NHL '12 Playoffs |OT| "The Cup is our destiny this year."

refs lost control of this game. Kind of fun in some ways since we don't get these very often anymore. I expect some serious hammers to come down tomorrow though.

Why? The only way anyone is getting a suspension is if a goalie gets trucked over. Sorry Chicago.

Were ANY of you alive in the 80's? Jesus, one ugly game and suddenly the game is an embarrassment. Piss off.

It's not the 80s anymore and I'd like to think we've come a long enough way in our understanding of head trauma and other injuries to make an effort to end this bullshit.

And it's definitely not going to help the image of the game in public.

Flyers or Pens winning the Cup would be awful, or any other team using intimidation for that matter. Elliott Friedman had a great point on the Hotstove yesterday. Teams are doing what Boston did, winning by intimidating the opponent, and getting away with it because the refs and the league are allowing it to happen. It's worse this year. Much worse. Same thing is happening between Ottawa and New York.

Bylsma was a disgrace simply by telling his team to keep doing what they'd been doing after being blown out defensively in the first two games.
NOW he should be lynched by the Flyers, his own team, the NHL, the NHLPA, Lemieux, Bettman and the mayor of Pittsburgh.
I hope he gets booed out of his own press conference.

Then he should get a job managing talent in the WWE.

To be fair to Bylsma I think the message that he was sending is that if they play the system they are supposed to play they'll be fine, like they were the majority of the regular season. I think he didn't want to screw with the team's mentality and have them think they have to make major changes in the middle of the playoffs. I think he just wanted them to have faith in the system that made them successful this year without putting too much pressure on them. I think.

This team's reaction in Period 1 was pathetic though. This was almost as bad as the Islander's game. It's pathetic this team keeps getting involved in this garbage.

Brucewaynegretzky credit to you, you wanted the Pens and now your boys got a 3 game lead. You were bang on.

I kinda agree. Not sure why this so many in this thread are reacting so strongly, I used to see games much chippier than this 10 times a year lol.
I think this was a culmination of all the shitty refereeing going on through this entire playoffs.

The officiating so far this post-season has just been downright garbage all around.

I've been a hockey fan for most of the 30 years I've been alive. I love hockey. I don't love when Hockey gets a horrible reputation because it's a 60 minute circus of goons fighting each other in a match of payback.

Just because it's "always been like this" doesn't exactly make it right. And I know it's not always like this.

What do you mean by intimidation? Being chippy and cheating a little?

Pretty much. When you put away the whistle the players just take it into their own hands and things spiral out of control. I guess that's your "playoff hockey", but not sure how long the league lasts if every game is like this one or the Preds game

Hey what are you doing here

If this happens, I'm stabbing Shanny in the neck with the nearest object. Not because Shaw's on the Hawks, but because Shanny has been an assclown this post season

Edit: chicken next?

This isn't the 80's. This is 2012. The game should have evolved away from this kind of barnyard bullshit.

happens once in awhile now. This is part of the sport, whether we choose to acknowledge that fact or not. And while the refs lost control the players are just as bad. I mean Neal was headhunting at the end of the game.

what exactly crossed the line? not trying to be snarky, interested to hear the opinion.

The complete lack of control by the officials.

Players trying to deliver cheapshots for the hell of it.

I could go on but it seems that most people have covered it already.

As soon as inflicting serious injury on someone takes precedence over winning the game, the line is crossed.

let me clarify: imagine how much the sport would get shit on if a majority of the palyers were black.

nba players get called thugs, etc...doesn't exist in hockey.

Doesn't exist because fighting has always been part of hockey. It's permanently sealed into the sport's identity, or the NHL's identity. There's always been a little self-policing within games by enforcers, who are there specifically to fight.

Any physical altercations on the court in NBA games are not part of the norm, and that's why people are quick to call NBA players thugs at any sign of a scuffle.

That's my answer, at least. Feel free to correct me, or provide better answers.

Nothing about that "hit" deserved a suspension.

I expect all Flyers to be suspended and the Pens to get nothing.

Would it even surprise anyone at this point?

Also:

"Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be. But what happened Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia wasn't hockey. It was a travesty. It was painful to watch the game I love turn into a sideshow like that.

The NHL had a chance to send a clear and strong message that those kinds of actions are unacceptable and embarrassing to the sport. It failed.

We, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players. We must make it clear that those kinds of actions will not be tolerated and will be met with meaningful disciplinary action.

If the events relating to Friday night reflect the state of the league, I need to re-think whether I want to be a part of it."

:lol

Definite suspensions:

Asham (cross-check to the throat)
Neal (2 headhunts on 2 straight shifts)

Should-be suspensions:

Bylsma (lost complete control of the team)
Referee (Not kicking James Neal out after the headhunts, which led to another huge fight)

God the Pens suck against the Flyers.

Fixed.

Anyone saying the actions in this game were "okay" is kidding themselves.

A guy went after Neal's knee. Asham pushed Schenn's face into the ice. Hartnell's hair was pulled. Neal tried taking the head off a player. These things are not "okay." This should not have been allowed to happen.

The league is now going to become a nationwide joke if they don't do anything to these players. The weak punishment on Weber started it all.

The national media could have a field day with this if they wanted.

Don't forget the cross check to the throat.

It's happened in four different series in this playoffs already.

Something is wrong on a league wide level.

With all due respect, we're watching playoff hockey. It was like this last year, and the year before that, and the year before that, etc.

Whether you think this stuff has a place in the game is your opinion, but to say that something is wrong this season compared to whatever it is your comparing it to is wrong, IMO.

With that being said, some of the stuff that happened is definitely suspension worthy. It'll be interesting to see how severe Shanahan's punishments are.
