Pretty sure it happened the other way around, where Enix sort of took in Square, but it was really a merger. Also, this happened right after the Final Fantasy movie, which costed Square a mint and a half that they were unlikely to recover from without this merger.

Generally speaking I've never had an issue with more than 3 panels as long as the comic makes me smile/'laugh', or generally they serve a purpose.

I wouldn't say that my suggestion would be an improvement of any sort, but for those who feel the necessity to cut things down to 3 panels, the humour wouldn't be completely lost.
