EGM: Final Fantasy Versus XIII a No Show at E3

How funny. If Square ends up releasing this in the looming shadow of the next gen consoles like FFXII what will the impact be on sales? I remember when 12 hit I passed on it simply cause I was gearing up for the next consoles. How did 12 do comparatively to other FFs?

It depends on who you ask.

Just like every other game in the series.

My memory might not be accurate here, but didn't they do the same thing with FFIX? I think since they're mainline FF games, release time didn't matter and they did ok in terms of sales. I would go ahead and say that they probably can't afford to do that today considering the hits the FF name has taken with its recent duds, but Versus is super high profile and pretty highly anticipated. Assuming it actually does get released soon-ish, I think it'll do OK. (Unless it turns out to be yet another awful FF game again. Word will spread and fans with one foot already out the door will just bail.)

Square is just using v13 as a distraction. At TGS they're going to surprise everyone by showing off a completed FF15, with knights, chocobos, insane jesters, dragons, chain mail bikinis and stuff.

Totally.

Or a full-fledged, faithful and worthy PS3 FFVIIremake.

I want that.

It did just fine. FFXII sold better than FFXIII in Japan and North America and sold on par with it in Europe.

Actually, showing off FF12 HD at E3 would've been nice too.

I'd love to see their reasoning or explanation as to how a development time of more than half a decade is anything less than a clusterfuck. I want a guy (or a gal) in a suit, to sit down and just explain how they think they're going to come out even on this, let alone ahead.

While I'm sure it's an expensive game to make, since development for it didn't kick in until way after it was announced though, I don't think it's become quite the money-pit that some people seem to think it has.

Not having it at E3 is really just beyond embarrassing at this point though. I mean, are we gonna get FFXV before Versus XIII now too? I'd like to hear SE's idea of when's a "reasonable" time to give the game the spot-light despite the never-ending stream of sequels, other spin-offs and games down the line. If nothing else, I wish SE would make a blog for the game and have minor daily updates like Nintendo did with Super Smash for Wii.

What does this even mean? Nomura has had large roles on a lot of games this gen

No, Nomura has had a minor role on a lot of games this gen: "Creative Director" on TWEWY, "Director" (on games that were primarily directed on the ground by his "co-directors") on the KH handheld titles, and nothing more than lead character designs on FFXIII, Type-0, and XIII-2. KH3 has failed to happen this generation specifically because (unlike handheld games that can be created almost entirely by other people) KH3 is (in SE and Nomura's mind) only possible with Nomura's attention and he's had none to spare due to Versus.

I don't mean to belittle Nomura's accomplishments -- he's an extraordinarily talented producer and the best successor to the Gooch in terms of cultivating and overseeing new talent at Square-Enix. But his record since 2006 does not speak to someone who has been wildly productive in their primary purpose at the company.

Based on those it does not sound like the game has been in "full development" for 3 years

What else was the team doing in this time? It's possible that SE's position is that Versus only started any kind of real development in 2010, but that means that there are still years of team time that need to be accounted for. What seems most likely to me is that they don't consider all of that time to be "full development" in part because large portions of it were completely wasted (in the same way that almost two years of FFXIII's dev cycle were wasted accomplishing nothing) which is honestly even worse.

It's hilarious how this game's development is hurting both the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts franchises.

"Hurting" isn't even strong enough. Over the past six years Square-Enix has gone from having three 5m-selling franchises to having one, and this game is the single biggest cause.

I'd say it's more like this game (or rather the way this game is being handled) is a symptom of SE's root problems. It's hard for me to believe that FFXIII (and the other disappointing recent ones) turned out the way they did because of Versus XIII's existence. I'd guess that it's more of a management and quality control issue.

It clearly hasn't been a top priority, but by now Versus XIII has to have been in development for longer than it took to make FF I, II, III, IV, and V.

Most of the game probably started early development in 2009, as in where it could actually start running on an actual engine/PS3 hardware. Even though there was an 'in-engine' cutscene from December 2008, it was likely running off Crystal Tools and/or was a pre-recorded scene using in-game assets.

Fast forward to 2010...
Clothing designs from Roen are completed. The game's scenario is also finished at this time.
Voice casting began around August that year and in September the first public field gameplay footage was shown.

2011:
1st Production Department trailer in January - new CG and a bunch of new gameplay including various environments.

July - Nomura shows Famitsu some new location screenshots.

August - Trademark for Final Fantasy Versus XIII refiled.

September: Nomura reveals that parts of the Luminous Engine have been incorporated into the game's lighting technology.

2012:
A small update in January explaining that some cutscenes have been converted from real time to CG. News preparations nearly complete in March.

So yeah. Actual hard development probably has only been going on for a few years at most.

Does SE have any independent PR events announced that they throw themselves to showcase their upcoming titles? If one is not too far off from E3 then maybe Versus will be shown then?

I was listening to some podcasts yesterday and I heard a story about a Square Enix artist that worked on a rock for two weeks. The rock was to be in a two second part of a cut scene. She just kept working on it and working on it because nobody had given her a new assignment.

The art asset team on XIII spent like two years building unneeded assets for the game.

WHAT THE HELL IS WADA DOING?

Wada is letting all the senior producers and directors whose talent built the company in the 1990s and early 2000s do what they were doing before (i.e. propose, architect, and implement projects of their choice) without recognizing that said strategy neither scales well to modern console development nor works well with the large portion of SE's "talent" whose best years are long behind them.

The series was never bigger than FF to begin with

KH was quite a bit larger than FF in the US last generation and put up almost identical worldwide numbers.

If I was SE I would have just rebranded it as FF15

This is a terrible idea because of how much it completely reeks of desperation.

Exactly. This is why the 'they only just started' excuse doesn't stack up.

I initially typed 'destroying' but I thought people might think that was a bit extreme.
Today marks the 6 year anniversary of the announcement exactly btw. E3 was in May that year.
Just incredible, really.

The sad thing about this is that we are being denied a Shimomura soundtrack. :I
I always waited patiently for this..... calming every disappointed fan in the past years, finding excuses for the delays.

But now.... SCREW THIS!

I thought this will be release a year after FFXIII..... then I said a year isn't enough so maybe Dec 2011 for JP and Spring 2012 for NA, but then FFXIII-2 happened and I said of course they don't want to take the spotlight from this game so maybe a year after it.

BUT NOW, I don't think it will be released this holiday season in Japan and earlier next year for NA \ EU...... F**K THIS!

How long it's going to take them to show the game at E3?

If you want to release the game late 2013 or even earlier 2014 fine by me.... I SWEAR IT'S FINE BY ME, but at less show a freaking new footage from time to time to calm us a little.

you can't keep doing this to your fans!!!!!

I'M sooooo angry and pissed off that in the FIRST TIME I stopped caring about the game.

Screw you.... release this whenever you are going to release it, I'M DONE HYPING MYSELF FOR IT.

Like the other thread in which the game gets roasted, I think it's inexcusable for this game to be so silent. Now I know it makes for great drama and awesomeness for the potential reveals but this game has gone too dark for too long. And it's taking forever to just get up to speed. I know the game wasn't started on the day of announcement but it was not a smart move to announce a game in which production has been slow, to put it nicely.

I've lost a lot of interest in the game due to the handling of media and general info. Why can't these Japanese companies do what western devs are doing with the hype train videos and dev diaries? I know some are doing it but they are outclassed by the west in that regard.

This game has to have become FFXV. It seems to major not to be and if it isnt, then the next real mainline game will be just as late as 13 was into the generation.

Would be funny if it ended up being a PS4 title seeing as that system is only a couple years away. Game will probably end up not being very good anyways. Always one or two really big vapor ware games each gen. This is one of them.

No. No. No. No.

XV has to be a return to the 4/6/9/12 Knights meet Technology stuff, and feature characters that are both old enough to vote, and who aren't razor thin or wearing a fuckton of belts. People will have beards, and they'll laugh while punching stuff.

Believe!

I always like how these are the FF sterotypes and then the games that are listed as not following them.

I think it's safe to say this games has gone through development hell at least once. The way square is handling this game is very reminiscent of MG:Rising, the public had no idea the developers hit a roadblock and was so close to being cancelled.

You mean like when people try to turn every ff-related thread into some kind of long running argument to support their own concepts of what games are superior by attaching deeper meaning to other peoples preferences? Yeah, that's always a hoot.

Dear Square-Enix,

What the hell are you doing with your time?

Sincerely,
A former fan
