Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

I still can't believe Little King's Story sold bad on the Wii. The Wii seemed like the perfect console for that game.

well, it kinda had some legs, but i don't think it was too lucrative for xseed.

it did numbers some other small publishers would have liked to see though. for the really small guys, even games that sell 30,000-40,000 are considered modest successes (depending on the title).

sega gave the wii a ton of support. they brought over a lot of exclusives and timed exclusives.

I think I'm more critical of the idea that they even made PS360 games at all, because none of them did especially well and they were constantly struggling with money this whole generation, aside from the aforementioned Mario and Sonic games and Sonic's games on the Wii. So it was an endless cycle of Sega making a a PS360 game, it typically bombing, and then they'd just cull from the good money to send after the bad money.

And yes, Sega did bring a lot of exclusives. Then again, so did UBISoft.

One would think that they would take the hint. We shall see.
(and that fudzilla thread is a bit disappointing thus far..)

I know that its not gonna happen, but i would really really love Nintendo to buy THQ and Sega.

It would be one heck of an hefty investment but there are so many good IPs connected to those 2 companies alone...

Examples:

Zelda could take about 5 years on a console to make (SS was 5 years in development), why not release a Darksiders in between so adventure fans have something to pass the time.

No GTA on Wii U? No prob, they got Saints row.

Next Mario comes in 3 years earliest? A sonic 3D game could fill the gap (With Nintendo overlooking it. Making it at least decent!)

No sports games? Bring back Sega Sports franchises.

No racers? Daytona and Sega Rally could be made...

and so on...

Dude, we go over this every week. :P

Nintendo would be better to wait and buy the IPs and talent when the two eventually go under.

It would be an pre emtiove strike to avoid microsoft or sony (like the could invest anything *muhaha*) getting the goods!

Eep, that's true actually. Never thought of that. :P

I've been enjoying watching specialguy squirm at the mere notion of this being a possibility.
I'll toast to that!

You know you're one of my favorite Nintendo buddies 'round here, right? Hahaha..
...
I think we stand a good chance of it being a bit more peaceful/less trolly around here while that Sony specs stuff is going-on in other threads now.

Great minds think alike :D Really enjoy your posts aswell!

I think the whole Nintendo trolling may be scaled back alot if those rumors turn out to be true.

Everyone expecting a huge jump like last gen will be disappointed. I played arkham city on the xbox 360 and on PC on medium in 1080p. The difference was noticable but by far not mindblowing... with DX11 on...

That's what I've been arguing.

Take the best visuals of this gen's strongest console and place it next to the best visuals of this gen's weakest console.

Next, take the best visuals of, say, the 720, and place it next to the best visuals of the Wii U.

The differences will be remarkable, in that difference is going to become less and less dramatic as we go to the next generation. I can tell you that most consumers will look at the 720's best, and they'll conclude that it's not $200-300 more than the Wii U's best. And one would think that developers (when being sensible)(ha. ha. ha.) are going to decide that potential bankruptcy isn't worth going for that difference.

Sega....... I dunno.

They seem lost in their own money-making bullshit and won't rock the boat AT ALL unless it was part of their deal with Platinum Games. I started seeing this trend when they pushed Monkey Ball on everything but my graph calculator. Internally, they're just a huge void of unused talent, and I remember quite a few of their development teams excised themselves in the last developer shuffle (which they seem to do internally every YEAR now).

And with Nagoshi at the helm as CCO, they are only going to get worse. (speaking of which, looking at recent pictures of him, this man is in dire need of either a sandwich or an adjustment to his chemo treatments)

Sega is getting in their own way of being god-tier awesome as a 3rd-party. There was no reason for them to bust up their amazing Dreamcast-era teams, but they did it anyways, to their detriment. There was no need to farm out their development so they could pump out Yakuza and Monkey Ball games day and night, but they did it anyways. Their franchises might as well be permanently dead. I really don't think even Nintendo could save them now.

Another factor why the jump wont as big is that they went all out on hardware last gen. Even if they go all out this gen, it wont be enough for a huge leap.

Is this true, will ps4 be on par with wiiu?

If so, Ms needs to follow because no dev will make games for just 1 console that will cost so much. You know. Ps3 and vita didn't sell well until the price dropped. But mostly that happens when current gen is almost over. So maybe sony see's that they need to follow another path to do the same as nintendo does + tablet controller

Nintendo won't buy anyone guys

I'm fine with them taking great head developers and putting them on teams that are doing nothing... Looking at you Mr. Sega leading NST now. I hope I'm in for something great... (1080o, Wave Race, or even something new would be exciting from them)

Ha, just realized that PS4 thread is my first created thread, I don't want a console wars thread, but I love speculating on future hardware... glad the avatar hasn't dismissed a lot of posters, it's actually a pretty mellow thread. I think the entire industry will be in shock next gen, I actually hope Goeff stops bashing Nintendo for having kiddy graphics if that rumor turns out to be true, because the PS4 and Wii U would definitely end up "on par". If he continues his laughing at Reggie, I really hope that Reggie calls him on it.

Gaming journalism is so dead...

Just saw a Pandoras Tower review that states it dosent have enough RPG elements as its greatest weakness.

Yeah not surprising considering its an action adventure... MY GOD!

i want to be a gaming journalist. I could do a better job (AND attend E3!!!) with one hand tied behind my back and having celine dion music playing while doing the review!

I fear WiiU may be suffering from totally incompetent journalists!

Nintendo usually buys talent not IPs like when they bought Monolith Soft but haven't bought their IPs like XenoSaga and Baten Kaitos.

Wait... so who owns their IPs? and didn't blue ocean or whatever it is called come out on Playstation? so I have to imagine that Nintendo bought that IP with the team, no? same with that photography horror.

Don't blame the press Nintendo's own E3 press conference did an awful job of explaining the concept of the WiiU.

The concept video talked only about the new controller, which is what you are referring to, Nintendo referenced the new console multiple times during their press conference.

In 2010 They were worth $34.92 billion
they burned over $16 billion in two years :O

I know they do more than videogames
what I am saying overall is that they need a new business model ASAP and going cutting edge (if rumors are true) again is not helping their situation at all
How would that not help their situation? Take what they have been most profitable in for the last five years, and keep doing it. Even in a worst-case scenario it's not going to cost them more than 1.5 billion (what Microsoft lost on the original XBox). If they create a new business model, that model shouldn't touch their video game division at all.

Wait... so who owns their IPs? and didn't blue ocean or whatever it is called come out on Playstation? so I have to imagine that Nintendo bought that IP with the team, no? same with that photography horror.

I think their IPs are still with Namco Bandai. Regarding Nintendo's Endless Ocean the IP is called Forever Blue in Japan which is a spiritual successor to Arika's (Which I think is still a 3RD party) PS2 Ever Blue. The Fatal Frame one is the only one confusing since it's Tecmo's IP.

I think Namco-Bandai kept the Xenosaga franchise... Maybe they also kept Baten Kaitos?

Isnt it funny how we got from "Teh game must be AZ BRUTAL AZ POZZIBLE!!!!!!" to "The specs need to be as HARDCOREZZZ INSANE as possible!!!".

Nintendo was kiddie because they didnt have da brutal gamez!!!

Now their "always a gen behind" because their specs arent "INSANELY UBER HARCORE!!! to da maxxxxxxx"

Nintendoes what others dont -> survive on its own, lol

lol you just reminded me of the mortal kombat gore only being on the genesis and removed from the SNES version... I think it was MKII and the original still had blood on the SNES, but man yeah would be funny if this was the beginning of all this nonsense about Nintendo being kiddy, especially during the N64 era with Golden Eye and Perfect Dark.

We must admit it wasn't such a nonsense at the N64 era. Except the games you cited, Rare games until Conkers' after the end of the N64 lifecycle were really symbolics (DK64, Banjo, even Jet Force Gemini). While sony was developing franchises than appeal specifically to an older public, like Gran Turismo and Resident Evil.
That said, the most funny thing is now, Nintendo appealing to a very old public with Kawashima for example - not kiddy anymore at its fullest.

Uhhh...

Posted this in the other thread, but it fits here aswell. USB2 will IMO be enough for WiiU:

20-25mb/sec on USB2 is enough people.

Still faster than Wiis and Xbox360s dvd drive and ps3s blu ray drive.

Ps3s Blu Ray drive is a 2x drive with 72mbit wich equals 9mbyte/sec

4x Blu ray drive is 144mbit and therefor 18mb/sec.

So an external hdd would have the 4.X speed of a blu ray drive.

No complains from my side...

More uhhing at Sony "developing" these games.
There part in the creation of these franchises was nil.

GT is as much sony's as Xenoblade is Nintendo's. Actually this might not be accurate, Monolith is first party, not sure about GT's Developer, but it is certainly 2nd party.

Good morning! My complements on your thread. It's very entertaining, and interesting to watch the twisting and contorting. Hehe..

That rumour spawned from a site that Goes Nintendo. So uh, yeah.

Essentially the rumour is a "my dad works at a company and..." thing.

Mr. Vettel was told to act like he was driving while holding a Wii U controller

If this is an example of how Nintendo plans to broaden their current market, they are on the right track. Will we see this promo for E3?

If there is one takeaway I got from talking to various publishers and developers on the PAX East 2012 show floor, it's that everyone is interested in Wii U, and for those more in the know, they're jazzed for Nintendo to blow the doors off of their next system at E3 2012 in June.

Yeah, but... they could. Was the point.

On the other hand, Nintendo buying SEGA and making use of their resources, that would be one reason less for me to even care what the competition is doing.

You succumbed to the temptation :p

I think it's just fair play, a lot of posters in this thread have had to deal with the on par bs, and now sony fans are understanding some of that pain, personally, I think the specs would be fine and the entire generation will come out better for it.

You'll be a bit happier too, as people won't be so down about the Wii U anymore, expectations of the other consoles are finally being curtailed a bit.
