Guild Wars 2 Press Beta [Prepurchase Is Live]

if i remember correctly once SWTOR got its ESRB rating, it got its release date announcement shortly after. so here is to wishing for good news soon :-D

You're the total opposite of kayos, taking extreme optimism at every corner. :P

The thing is, according to O'Brien, there simply isn't a release date yet. There release date is entirely based on the feedback they get during their BWEs. If it went really, really well and only required a month of optimization, then we could get the game in May. It all comes down to the BWEs.

lol you could say that...i like to stay positive and see everything in a glass is half full kind of way. it keeps me from being angry at the world all the time lol. there might not be a set date but im sure there is at least a window that they are targeting, if not they wouldnt be in super crunch mode right now and they would probably be at PAX right now showin off their game but they are not which leads me to believe it might come out sooner than later. as far as the 2 unplayable races go, its probably not that they are not done, its probably like was said before, they dont want to throw everything out in the beta all at once. so maybe we wont get a release date announcement on the 10th like we previously thought. but now that we have an ESRB rating, an announcement is not too far out.

I'm not being pessimistic. This is from what I understand how the industry works and how games go about being released and me being grounded in reality. Going gold and launch is roughly 2 months to 1 month. Having said that, there is still a lot of work ANet needs to do from managing content and optimizing and that'll take 1 month minimum. Even under best case scenario, the game will take at least 2 months and that'll be June. What'll most likely happen is that the game will gold 1 1/2 month before launch. Additionally the game will be in beta/development for another good 3 months. If you take all of this into consideration then it'll be at least 5-6 months until the game comes out since after beta they'll go back and code/program/fix. So from the pre-launch date until then it'll be October or November.

ESRB rating doesn't mean anything.

im just goin off what has previously been done....usually games get their ESRB rating before they announce a release date.

This is the most case for other games. Before bugs and other stuff has been ironed out, ESRB rates the game, since it's essentially the final product. That's not really how it works for MMOs.

not always no...but like my previous example SWTOR got its ESRB rating and a few weeks later got its release date announcement at a game convention. this was also after months of bioware saying that they would never announce their release date at a convention. so companies arent always full of truth and sprinkles and candy canes....they may say one thing and completely do another just to keep the speculating and rumors to a minimum. i believe this is what anet is doing as well...they are making it seem like its still got a long way to go but honestly i dont seeing it going into november like you stated. im guessing july...august at the very latest.

SWTOR was basically done at that point. It just had a lot of problems period.

ESRB rating means something actually. Not so much a release date soon, but it will not be a November type release. You can try saving your gems all you want kayos but it will not save you on this one.

true but from all the videos we've seen and from alot of the press that played it have said...it looks like its pretty much done by now. i know you also got a chance to play and actually said they are far from done and while i havent played it yet i cant say much on it. but the overall feeling from most of the other press is that the next few beta weekends will just be getting the last of the bugs they can find and stress test. theres no reason why that would go to the end of the year.

I hardly believe that this public beta is just for what you stated. There is a lot of stuff going on that they need to fix, polish, and change. The game isn't done and I stand by it.

I'm not trying to save gems. I'd gladly give up my gems if I'm wrong. It's not really a matter of gems rather, trying to discuss why people believe a certain release month.

I was kidding about the gems but there is just no way it'll release past September at the latest and even that's a stretch. The fact that they are taking $60-$80 of people's dollars straight up and keeping it for that long of a period is one thing. Having that many pre-purchase periods from April to September is another. That is way to long a time to not give people the game. Summer is when this game will launch. Past that and they lose more than they gain.

i agree with you on this sir but like i also stated earlier...they are in full super crunch mode and passed on attending PAX and who knows what else they might miss just to fix, and polish their game to get it out to us. how could this possibly take them to the end of the year then? i was also on the june 26th bandwagon along with the rest of you guys a few days ago which obviously doesnt seem likely anymore. but now i also dont see this releasing past late august/early september at the very latest truthfully.

this argument has now lost all new insights. rofl. it's pretty much over since we made it clear to each other what our standings are and why. Just saying. Any more and it's sort of pointless.

lol just a healthy mature debate :-)....go try and have one of those on guru or reddit and see if doesnt turn into an all out flame war in 5 mins lol

Argument means differently in rhetoric, hence why I used the word. Having said that, yes this was enjoyable. I hate arguing with people on reddit, gamefaqs, and whatnot. Ugh, horrible experiences where people just don't understand the art behind it.

Hoping I get in the beta without prepurchasing. I want this game a little more each day. Something about not wanting to avoid other players in the game world when I'm just relaxing doing some questing (or events in this game's case) seems revolutionary, even though it's such a small change. In a game like WoW I actively avoid other people when I want to relax, don't have to in this game.

I think they'll be handing out quite a few beta keys this round of testing. So here's to hoping you're lucky enough!

I pre-purchased the game on Amazon 3yrs ago. I wonder if I qualify for the beta. LOL

I waited in hopes that it would come to Steam. Even though it's not, I'm guessing I made the right choice on this one. I'd be pretty upset if I bought it a while ago and didn't get any of the prepurchase bonuses because I put down money before it was decided what they were going to be. Still though, places like Gamestop are taking money before the street date so maybe Amazon will be cool and know they owe you something.

Amazon is pretty good about customer service, you might want to give them a call and explain your situation. Chances are they will set things straight.

Speaking of Amazon, Arken was awesome and sent me a nice new headset for my birthday, so the next podcast won't have those weird volume drops and less annoying pops.

Wooo goo Arken!

I'm not sure if this was posted yet but this is the first time that I've seen it (as it's a dynamic event, I would consider this spoilerish so view at your own caution):

It's the
Shadow Behemoth
Dynamic Event:

All I can say is wow. This game has the potential to be a game changer for the MMO genre. Wow.

They really aren't kidding when they mean everything is endgame and your level really doesn't matter at all hence throwing giant bosses at you at level 1 then again at level 15 here.

I know. I couldn't believe this boss was a level 15. It's weird how no other game has really tried what GW2 is doing until now. It seems so much better. On top of that, no monthly subscription. There are no words.

To sum up the video:

- They're making the game harder
- Toned down spell effects
- We don't have to wait 6 months for release

That sounds great. I'm going to watch the panel videos myself if I have time, but your summary already clarifies two concerns I've seen regarding the game. On the difficulty, I assume they mean the Dynamic Events and the ability to zerg them rather than the Explorable Dungeons (it seems like these are already extremely hard so I don't see them raising the difficulty of those).

As long as it releases before school starts it's a win win. I lose gems but I get to play and review it early. I win the bet with gems. Rofl.

Ohhhh damn, that boss is bad ass. I was looking at the background while they were fighting, such awesome artwork with great pastel shading.

After watching the 5 "Future of MMOs panel" videos that Jira posted the last one is ArenaNet/Guild Wars 2 specific so if you don't have time (or want) to watch all of them then watch the last one if you're just interested in the GW2 stuff. It pretty much just has what Jira already summarized, but it does show another dynamic event with another pretty big boss.

That looks like it was running @ 15 fps tho.

Given that it's beta, I can excuse it. If it's still running at that kinda fps at release then there's a problem.

I agree. The overall art style of this game is just really well done. A game may have lots of places to explore, but it's gotta make you explore - the design of the world definitely wants to make me explore!

EDIT:

Also, one of the things that was really interesting in the future of MMOs panel is something that Jon Peters said which contrasted with James Ohlen, actually. It was that MMOs which have long development times need to innovate fully rather than partly because within that development time there will be developers who will likely match your innovation. Ohlen, on the other hand, seems to hold the philosophy that MMOs need to develop innovation in a few areas of MMOs (or any genre) but leave other well-tested areas alone. I don't think Ohlen was saying that he believed in innovation partly, but it seems that they are of different sentiment still - I can even see this when you look at the respective MMOs - GW2 and TOR. TOR is all about the story innovation, but GW2 kinda matches it with its own personal story instances that have a major impact upon your individual player character. There's also even a sort of voting system (not really conversation system but same principle) within the explorable dungeons as far as taking different paths within each dungeon. Also, GW2 is innovating within other aspects of the genre completely as well. It's just kinda interesting to see.

I want to put a caveat in here though - I respect James Ohlen a lot. He is one of my favorite developers and I am not attacking TOR in the slightest. I just found that part of the panel interesting.

Yep, only two more days until GameStop screws up me CE pre-purchase and I have to run around like a chicken with my head cut off to attempt to rectify it before the CE is no longer available.

God, I hope that doesn't happen...

should have saved $350 so you can preorder on GW2.com and then run off to gamestop ;P

do we know what time it'll be up on GW2.com?

The CE isn't being sold online. Gamestop is the only place to pre-purchase it.

As for when GW2 sites starts selling the digital copies, I don't think they've said yet.

I'm still holding out hope that tomorrow is a big day for news;

100% chance of details on Pre-Purchase (when it begins)
50% chance of details on first Beta Event.
1% chance of a release date...
