well depending on how many third party (if there's any) it make sense for the roster to be filled with recent/new character in this gen for cross promotion etc. I'm not expecting a huge number of character for a first entry of a fighting game anyway.

if the game is a success, then they can start bringing the more obscure/old character from PS1/PS2 days. I'm not familiar with Nintendo smash bros series, but isn't that game also have limited character and mostly well known character for it's first game in the series?

beside, we know Parappa will be there, so maybe they'll manage to bring 1 or 2 oldies hopefully.

I think the entire point of the game is about cross promotion. it'll be in Sony best interest to feature more recognized character so people in this generation are excited about the game while bringing a few old characters that they may hope to resurrect the franchise. I'm pretty sure the well known characters will be the bigger selling point than the obscure character that only Sony hardcore fans will know, so I expect majority of the character will be from this gen with a few characters from the past.

The first Smash Bros. game had characters like Ness that weren't all that popular at the time (at least with American audiences).
