I have doubts on this story because I don't believe Retro ever said “It’s a project everyone wants us to do” as the original mention of such a claim was from Paul Gale. Unless I'm mistaken.
Nope, you're right. And seriously, in this day and age a Star Fox game seems... redundant. I don't think the franchise is relevant anymore. On the other hand, some people would say that about Kid Icarus.

The "Retro on Starfox" rumor is seen here and there since a moment now, some websites even tried to spread it by posting fake news and illustrations like an Arwing artwork.

When you consider the pedigree & background of nearly all their recent recruits, you can only doubt they are working on that, except if they plan to release a fps featuring a team of space animals, and a hero hitting his enemies with swirling fox tail attacks, covered by a shooting lazorz toad.

We shall see :)

Retro could also just working on fzero, they worked before on a project (something with cars) for the wii. But they never finished it.

You know the best part about Retro revealing their project? No matter what they are working on, someone is going to eat a hat, and it will be funny.

I searched for Retro Studios and Starfox on Google and found out that there is older rumors about this as well. This explains some reason for the rumor:

"While some suggest this new project is likely to be a return to the Metroid franchise, we’d love to see another Nintendo hero get the retro stamp of excellence. After all, having rolled out the barrels for Donkey Kong, perhaps it’s time Retro pulled off a barrel roll of a different kind.”

http://www.screwattack.com/news/community-showcase-retro-studios-making-star-fox-wii-u

Personally i think that it is plausible. Retro Studio did afterall do a Donkey Kong game which was very well receieved. It could be that Nintendo tries to do the same with Starfox.

Yeah that is what I mean. And only my guess, not necessarily my preference. I can't explain the back not letting it lay flat, other than that there seems to be a way for the tablet to do so in promo pieces like the Othello video. So either the charge dock will allow it to lay flat or there will be some other way (cheap plastic snap-ons attaching to the bottom).
I understand. I'm wondering if Nintendo will answer on their design choice, just curious to hear what they have to say regarding choosing pads over sticks.

No, the best part will be that the speculation filling the equivalent of 400 pages of these threads about the game they are working on for Wii U will cease :p

It was interesting at first, annoying now, and unfair for a lot of other studios that deserves as much credit but that we hardly talk about.

I don't like this tendency to view Retro as a Deus Ex Machina, coming from the sky to SAVE THE DAY BAYBI ! They are very talented don't get me wrong, but you know, it's never good to put your eggs on the same basket, Nintendo really need to diversify its pool of western-affiliated studios.

EA Sports and developer EA Tiburon are promising big things for the Madden franchise this year after a string of disappointments in this hardware generation. We sat down with Cam Weber, EA Sports' new general manager of football, to talk about some of the challenges for the series as he works to rebuild its reputation and prepare for the next round of consoles.

..

GI:
There is some fear that Nintendo's Wii U platform will be stuck between the current generation and the next one. Is the console really a next-gen platform?

EA:
Absolutely. It's a [new] platform with a new controller input, so we'll do everything we can to deliver an experience that will take advantage of the hardware for that consumer

GI article on the future of Madden

Under this context.

hey Ideaman, what's your vote for sunday?

Did someone has post this already?

EA Sports' Madden man says Wii U is 'absolutely' next-gen

A portion of a Game Informer interview with Cam Weber, EA Sports' new general manager of football...

Don't start thinking they're making a comment on power though. Wii was next gen too, regardless of the drivel espoused by many an idiot.

You're right, but that's been cited a lot, it doesn't necessarily diminish this report. And honestly, I don't think the quote is even fitting for Star Fox.

No

I know some unannounced third-parties projects, but no first or second party ones.

You know, hinting about unannounced third party stuff and then seeing them confirmed at E3 would be a really neat way to prove yourself to your doubters. Just a thought......

Ah ok so retros project remains a mystery :-) What does everyone want retro to work on? Its Metroid or Zelda right?

:P

Unannounced third party projects? That are announced on other consoles? Or are we talking about exclusives? Or completely announced projects that are multiplatform :P ?

STAR TROPICS!

Also from the EA interview (Madden) regarding Next Gen in general

GI:
On the flipside, is there any danger that you're starting things for the next-generation too early, and that you'll actually be behind when the next-generation hits since you're starting things already?

EA:
I think we're in so much better of a place today than we were in the last transition. Mainly because a lot of it is not a re-write, and the pieces that are re-writes, we're building a lot of those foundations now. These technologies that you're seeing are scaleable. Very scaleable.

Not that this is any big news, but for those still expecting a huge leap next gen, are going to be disappointed.

Those expecting better UI and quality of experience next gen will be very content.

Well, some people will think:

"Next Gen = Current gen HD systems
Current gen HD systems = PS360
Next Gen = PS360

If Wii U = Next Gen

Then Wii U = PS360

Wii U ON PAR with PS360 and not truly NEXT NEXT GEN (NEXT NEXT GEN = PS420)"

This demonstration is implacable, and Patcher will talk about it.

It will actually be a Star Fox Adventures sequel.

Also to put the issue of gens to rest.

This gen is this gen.
Next gen is next gen.
The gen after that is next next gen.
And the gen after that is next next next gen.

So by the time we get a proper sequel to Star Fox it will be next next next next next next next next gen.

But thats nothing special. The CPU had access to both pools of memory with the Wii.

While it's common knowledge that the CPU could access the 24 MB 1t-SRAM and 64 MB GDDR3 on Wii, I don't believe many people are aware that the CPU could actually access the 2 MB embedded framebuffer as well. I know I didn't until Blu brought it to my attention.

What does this mean for Wii U? The CPU will have access to a low latency scratchpad (pegged at 32 MB, possibly more, by reliable sources) in order to offset the higher latency of DDR3/GDDR5/whatever the external main memory ends up being.

This might also explain the lack of AA in some of the demos last year, even though they were 720p and Wii U should be capable of it. Not every developer may choose to use the 32 MB eDRAM as a frame buffer.

I don't think Retro is working on Star Fox. I don't see them hiring all those talented designers and coders from past FPS franchises (Crysis and I think Killzone as well) for a new Star Fox game. I'm guessing from them something like Metroid, a FPS, or Zelda.

I might actually buy Madden for Wii U, as long as they don't fuck it up like they did the Wii version.
Yeah yeah make your "that's the only way the Bucs will make the playoffs" comments ya (NFLGAF) punks

Still won't make the playoffs. Jnc <3 u bro

I'm past that, the doubters are always the same people that have some weird personal angst toward me because of my writing style or my teases, i can live with that, i'm not obsessed like them.

And i realize that whatever efforts i could do to "prove myself", there will still be doubters.

(+ ruining the surprise by spoiling the announces of games is different than revealing hardcore gamers/techies stuff)

Hey GP, you are thanked in the bannedsite for your summary post :)

NeoGAF reader GameplayWhore has taken on the herculean task of summarizing every single Wii U confirmed fact and rumor coming from the forum's most recent Wii U thread. The latest speculation thread hit its limit and a new one has been opened. While we've posted nearly all of these details and rumors, this is an absolutely amazing list that must have taken quite some time to put together. Get ready to dive into the biggest and most complete rumor round-up yet.

btw rawmeatcowboy is the beard guy ? Hey man, my beard is prettier than your, we'll do a contest some day.

The eDRAM used in the Power7 has a higher latency than the SRAM (hence why there's a small L2 SRAM cache for each core in addition to the L3 eDRAM), but the more recent PowerPC A2 just goes with eDRAM all the way, so it's possible that they've managed to get the latency down a bit further, although it doesn't seem to be mentioned in any of the documents I've read on the A2. The advantages are obviously the three-fold increase in density and lower power requirements.

On balance I'd say it's a good thing. The reduced size and power consumption means a (potentially) slightly higher-clocked chip, and I'd assume, given the lack of intermediate SRAM, that they've managed to get the eDRAM's latency down to reasonable levels.

Thanks for the input. I'll have to look more into the A2 for a point of reference.

Nope, you're right. And seriously, in this day and age a Star Fox game seems... redundant. I don't think the franchise is relevant anymore. On the other hand, some people would say that about Kid Icarus.

I think the franchise can be relevant, but the genre needs a fresh look. I mean, look at Sine Mora. It was basically Star Fox in a the vein of a side scrolling bullet hell (with its time twist... and a lot of adult language?)

Maybe not even just a fresh look but it needs to ditch the on rails gameplay completely. I am not saying ditch the space combat (or to become an adventure game like SFA) but something like Crimson Skies (xbox) would work (with an equally solid online system as well). I would pick that game up.

The problem is that it's really, really hard to fill a rail shooter with enough content to justify a big budget.

Kid Icarus was supposed to be a launch title and came out a year later. You can't do that with every game.

"Creative, highly thematic level concepts balanced with solid engaging gameplay"? Sounds like Retro is working with Nintendo SPD1 on the next Wario Ware.
