The wonders of dumpster diving

Wow only movie stars change their underwear daily..
This certainly puts things into perspective.

Are people looking down on garbage picking really being seen as 'elitist?'
Unbelievable.

I said throw away not change. Read much?

I can't speak for people and their situations of why they do it. I did watch the documentary and the point of it was that there is to much food wasted in this country and that food shouldn't be in the dumpster in the first place. If it is there and it's safe then let people use it.

I dumpster dove when my local comic book store closed. Me and my best friend came away with a garbage bag full of indie comix. Before then I refused to read black and white books, but all that dumpster gold changed my mind.

So it's wrong just because they are "being cheap"?

It's a low and pathetic act and only acceptable for those who CAN'T afford the few dollars to buy it. You're on the street and need food? Go for it, man. I wish you luck. If you don't live in the street is just shows that you're willing to toss pride and self respect to save a penny. And yes, that is a bad thing. You might as well start getting orders from Meals-on-Wheels and pretend to be disabled or go to a restaurant and refuse to pay after eating because you placed a bug on your plate.

I never took food from a dumpster but it's common for schools to throw away supplies they don't use so they can order more for the next year. It's pretty much their attempt to use their whole budget so it doesn't get cut the following year.

So yeah, round the end of June or early July I'd go hit up the elementary schools and come out with tons of paper, pencils, folders, and other supplies for Fall. Used to find some cool antiques too if someone managed to clean out a store room.

Yeah, it makes no sense but what do you expect for public school in Michigan. :\

I could do this, or something like it, but the minute you suggest eating food that was just surrounded in garbage I feel gross.

Yeah, doing it for a comic book store throwing all their stock isn't bad. Doing it to regularly supplement your diet? Fucking terrible.

Is that really where we're gonna draw the line?

Sorry but..

The only difference is that the people on the left have no choice but to live on scraps.

So people finding food whether or not it's sealed since they are starving is exactly the same as people who go into regularly cleaned out dumpsters picking up sealed food that was wasted for petty reasons to save a few bucks?

I wouldn't say that they are the same.

People equate going through other peoples garbage with homeless people. Do I really need to link you to a scientific study for that?

lol no.

People also equate going to thrift stores as something that poor people do. Yet many business men & people well off go to thrift stores to buy ties (or other things) for cheap prices.

Question: Have you ever considered simply asking the store if you can have their damaged produce before they toss it in the garbage?
Yep. Most grocery store chains that I know of (Safeway, Foodlion, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Ingles, etc.) have policies dictating that the food be disposed of and not given away. Some grocery stores will set up programs donating a very limited amount of tossed out food (typically just bread) to food kitchens, but largely due to liability reasons, they have to toss it in the trash. But it hasn't stopped me from asking.

If you want to each cheese and meat out of the garbage more power to you, but I don't feel i'm being ignorant for thinking that's nasty as fuck.
Whether or not you "feel" as though you are being ignorant, you are. Unspoiled and clean produce is unspoiled and clean. Simple enough. Your fear about the food because it sat in a metal canister is your own hang up.

What the fuck is this shit? Are you seriously saying there is no difference between those two scenarios except necessity? And whether or not "people" equate going through the garbage with homelessness or not, I fail to see how that matters. If you are so worried about your social image that you can't nab some perfectly good food from a dumpster, why the fuck should anyone else care? Anyway, this mostly happens late at night. I doubt any of your high-roller, baller-ass-baller friends would be hanging around to judge you.

People also need to remember that sealed bags aren't vacuums.

If meat or produce are placed in temperatures that promote the growth of bacteria, the fact that it's in a sealed bag isn't going to do anything to stop that growth from happening.

I'm sorry, mate, but distinguishing spoiled meat from good meat isn't particularly hard. When diving, it's smart to be cautious, to pick things that hedge your bet. If it's clear the meat has been in the dumpster since the day before (or longer), avoid it (then again, if it's the winter, game on). Check general temperatures with your hands. Check vacuum sealed bags and wrap for holes or other openings. Check for cross contamination with other foods in the dumpster. Check for signs of spoilage, like bad smells, textures, colors, mold, etc.
In all of my experience, I've yet to get sick from spoiled food. I have certainly come across food that is spoiled, mind you. I'm just not an idiot. I don't eat it.

How do I respond to this topic?

1. Be grossed out and act pretentious about fresh food...

2. Act high and mighty and supporting something that aims to prevent waste...

Ya I think I'll just walk away from this one.

Bolded for easy readin
You said "this is GAF if you don't shower 3 times a day and throw away your underwear after wearing them once your a dirty hobo."
And then you link me to a thread where people who dont change their underwear for days are ridiculed.

So... you arent really making a very good argument.

Tell someone that you like digging through trash like a hobo to get a free carrot or a bunch of bananas or some other crap. See how far you get. It's sad and pathetic, honestly.

It reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t36jwyVncmQ
:lol Fuck you. It's free food, the real stupid thing here is that EDIBLE FOOD is being thrown out because people like you are so pathetic about not eating anything that isn't of the topmost quality. Also, food is taken from poor countries to rich ones just to be thrown away while people in those countries starve to death. I don't want to support that kind of behaviour financially, so I dumbster dive.

Most people I know do know I dumbster dive. I've even told my parents and they were cool about it. Also, if we take, say, the girls I'm friends with @ Facebook, about 60 or 70% of them have dumpster dived at least a few times in their lives (often with me, too) or eaten food I have/someone else has picked up from a dumpster, and probably 90% of them know I dumbster dive. So yeah, me and the people I know aren't as pathetic as you are as to judge people based on this stuff.

A few friends of mine used to do this at a Frito-Lay factory, so they would be getting sealed-airtight bags of chips that were likely covered in enough salt to kill any potential bacteria.

Do they smell bad? Sure. So fucking what? I can handle a little odor, and if you can't, all the more for me.

You should probably stop to consider the mechanism that scent operates by.

What if something was thrown out because the entire batch was infected with some kind of bacteria?

Looks fine, smells fine, not past the date.

What then?

2. Act high and mighty and supporting something that aims to prevent waste...

It's waste when it hits the bin. Lets try and prevent it from getting that far. And let's be honest here, if all these stored stopped doing it and gave everything to like a homeless shelter, these dumpster divers would be annoyed they can't get free food anymore.

I've gone about a handful of times, but never for food. Furnished an empty summer rental apartment with rich college students throwaways :)

This thread has blown my mind.

People do this? I'm not getting trolled?
So instead of grocery shopping you visit your local garbage dumpster, flip it open and start opening bags for the off chance you find something that's not completely disgusting?

Wow, more power to you guys, but i'm not interested.

It's funny how people who dumpster dive claim to be deeply concerned about the amount of good food thrown away, but if you simply eat other people's garbage and don't actually say anything to the individuals throwing away the food, you're not solving anything.

Benefiting from a problem is not solving a problem.

Well hot damn, food safety really is that easy! Who needs a thermometer when you can use your hand?

This is what I was kinda wondering.

do you guys just show up unannounced at grocery stores and start going through their dumpsters? I would think if anyone saw that, they'd call the police.

Closet thing I've done to this was drink beer I found in a stream with my friend on the Appalachian Trail. Haha. Oh and I got naked in a dumpster for a certain YouTube video...

Typically you go late at night, after the store has closed. While in a lot of places there is nothing against the law about dumpster diving, police or store employees may have other concerns like trespassing. I've seen a lot of police be really cool about diving, though.

Oh nooooo, more baseless, subjective judgement. How can I go on living with myself? Maybe you'd care to start arguing with facts, but until then, I'd suggest a break. Ad hominem doesn't look good on ya.

I TOTALLY agree on this point. I do NOT think lifestyle changes are effective political or sociological actions or tactics, and I'd never argue otherwise. I think as far as personal liberation goes, fine. But certainly not anything more. That said, living off the waste of our society for free still feels damn good.

i don't see what the strong reaction against dumpster diving is for. for food, it can be a bit iffy but if you find a place that throws away food in a safe way than it's totally worth it. there was a grocery store around here that threw out fruits and veggies in containers that were meant for dumpster divers to get. it was all very high quality stuff, with just bumps and bruises on most of them.

I remember one time me and my friend were walking somewhere and we took a shortcut behind a grocery store and we passed the dumpster and the entire thing was FILLED with food.

Tons of sandwiches. Whole Pizzas. Sausages. Fried Chicken, entire loaves of french bread.

Everything was untouched. Why Couldn't they drop it off at a homeless shelter? Or at least call someone from the homeless shelter to come and pick it up?

The dumpster was practically overflowing.

Expired food, even shelf stable items, are considered potentially dangerous and can't be donated.

Anything that has to be hot held/refrigerated cannot be donated unless it is in a condition fit for sale, due to food safety laws. So obviously no food of that type will ever be donated.

Produce past its prime could technically be donated, but if anyone got sick from it the store would be liable. So that's off the table. :(

Basically only stuff like bread can be donated, which goes stale and is unfit for sale long before it becomes unsafe for consumption.

2. Act high and mighty and supporting something that aims to prevent waste...
This sounds really noble. Like the people that go through parks in their free time picking up water bottles(and they just happen to make a few bucks out of it).
But... I doubt these garbage divers are doing this for that.

People in this thread acting shocked... yeah. This is not exactly a new thing, I think I read about it at least 10 years ago. Grocery stores in well-off countries throw away tons and tons of perfectly fine food and pro divers know when and how so they can go and get it just as if they had purchased it.

Not that I could do it, but I'm fussy that way. Still, I applaud the effort that goes into it and the effect it has: less wasted food.

I don't give a shit what people think of me but I would be highly embarrassed

Lol?

I would totally eat that and then make sweet love to the girl making it. She doesn't take any meat and nothing that isn't still in it's wrapping... So yeah, while it probably isn't completely safe it's probably still pretty fine unless you are being a dumbass about it. But no, I wouldn't dumpster dive either, I'm a bitch about my food and don't even like eating what other people made.

You really can't extrapolate the meaning behind my sentence?

Yup I get it, dumpster diving is beneath you.

Question: Have you ever considered simply asking the store if you can have their damaged produce before they toss it in the garbage?

They wouldn't give out the food even if you asked. A lot of these stores have policies preventing them giving food out to their own employees. Less so to the public.

lol, I wouldn't put those examples on the same level.

The example you mentioned in the last part of your post is people fooling people into getting what they want.

Stuff in dumpsters is available for anyone to go and take. You don't have to trick anyone to get it (obviously).

Would someone who is well off that goes into a thrift store be tossing out their pride and self-respect just because they wanted to save a few bucks?

First thing I din't link it. Second you said

If you werent referencing something you arent saying anything. But please, tell me more about these movie stars.

I have a friends that searches for food in dumpsters, I feel sad every time he brings it up. I realize that there might be useful things to be found in dumpsters and that we waste to much but searching for food is over the line imo.

It's funny how people who dumpster dive claim to be deeply concerned about the amount of good food thrown away, but if you simply eat other people's garbage and don't actually say anything to the individuals throwing away the food, you're not solving anything.

That's definitely true. There's a wide conception that starvation occurs because there is not enough food in the world, when in fact farmers often destroy perfectly good crops in order to keep prices high. High prices are what cause starvation, not a lack of available food.

Oh nooooo, more baseless, subjective judgement. How can I go on living with myself? Maybe you'd care to start arguing with facts, but until then, I'd suggest a break. Ad hominem doesn't look good on ya.

How is it not fact?

It's cheap - FACT. You don't want to buy fruit and veggies the normal and honest way and it's only saving a small amount overall.

It's risky - FACT. Dumpsters are a common place for every kind of disease carrying creature. Flies and maggots are in every single one. Rats, mice and others are very common. Would you pull a bag out covered in shit? No? Well you basically are, you just can't see it.

It shows a lack of dignity and pride - FACT. Hobo's do it because they must. You do it while paying for internet, phone, rent, probably a car and petrol. It's lower than a hobo because of that. They are forced to, you aren't. And yes, it is equal to getting orders from Meals-on-Wheels and pretend to be disabled or go to a restaurant and refuse to pay after eating because you placed a bug on your plate because that's also getting free food and requires a lack of respect.

Would someone who is well off that goes into a thrift store be tossing out their pride and self-respect just because they wanted to save a few bucks?

It's still a store. He isn't taking clothes from homeless people.

I remember years ago there was a report on this here in Montreal. This couple was basically doing this at restaurant and hotel dumpsters, they basically bought nothing except the wine, and ate very well.

C'mon GAF.

And.

Dumpster babies, sure. Scimitars, hell yes. But food from a dumpster, never. Its criminal how much we thrown away but I dont think I could ever eat food that has spent any amount of time in a grimy nasty dumpster. Objects are one thing, food is totally no bueno.
Lol! Was expecting this as the first post.

Never for many reason, but most because I live in a hot and humid climate that ass cancer germs that live dumpsters love.

Er, first of all, you aren't actually responding to the quote of yours that I had in my post. Just to simplify . . .

It's a low and pathetic act and only acceptable for those who CAN'T afford the few dollars to buy it.

There's not a single fact in that sentence. Not a single one.

[quote}If you don't live in the street is just shows that you're willing to toss pride and self respect to save a penny. And yes, that is a bad thing. Another astounding lack of facts. Again, not a single fact that I can dig out. Your entire post was void of them. As a substitute, I see personal attacks based on your small-minding view. Not uncommon, though. Flip on talk radio anytime for similar examples, I guess.
