• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

what would make the WiiU your go-to console for multiplatform games?

Those sticks and the general layout just seem worse in every way. The 360 pad is probably the best pad I've used for 3D games (Classic Controller is probably best for 2D) and I don't look at the Pad and think it looks like the superior experience.

I can see that. It is really big and looks like an odd layout. Though I'd personally want to try it for myself before making a judgement, especially since many who've tried it have praised its ergonomics.

Several years of quality, market leading online service. It's simply not a competitor right now.

MS really got the jump on everyone with Live on the original Xbox.

No point, I own a PS3 and a 360, why buy a third system right before Nexgen, where a lot of the first year titles will be superior up ports anyway.

this is a very interesting premise.

let us asume the WiiU is able to run and receives all major 3rd party games when all three players have released their hardware.

AND thrid parties again go for the least common denominator, meaning WiiU is just powerful enough and 720/PS4 aren't THAT much powerful (hell, one of these two may be inbetween, not as powerful as the other one but more than WiiU) so third parties settle down for some middle ground and basically there is no " superior " port, just everything everywhere with enough eyecandy and performance. What then?

I know, is a lot of "what if" here but I don't take for granted that Sony and MS will exactly deliver what we think they'll deliver, meaning another traditional gaming controller with 50X the power of their competitor's hardware. In fact I'd bet money that they have taken notice of the tablet and WILL offer it, the competition isn't allowed to offer more than you, so MS will offer that and then some (kinect or whatever) so I believe tablet controls are here for good, unlike the wiimote.

Taking all "visions" and putting them on a tablet is all it really takes for me.

"Detective" vision.

"Predator vision.

"Instinct" vision.

"Eagle" vision.

Let me enjoy the graphics, and keep all your dumb filters in some optional place, thanks.

Having exclusives and great third-party games in one system is very appealing, but the real question is: how long will Wii U be your go-to console for multiplatform games?

Just bring me the 3rd party games and I'll main a Wii U. I told myself a couple of years ago that I'd like to only own ONE console the next time around. I'm hoping it's the Wii U and I just need those 3rd party games.

all the wiiu needs are ALL the 3rd party games, released on the exact same time as the other consoles, with NO graphic/image quality loss.

and a solid online framework. idgaf about bells and whistles like cross chat play whatever, i just want to be able to play online using my username, with my easily found friends, for free.

and a virtual console with purchases tied to an account, and not a system.

oh and for fucks sake, it should play movies!! dvd + blu ray please!

Well first you gotta sell me on it with exclusives and the fact that the online is on par to Xbox Live.

Then I need to convince friends to invest in it as well.

This generation I just don't see a full shift to another console for multi platforms. It'll be between PC/720/PS4 for me next gen, unless Wii U is on par with them hardware spec wise.

Being able to run the game without sacrificing any gameplay elements and content. This is assuming the game is not coming to PC.

Depends on the price of the system and how much the gap is between the Wii-U and the PS4/720. I'm not going to get a 720 at this point because I'm over paying for extra for Live, but I could be down for a PS4.

Still if I can get Metroid, Mario, Zelda etc... along with decent MP Games then it would save me money at least in the short term to stick with one console. This all depends on price and the difference between games on the difference systems.

Or this:

they just need to do this

but with its own battery/bluetooth so it doesn't need to plug into a wiimote. Also maybe ditch the octagonal gates on the sticks.

That's kind of the point. People are going to write off the WiiU no matter what because it doesn't have a controller that looks like the DualShock or the 360's controller.

1. Getting multi-platform games
2. Not being noticeably worse for multi-platform games.

Alternatively, the other two consoles being anti-used games.

I do my multiplatform gaming on PC, and no console will change that. However I'd pick up some multiplatform titles on Wii U if my friends got a Wii U and played some online multiplayer titles that I'd be interested in. My friends and I don't play the same type of games though so that probably won't happen. They're also notoriously poor/lazy and probably won't invest into next gen until many years in so it's a moot point.

If no PC option? Then I don't know. I can't make that decision until I see what PS4/Nextbox are going to offer, and at what cost.

  • If third parties release a game on the Wii U and it appeals to me I'll purchase it.
  • If third parties release a game on the ps3/ps4 and it appeals to me I'll purchase it.
  • If a ps4/720 port doesn't have any significant changes on the Wii U besides graphics and the padlet implementation is presented well I'll buy a Wii U version.
  • If the majority of my friends are playing an online centric third party game on the Wii U you know what version I'm getting.

People in this thread are acting like they've used the damn controller already. I'm sure there are a few people who have but don't act like you know how the controller is until you actually use it.

I for one would have to see what kinds of things developers add to the Wii-U versions of multiplatform games like touch screen functionality or whatever. The fact that I could play the game on the actual controller itself might also be a deciding factor because the TV I have my systems connected to is in use quite a bit. Although, if there is nothing worthwhile added, I will stick with getting my multiplatform games on 360 for the most part.

Gonna go against the grain and say keep the Upad, and actually do something interesting with it. I don't really care that much about graphics on WiiU considering I already have a decent PC that will most likely outperform it specs-wise (and the PS4 and 720 for that matter). So do something interesting with all of those random bells and whistles they're throwing on the controller.

Competent online system
No waggle
No ipad-lite controller
Analog sticks, not analog sliders
Third parties actually giving a shit about the console and not just dumping bad ports
A great achievement system that utilizes Nintendo's strengths (coins for Mii clothes etc)
Demos for every downloadable arcade title
Most of my friends from PSN/360 moving to Wii-U
No friend codes anywhere in sight

If the game is at least as good as its PS3/ 360 counterparts, then I'll go for the WiiU one. I simply like Nintendo more than I do the other 2. I will admit I'm slightly biased, but I really dislike the road both Sony and MS have taken. To this day, Nintendo is still the only company I see as caring for games. There's been a lot of ups and down for them, but right now Nintendo can do little wrong in my book, who knows what E3'll bring though.

Not to much would make me choose the WiiU as my go to console for multiplatform games as most of my friends likely won't be getting one as they are sony fans, but one thing that could push me towards that would be a good reward system (assuming the general experience is about on par with the other versions of the game).

For example the WiiU games would have achievements and as you unlock achievements you net club nintendo points to buy rewards with or you net nintendo points to buy dlc with. It's the type of reward I have wanted from Trophies or Achievements for a while where you make 1MSP for every 10 gamerscore you net (aka a game would offer 100MSP a value of what $1.25 something that isn't to much for MS to offer but enough to entice me to care about Achievements or Trophies) so if nintendo offers something of that nature while the other two don't the WiiU could end up my go to platform of choice for console games.

its just a dualshock with a screen
Right, but look above us in the thread. That screen scares the shit out of people.

Many gamers will say they want new, and different, and cool and new franchises and whatnot. That's not true. What they really want is new, prettier clothing on the same old drivel they played last year.

I mean, really... two posts below yours...

Ditch the Upad and have graphics on par with PS4/Xbox Next. Well make that graphics better than those systems.

Those sticks and the general layout just seem worse in every way. The 360 pad is probably the best pad I've used for 3D games (Classic Controller is probably best for 2D) and I don't look at the Pad and think it looks like the superior experience.

So you are basically condemning it purely on speculation?

And you would need to see it to be able to speculate.

except speculation isn't an absolute. you and others seem to have already made your decision on the controller despite praise from many people who have actually held it. it'd be more wise to hold judgment after seeing the final controller and actually HOLDING it in your hands.

For console exclusives, it probably just needs to be the console that interests me first and isn't significantly far behind the competition tech-wise.

I assume this isn't including games available on PC because I'm not sure what a console could do better.

-Actual analog sticks, not crappy circle pads.
-Comfortable control in general (not sold on the tablet at all).
-Great, free online service.
-Trophy/achievement system.
-To receive every multiplatform game released on time (no late ports), and the best versions of them too.
-No gimmick BS constantly shoved in my face for "exclusive content".

In other words, not going to happen.

Nothing.

I want the highest produced quality multiplatform port... and from nearly every account, the Wii-U will be behind in the next-gen power.
But that's ok, I play Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games mainly.

Somewhere close to the power of next MS and Sony consoles, A large install base, An optical disk able to hold enough data and support for a classic controller out of the box.

If it does all of these then developers can't ignore it.

Just make it easy to port and have a large install base and In the climate we have these days with hardly any exclusives and large budgets. Port happy developers would have to be afraid of money to not port their game.

I'd be happy if that happened. If the ports have smart ways of implementing the tablet and don't suffer too many comprimises compared to the versions on other consoles then I might consider only getting the WiiU next gen to supplement my PC gaming. I don't do a lot of online gaming on my consoles so I wouldn't care if the online infrastructure on the WiiU is worse.

Hmm...

-Online on par with Sony's offerings and party chat across games
-Mandatory use of the Wii-mote for any kind of shooter. I would prefer the tablet for games like Trauma Center and such
-No shoddy ports. The games should run at stable framerates and they should take advantage of the Wii U's extra oomph in some ways

Basically the same thing as the OP. My requirements are not sky high at all.
