At the box office: The Avengers vs The Dark Knight Rises

Do Avengers fanatics think this is going to last? There's a storm coming, Mr. Whedon. You and your fanboys better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
 
Can anyone explain how ice age became so huge overseas? It is so confusing since its a pretty mid-level animated franchise in America.

Joe public doesn't have a clue who the avengers are. I didn't know who they were before talk of a movie started up and I'd call myself a geek.

If I asked my wife who the avengers were shed probably think the of the movie with us thurman.

Batman is well known and it comes from a history of two previous well received and quality films.

The avengers come from a group whose history on film is mixed. Putting them in one movie sounds awesome to me but to the female Joe public that will sound like boring non stop action.

Also whedon sucks

The last one had mammoths, sabretooth tigers, & dinosaurs. It should have been the biggest thing ever in the US.

Plus that little prehistoric rat could never get that nut open. Good times...

I guess people thought the movie would play really well to kids, but the marketing effort was a complete disaster and the movie failed to generate any traction with audiences of any demographic.

I don't remember people comparing TDK to SR in terms of box office predictions, anyway.

the world would be a better place if Speed Racer had had a TDK-like success

Or the simple reason: speed racer is a fucking awful movie that was panned by almost every critic (38% RT).
 
I think people are highly underestimating how much pull Ledger's death had to do with the insane numbers that TDK did. I love the movie as much as anyone else in this thread, but Ledger pulled in a huge amount of female audience that only wanted to see the movie because of him.

If it weren't for 3D for Avengers I would say DKR easily but 3D will boost the numbers. I think they'll wind up doing about the same WW, maybe DKR ahead by a bit. But not the slaughter that GAFers are predicting in this thread.

The fuck? You trolling, bro? I find it impossible that someone could claim to be a geek and not know of the Avengers. Even if you didn't know the name, people know the name Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, or Thor. If you knew anything about them at all you knew they were on a super team.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus had Johnny Depp and Heath Ledger's real final performance, it only made $7M domestic.

I'm not saying Ledger's death didn't help the box office, but you guys in this thread are REALLY overestimating the effect it had.

Are you seriously trying to use a smaller budget film to gauge the appeal of Heath Ledger? Aside from the fact that he died during production of that film only to be replaced by other actors, TDK was his last completed role and probably one of his best performances of his career. Try another angle.

If the movie hadn't delivered in terms of quality then you may have had a point, but it did and the most likely scenario is that it increases what Dark Knight did and not go lower. The Avengers have a much bigger hill to climb if anything.
 
I hope they both bomb, and Hollywood rethinks its entire tentpole strategy, stops making comic book movies, and starts making dramas again.

Also, I want a pony.
 
One thing is for sure:

In world-wide numbers, the Avengers will outgross all of Marvel's previous movies leading up to this. People may not know the Avengers like they know Batman, but they know the movies prior to this, so their thinking is:

"Holy shit they're doing a movie with Iron Man, AND Captain American, AND the HULK AND Thor...WTF!?"


I have heard this sentiment waaaaaaay too many times now. Worldwide, this movie will be a fucking monster. May not beat DKR, but I think you guys are really underestimating it.

No. It won't outgross Spiderman, and I doubt it will outgross Iron Man 2. The hulk's pro purity is really minuscule and IM 2 had an entire movie focusing on RDJ. None of the others have his BO pull. The focus of the Avengers is not RDJ and therefor it will gross less than IM 2.

Agree to disagree then.But to be clear, I was counting Marvel Studio's movies leading up to the Avengers, so Spiderman was not in my mind.

Still think it will outgross Iron Man 2 though.

Kids are gonna jump on the Avengers train, they didn't give a shit about Iron Man.

Nope, I had never heard of the avengers as a team, I knew who the hulk was and had heard of captain america\thor\iron man but even those I didn't know squat about before the films, so no I did not no they had their own justice league.

I'm in Australia so I'm part of the worldwide market, the avengers and those other characters obviously aren't as well known overseas as they are in the states.
 
Dark Knight Rises will beat Avengers in box office. That is easy to predict. But people predicting that Avengers will do poorly or less than other Marvel movies is delusional. Avengers will do crazy business. TDKR will just do a bit crazier.

So been out of the loop but what is the current record for opening day and opening weekend?

Is it held by the last Harry Potter movie or Avatar?

Yeah what PhonicipleBone said. DKR will earn more but Avengers won't do badly. Nobody is coming close to 170 million of hp7 though.
 
I remember TDK's tracking, I think it was somewhere in the range of 110-120 million, then it defied expectations in a big way.

Still though, 150 million OW is looking good at least for Avengers.

The last harry pottah movie indeed holds the highest opening day and weekend records.

Avatar btw didn't open big, it had crazy ass legs instead.
