NHL '12 Playoffs |OT| "The Cup is our destiny this year."

Definite suspensions:

Asham (cross-check to the throat)
Neal (2 headhunts on 2 straight shifts)

Should-be suspensions:

Bylsma (lost complete control of the team)
Referee (Not kicking James Neal out after the headhunts, which led to another huge fight)

Adams also. He got an instigator under 5 minutes. Isn't that automatic one game? plus hair pulling.

Emotions boiled over. It's not like this happens every game.
Sure seems like it's happened a lot more often than normal over the past few days.

Dunno if anyone would agree with this, but I feel like there's been an even greater focus this year on teams being tougher and physically dominant. It's like everyone's trying to follow the Bruins' model for success. This is going to lead to more violent games. And with the PIT/PHI series, the media was really ramping up the rivalry and basically embracing the fact that it would be violent. The players are embracing it.

The league is now going to become a nationwide joke if they don't do anything to these players. The weak punishment on Weber started it all.

The national media could have a field day with this if they wanted.
Pretty much this. That set the standard for this playoffs and every injury that comes out of it should be pinned on Shanahan's head.

With all due respect, we're watching playoff hockey. It was like this last year, and the year before that, and the year before that, etc.

Whether you think this stuff has a place in the game is your opinion, but to say that something is wrong this season compared to whatever it is your comparing it to is wrong, IMO.

Playoff hockey is rarely this dirty. Intense? Yes. Physical? Sure. This kind of seemingly institutionalized lawlessness? No.

The Blues are certainly doing that. They're making up for their lack of playoff experience by being goons.

New to hockey, eh? It's been the same as long as I can remember.

Yeah, back in... '08, '09? Used to come in here and talk shit with TurtleSnatcher the Stars fan. Hoped they'd win the division just so they could add a much needed banner to the rafters. Mii's posting constantly about how stripping Marleau of the C would miraculously change their fortunes in the playoffs, then posting pics of beached sharks. Marty Chin only showing up for the playoffs.

Then my buddy that I used to go to games with moved and they moved the Sharks to Comcast California and that was the end of that.

Yeah I think there is something to this. Combine this with players having hair-line triggers when it comes to policing the game (people seeking retribution for hard hits that are completely clean, never mind the dirty ones) and stuff can boil over quickly.

See my edit. I agree that there were some dirty plays, but I still think it's an overreaction to call this game a disgrace/embarrassment/etc.

dang, I don't remember you posting at all! I was around back then too. Come back to us! We can use all the support we can get with this series.

Also it's funny you bring up Marleau being stripped of the C haha. Sure we've made the WCF a couple times but Patty sure isn't anymore consistent.

Fixed.

Anyone saying the actions in this game were "okay" is kidding themselves.

A guy went after Neal's knee. Asham pushed Schenn's face into the ice. Hartnell's hair was pulled. Neal tried taking the head off a player. These things are not "okay." This should not have been allowed to happen.

I don't know why people are freaking out about this stuff. Seems like there should, and will be suspensions handed out.

Maybe, but there are more than a couple hockey games as crazy as this one every post-season.

Speaking to your second point, it'll be interesting to see if this kind of thing continues or if it balances out over the next few rounds.

You're definitely right. Isn't it usually the norm after a team wins the championship everyone else tries to emulate them or build their team in the same way to hopefully repeat their success?

Because the precedent has already been set with the Weber punishment. There was no point for that head-smash but an intent to injure, and a $2500 fine was handed out.

I blame Weber for everything, and the rest of the Preds, and then Sef as well just because he deserves to be blamed for something.

Edit: Milly too, he gets blamed as well.

Once upon a time, I was a San Jose Sharks fan, but that was another life.

Asham, Neal (twice), Hartnell getting his hair pulled, etc...

I have always voiced my respect for the pens players and their abilities, despite the rivalry...but what a bunch of bullshit

It's funny to see the NHL's and Shanahan's double standard throughout this season. Going trigger happy on the suspensions during preseason to giving Weber a paltry fine setting the precedent for the rest of the playoffs so far.

I'm not familiar with the Weber thing, but was that before Shanahan?

It has been a entertaining series. I like the intensity but things like that stick to the throat crap should be immediate suspension. But it's the playoffs. Things are going to get a bit chippy.

It's not just this game, though.

It's Weber using the boards as a WWE turnbuckle in Nashville. It's the ambush the Senators launched on Boyle last night. It's the brawl that the Sharks-Blues game turned into last night.

This "line crossing" is happening all over the league.

gotta say I'm damn proud to be a Flyers fan after these 3 games

Penguins got what they deserved today and will get 1 more helping on Wednesday to send them off back to Shittsburgh

as far as discipline goes I think Neal is the only one who should sit next game. Asham's hit was unnecessary and looked pretty high, but getting thrown out of the game is a good enough punishment for that

I never thought I would see the day where fans would actually agree with the instigator rule. You get all the asshole plays (Shaw, Weber, Neal, etc) from guys who know they'll never be held accountable, which leads to this culture of "well if you do this, I'll do THIS!" *head rolls off*...

The game was more violent 25 years ago, but it was less dirty. If you don't understand the distinction between the two, I'm sorry.

Shaw did not fucking try to do that. Do you even know what you're talking about, or are you just talking incessantly at us now?

Then Shanahan and the NHL should be blamed for failing to properly discipline the transgressing players.
