Technically you target the player with the ability/spell and then when it does damage you can redirect it to a Planeswalker they control. So if you have a Witchbane Orb or something similar that gives you hexproof it protects your Planeswalkers from burn spells.

Another thing to note is that Planeswalkers count as permanents so they can be targeted by anything that would target a permanent (ie Beast Within, Hex Parasite, anything that does proliferate etc etc).

Ya, I was just trying to explain it without getting too involved.

A friend ran into a situation:

If I have Burden of Guilt attached on your creature and it eventually gets equipped with Mask of Avacyn (hexproof), can I still pay 1 to tap it? The argument was that Burden of Guilt says to tap enchanted creature, not tap target enchanted creature; target being the key word.

You can absolutely still tap the creature.

If the word "target" doesn't appear in the spell or ability in question, hexproof/shroud have no effect.

Why is this common? Ugh.

So there isn't any way to blow up the creature they choose to pair before it gets soulbonded and gains hexproof from that card, is there?

http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/faq/avr

You must control another unpaired creature at the moment a creature with soulbond enters the battlefield or the soulbond ability won't trigger at all. However, the creature that pairs with the creature with soulbond isn't chosen until the soulbond ability resolves.

So when the Soulbond guy enters there isn't any way to prevent it from bonding with something (assuming you can't destroy all possible pair targets) since the ability resolves as soon as the choice is made. Also of note, the pairing doesn't target so you can pair up Shrouded creatures or stuff with protection from that color.

It's not clear to me if the binding itself goes on the stack such that you can respond to it.

Is soulbinding in the official rules yet?

If my judge mojo serves me correctly, you can respond to them casting the creature and kill whatever you want and they can choose another target.
If wait and you respond to the come in to play effect to wait to see what they target then stack issues may be more complicated.

That's the distinction I was looking for. You choose the partner at resolution, not when the soulbind goes on the stack. Probably necessary for the ability to not get completely hosed by Vapor Snag/Doom Blade/etc.

One thing I'm really miffed about.

There are only two "Wolfir" cards.

I had expected the Wolfir tribe to replace the werewolf tribe with some intertribal synergy (since most werewolf cards also apply to wolves) but... two cards. That's all that's left of werewolves.

Storywise I would think that it comes down to not many of the wolves were wanting to be all "I repent blah blah" and be merged into permanent man-wolf form.
As far as mechanically I knew from day one of Innistrad that by the last set they would be tapered off.

It amuses me to remember all of the hate about flips all over salvation and other boards and now there is equal hate that there are not more of them.

Kind of ironic that WOTC made such a big deal about humans triumphing over evil in AVR... except humans were already the dominant tribe in both INN and DKA.

Welp, that's emergent gaming for you.

I am just salty that green did not get a mythic miracle :(

Got my AVR fat pack ordered. Now to calmly wait.

Oh yeah, check out just how lucky this kid was opening a pack. The sheer audacity of it made me chuckle.

Faker than a three dollar bill. But those mini packs of 7 are interesting. On occasion you'll get two rares in them.

I'm conflicted about buying two boxes like I normally do. I'm leaving the country in a few months and doubt I'll have time or opportunity to play anymore. But I love opening boosters, it's like an addiction. And I'll still have time to use the new cards until August. I think I'll probably just get one box and a fat pack.

...Unhinged deck is as banned as ST Akuma in Magic matches right? Cuz using some of these cards are friggin' tempting.
One more thing:
aq8u63w7av_en.jpg

Do you need to pay mana to sacrifice or can u sacrifice any creature on the battlefield?

I think you just sac one of your own creatures. No mana cost invovled. I don't think you can sacrifice someone else's creatures though.

I'm going to get a fat pack because of the extra junk (I have for every set since I started with M12) and buy singles to make my deck. I think it's going to be Grixis control.

Of course there are a lot of implicit rules that you should familiarize yourself with, but in general if a card says "Sacrifice a creature" it means just that, although it's implied that it's only creatures you control. I don't think you can ever sacrifice a creature another player controls.

Have my two japanese boxes confirmed, gf is getting one english box.
Will probably buy 1 fat pack also and then will just do weekly drafts and league.
Being a pack opening whore is really a bad thing, and I keep telling myself no because I get the worst boxes but every time I do it anyway.
It is a really bad addiction.

Hey guys. I'm back after a week away. Some people here already figured out why... I'll be staying out of certain threads from now on is all I'll say haha

Zaraki, I got the sword. Glad my cards found their way to you.

I called the lack of a black-white angel a while back. Flavor-wise it makes all the sense in the world. I don't know why people would be surprised.

After having seen the whole set, I'm not overwhelmed, and I'm not underwhelmed. I'm simply whelmed. Almost all the good cards were spoilered.

Also, what's up with the underpowered pre-release cards. The Scars block had some high powered pre-release foils, like Wurmcoil and Hero of Bladehold. This block has been lacking in that regard.

Wandering Wind, do you still have the Sword of Feast and Famine lying around?

Once in a while I open a phenomenal box that just reaffirms my addiction. I had a new phyrexia box that was outstanding, a foil mental misstep (which was worth mythic money before it was banned), a sword, elesh norn, and batterskull all came out of the one box. Sadly all my dark ascension boxes were junk and I only picked up 3 sorrin's through fat packs and individual boosters.

I like looking through commons and uncommons in new sets to see if we have any sleepers but this set seems rather void of them. Thunderous Rath and to a much smaller extent appetite for brains and vessel of endless rest from uncommons, and nothing from commons stands out. Some fantastic cards for limited but nothing that will become delver like.

Speaking of great commons for limited though, Seraph of Dawn the 2/4 angel with flying and lifelink for 4 is phenomenal. Not only does it fly and have lifelink, both of which are great for any card in limited, but it's out of reach of most burn with 4 toughness.

Will give my rundown when I get out of work.

:lol Preordain, Ponder, and green sun banned in modern? Is there any card draw like them still in Modern? Seems weird they were banned.

Edit: Is mental misstep banned in standard? I don't see it in the ban for that date.

Odd, I was watching the Uncharted 3 film edit before, and Sully said that! I've heard of those boosters- are they a US only thing made of completely random cards or something?

Box and a fat pack sounds good. I'll hopefully be doing the same for Return to Ravnica.

Also I have to say there aren't that many useless rares in this set (in regards to limited) as there have been in previous ones. I'd bang my head against the table if I got any of these but otherwise most of the rares are either fantastic or useable in some regards.

Arcane Melee is completely useless by the time it comes out
Conjurer's Closet is just as likely to fuck things up for you as it is be useful
Gallows at Willow Hill asks way to much from you just to kill one creature. Tap down your forces, use 3 mana, and give your opponent a flyer? Fuck that.
Gloom surgeon is just asking to deck yourself, with only 40 cards it would be the dumbest second turn play you could make. You aren't even getting those cards into your graveyard to yank back out later.
Rite of Ruin, by the time you cast it, it will likely do you more harm than good.
Descent into madness, again might as well just punch yourself in the face

I think this set has alot of sleepers in it and some great tools.
Will give my rundown when I get out of work.

By sleepers I mean commons and uncommons like gut shot, beast within, mental misstep, delver, lingering souls, strangleroot etc... Stuff like will get you a buck for selling them as opposed to 5 cents. And stuff that will get you far more if it's a foil. I see a lot of good commons and uncommons, but nothing besides thunderous rath that makes me think I'll be going "wow I can't believe people are paying that much for an uncommon".

I'm not sure if those 7 card boosters are sold outside the US but they must be since that pack in the video was italian. They are random cards, sometimes you get no rare, sometimes you get two. But 7 mythics? No fucking way. You can find lots of random assortments of cards like that. I bought some stacks of old cards (about 50 or so) collected by color and sealed in clear plastic wrap. All junk but had a few random rares in it.

Mental Misstep is only banned in Modern.
Most decks use Serum Visions to replace Preordain. Ponder was too good with the fetch lands for easy shuffles.

cool stuff inc does this package that is a box, a fat pack and each of the precons for one price ($179 in this case).
I have noticed that many places are charging $10 more for this box than in the past.
If my LGS had decided to do that I would have kicked someone in the gooch.

Think Twice? :lol

This wasn't a recent ruling, was it? Wasn't that decided a few months ago?

Correct, it was September of last year apparently. I never knew Misstep was banned so I checked and it was while I was in germany so I missed it.

TrollandToad still have it for $179 for what you described also.

On another note all the cards I ordered came in! Can't wait until school is done! :D

I'm buying a box of this like a sucker. It's a flavor set for me, and the art is sensational. No pre-orders this time around, although at one point I was considering getting playsets of utility lands not named Cavern of Souls, Champion of Lambholt, Ulvenwald Tracker, and Zealous Conscripts, but in the end decided against it. I'll just trade cards that are rotating out.

Yeah, they stopped giving mythics away because they took away from the "mythic" feel and made people less excited to open them in packs. That's what they've said on record, and I do understand it from that angle. However, it's more accurate to say that it was a business decision meant to drive the sales of boosters and keep second market prices for popular mythics high.

My pick for sleeper in terms of value for this set is:

AlchemistsRefuge.jpg

No way it doesn't go up in value. That's SUCH a cool ability.
I agree. Especially when the new Rav block comes around. Going to actively look for this card this weekend.

Alchemist's refuge will definitely go up once someone figures out a great deck to put it in. But it will never come close to Cavern of Souls, which I honestly believe will go up in value and in the (very) long term retain it's value like crazy. Great non basic lands always do. I have an english and a Russian Urborg and if you told me it would be a 20 dollar land in 2012 I would have never believed you. But then I looked back and realized how many non basics creep up in value for years after.
This is why I'm sort of excited for the next FTV set, although history shows that it's better to keep expectations low. That last set was a travesty.

Bloody yanks and your great prices and packages :(

No UK stores do combined packages like that (as far as I can see). Cheapest buying those items together in one order would be £150 or so.

Wonder if using EU stores would save money?

For a second I thought you meant Urborg from Legends. I was so confused, then I remembered the Planar Chaos one.

You're right though: Cavern of Souls will ALWAYS be a money card.

With me included, we have 9 regulars who will each get their own box and a few more who shows up every now and then that might get their own box. I'm getting an extra box or two for drafting. I never bought a box to myself but with so many cards I figured why not. Wizard making dat money off of us. D:

I'm surprised there isn't a Clone-type card anywhere in here. You'd think it'd be good idea to print another way to kill all the Legendary stuff. Hopefully Phantasmal Image gets reprinted in 2013.

Speaking of wording, there are several cards that says "as long as X is in the battlefield, blah blah blah". Riders of Gavony text is "As Riders of Gavony enters the battlefield, choose a creature type. Human creature you control have protection from creatures of the chosen type". Since it doesn't have that first phrase I mentioned, does that mean even if Riders of Gavony isn't on the battlefield anymore after resolving, Humans will still gain protection of said creature type?

See divisionbyzorro's response. I assumed this was a soulbound thing, but it's not.

I don't think so, any more then Goblin King gives all Goblins +1/+1 permanently

No, because they're no longer paired if Riders leaves play.

Riders of Gavony doesn't have a soulbond ability (as I recall - I could be remembering wrong).

But it doesn't matter. Qualities or abilities that aren't printed on a permanent never stick unless the thing granting them that property stays in play, be that counters, permanents, emblems, etc.

How are you guys feeling about Soulbond? It doesn't really jump out at me as something I want to put too much thought into. I'm sure it will be pretty nuts in limited though.

Miracles seem all well and good on the surface, but I predict that they will be very hard to balance in a deck. We might see a lot of one-offs so they truly can be miracle cards when they pop up.

Does anyone here buy singles? It's almost depressing seeing Tamiyo ($40), Temporal Mastery ($40), Tibalt ($25), and Cavern of Souls ($23) up so high already. There are quite a few others that are $10+ as well.

Edit: Takuan, I love your avatar picture, but hate you for getting there first, lol. Tibalt is so dapper.

I agree on one hand, but on the other hand I hope they do not.
Legends should not be so easy to kill, and phantasmal makes it too easy.
I want to see Legends get some backbone again.
