. Add in more blood and you're on to a winner.

Just started the second book (skipped the first since I saw the movie) and so far it's pretty interesting.

are the retarded muttation/tributes in the movie? that alone nearly ruined the book for me...

Do do that. Go back and read the first before you continue with the second. I mean I guess you could continue, but there were enough differences between the first book and the movie that you might get not fully understand a few things here and there.

As for a new director, I don't know to be honest.

Finished the first book. Overall I prefered it to the movie, as it lingers more on various plot points, it explains more things. The characters are more nuanced, it's not as manichean as in the movie. There are a couple of things that irked me :
Ok so they have awesome aircrafts that obviously an airstrip but rather a heliport : why do they take the bullet train then ? Plus, train isn't that interesting logistically speaking as the railroads can be sabotaged.
Ok so how did Tresh knew of the Katniss/Rue alliance in the movie ? It didn't strike me on the moment, but now...
The dogs muttations are ex-participants from the current session = lolwhat.
Katniss didn't give the coup de grâce to Cato immediatly, but after he's suffered for several hours. Interesting, and more believable than the movie, where she perfectly head-shotted him amongst the dogs. EDIT : Actually scratch that, he didn't wear any armor in the movie.
Katniss is more of a bitch in the books than the movie, lol.
Poor Peeta...that's what you get for being named after some kind of bread (delicious bread, but that's not the point).
The technologically-superior Capitol obviously has the means to put down rebellions / manipulate the people in the Districs. Hell, the districts don't even communicate between themselves, I don't see what they're so afraid of, apart from killing everyone in a district and thus depriving themselves of useful resources and products...but really, how is it plausible ?.
So...errr...Panam isn't only the Capitol and the 12 districts but there is more to it ? I can't wait to see what contrived reason there is for not having other countries / other countries intervening.
I still think that the "Only one survivor" rule is stupid. The author should've either made the Hunger Games pick only one person per district or make the "Only one couple wins".

Well, I hope the following books will answer my questions/precise some things

Condon would be a nice pick actually. I haven't seen his Twilight movie, but Dreamgirls was staged great and he can handle the balancng act between action and drama.

Aronofsky needs to do Mockingjay lol.

but it NEEDS to be PG-13, they cant make it any more brutal

Pretty sure they could have gotten away with some more violence in the first.

While I'm sure that there are PG-13 movies that were more violent than the Hunger Games, those were R rated movies that were trimmed down just enough to get the PG-13 rating. Liongates is strickly aiming for a PG-13 rating so they're not even going to try and push the boundaries of what is acceptable for a PG-13 rating.

Why in the hell would Curaon waste his talent on this?

Seems like he is putting everything he has into Gravity. Could be a nice break. He already took over the otherwise terrible Harry Potter series and made the best one. And this franchise is already shaping up to be much better than that one.

One nitpick I had about the casting is that the career females were supposed to be taller and weigh heavier than Katniss. A Good 50 or so pounds by Katniss' own estimations.

Cuaron is above this trash.

Cuaron is above this trash.

Ah, this is a better avenue for my bitching. Agreed. So is Wright.

They should hire Andrew Niccol, who really needs a big money maker to get back on track right now so he can then go off an do more higher-budget interesting fair that hopefully isn't so safe/stupid.

Cuaron is above this trash.

Considering he is one of the best directors out there, he is above any sort of non-original material like is...like any great director.

They should get their 2nd unit director, before he "retires." It'd be funny if this was his last film, although it would never, ever happen.

I watched the movie today and enjoyed it. I don't remember the last time i teared up but Rue's scene pulled some heart strings. Have to go eat a steak or something to feel my manliness. I'm guessing the love stuff was just for show?

I'm interested in reading the books, though, the feedback regarding the ending to the third has me a bit on edge. Especially after ME 3's ending, I'm a bit hesitant in investing time into a series that might not have satisfying ending.

The ending is satisfying enough it's just not what some people wanted.

As far as the love stuff, book spoilers:
I haven't seen the movie but I'm led to understand based on other people that they didn't hype up the fact that Katniss was faking her feelings for Peeta in the arena. She did it to stay alive. In the book they go over this ad nauseum so it's quite surprising that such a big part wasn't integrated.

I really should go see this, this weekend.

just saw it yesterday after a friend of mine told me how good it was and how she immediately bought the books after watching it etc, I have to say, I didn't enjoy it as much as her. it's engaging enough but everything felt too neat and smooth, and I felt Katniss is so damn lucky to always get help the way she does.

I also though thought the survival premise will push these characters to the extreme, doing surprising thing to ensure survival etc but early on you pretty much get good look of who's supposed to be the bad guy and who's the good guy. it's only after I watched it that I try to wiki the books and found out it's a young adult novel, so I guess it make sense how some of the more crazy scenario or plot twist I can think of will never happened.

I think I'm gonna try to make my friend watch Battle Royale. I wonder what she thinks about that.

Read the 2nd and 3rd book if you want plot twists :lol.

Just finished reading the last book, sad to say that I think that book one was the best material for a movie. I trust the other movies won't suck, but I'm struggling to see how they will provide a better movie experience, even more so with there being three movies made of the final two books.

Wait and see I guess, but ideally they should shoot 3/4 back to back and make sure each film releases in November the next three years.

Will be interesting to see if any new book material comes out now that the movie as is big as it is.
