We usually don't learn anything from what happens at the Grand Jury panels outside of if an indictment happened or not. They are pretty closed procedures unlike normal Trials.

He also missed a few proven details. Like, Trayvon was not carrying or doing anything illegal. Trayvon did not have any sort of weapon, other than a bottle of iced tea (but I assume Zimmerman would have mentioned if Trayvon hit him with it). Zimmerman also stalked Trayvon in his car and on foot. Zimmerman was not wearing anything that identified him as a neighborhood watch guy. It was dark and rainy that night. Trayvon was a skinny 17 year old high school kid. Zimmerman had no authority to apprehend or detain Trayvon, unless he saw him comiting a felony, so what was his plan when he decided to follow him on foot? And probably some other things I can't remember right now. But I guess apart from all those details, All we have is conflicting witness reports and speculation. And by conflicting witness reports, it seems like there is only one conflicting witness report right now.....

Yes and no, I think. Obviously, the State has a constitutional obligation to presume that a citizen is innocent until convicted by a jury after a trial in which due process has been afforded. But I think that is a principle that ideally is supposed to be embraced by all of society, which, after all, is who the government represents. So we should presume Zimmerman innocent. It doesn't mean we can't talk about the political implications of the case or even express desires that he be charged with a crime and tried (neither of which require an assumption of guilt). But I do think he should be presumed innocent until the State proves him otherwise, even by us in a forum like this.

John Derbyshire fired for article urging children to avoid African Americans

A leading US conservative magazine, the National Review, has fired a prominent contributor over an online column advising his children to protect themselves by avoiding African Americans, to closely scrutinise black politicians and to accept that white people are more intelligent.

Derbyshire's column appeared in another publication, Taki's Magazine, run by the rightwing Greek socialite Taki Theodoracopulos, who has himself faced accusations of racism and is a self-confessed antisemite.

Although the National Review had no editorial responsibility for Derbyshire's article, it said he was so closely associated with the magazine that his "outlandish, nasty and indefensible" writing was in effect a letter of resignation.

Derbyshire, who has previously described himself as a racist and homophobe, wrote the column in the form of "advice" to his teenage children on how to stay safe when around African Americans.

Among other things he says they should "stay out of heavily black neighborhoods" and "not attend events likely to draw a lot of blacks".

"If planning a trip to a beach or amusement park at some date, find out whether it is likely to be swamped with blacks," Derbyshire wrote. "If you are at some public event at which the number of blacks suddenly swells, leave as quickly as possible."

He also says not to live in an area run by African American politicians and to scrutinise black politicians more closely than white ones.

Derbyshire goes on to write that "the mean intelligence of blacks is much lower than for whites". He says that many black people only have "cognitively demanding jobs" because of affirmative action.
