Fighterpedia takes on the question of whether Smash Bros. is a fighting game.

Why not?

It maybe not Pure, but it is a cousin of it

I consider it

Same with PASBR that is coming

I've always seen the "Smash bros is not a fighting game" a sony/ms fanboy thing than an actual conversation about the genre. Who out there seriously cares?

Next they should tackle the burning question on everybody's minds: Is Halo a first person shooter? After that they can figure out if Gran Turismo is a driving game.

Some use the distinction in order to delegitimize and mock the competitive smash community.

It's a game of a bunch of Nintendo characters fighting each other. Not sure what else you need to qualify as a fighting game.

A video was created for it, so some out there really want to finally put it at/to rest

Does EVO do SSMB tourney?

But there aren't any healthbars or something! It has items and is fun, and that makes it a party game! You need a 30 move long list with slight variations of kicks and punches like Tekken for it to be a fighting game unless you're Capcom.

Actually, I would love for Capcom to make a Smash Bros style game and call it their newest fighting game. SRK would just die in its loathing.

It's a game where people fight each other to win. Sounds like a fighting game to me.

I guess Grand Theft Auto is a racing game since you can race the NPCs.

Of course Portal is a first person shooter since you shoot portals in first person.

And River City Ransom must be a fighting game since you fight thugs.

smash is a beat'em up

Back when I still had the GameCube and PS2 as the ringmasters of the loungeroom, the circle of friends I tagged with organised many nights throughout the calendar year where we got together and affectionately called them "Drunken Fighter nights".

These consisted of playing all the fighters I had under the roof with copious amounts of alcohol before we dropped off like flies, usually while trying to play Pro Evo Soccer. We'd easily go from fighting against one another in Capcom vs SNK 2 to tag-teaming like true brothers in Smash Bros. Melee. It didn't phase us then and I am sure it wouldn't phase any of us now. It's probably worthwhile to mention that this was a group of guys who spent too much money at the arcades playing King of Fighters and Virtua Fighter in their teens.

People need to let the Smash Bros. debate go.

I told you guys. I'm not crazy. People actually make the argument that smash isn't a fighting game!

The fact there are people out there who get offended by the existence of Smash Bros makes me sad.

Plus I don't get the fighting game community at all when stuff like this comes up.

uhm, isn't this also a term used for fighting games like street fighter?
No.

No.
i'm not saying it's the right term, though i've seen it used for a long time now, even in old gaming mags.

edit: ah, i knew i wasn't crazy. from wiki:

"During the 1980s publications used the terms "fighting game" and "beat 'em up" interchangeably"

Calling it beat 'em up isn't that crazy considering the adventure modes in Melee and Brawl. It also makes some interesting situations arise: do we consider Guardian Heroes a fighting game because of its versus mode?

that's part of the issue in the first place: games can fit into more than one genre.

Yeah, because is not, Smash is a beat´em up / party game.

It´s not a derogative distinction though.

Also this is like beating on a 20 years old corpse.

Games like Rampage and battletoads are beat 'em ups. Smash is a fighting game.

If Rampage and Battletoads had player vs player on a single screen they would be more like Smash than any fighting game.

Guardian Heroes has pvp, guess what game it resembles more: Smash, or King of Fighters?

Would you say Guardian Heroes is a Fighting game?

The way I see it:

Are there a variety of characters (each with their own builds or clones) in the roster?
Are there multiple stages to select?
Are there combos, special moves, whatever?
Are there KOs and timeouts?

If all of the above have been answered with a yes, it's a fighter.

sure why not?

exactly.

I think some of the backlash is from some casual players who continue to bring up the no items, fox only, final destination crap painting all hardcore players as people who only want to play the games in the most boring way possible and some hardcore players poking with the stick saying that the randomness shouldnt be in the game ( I dont know how anyone defends tripping). Then there are the sidelines trying to stir shit poking both sides.

Seriously though, play the game however you want, who gives a shit.

I've seriously had this debate with OutlawAuron before... I don't see how anyone with any type of fighting game skill could not see the depth in the gameplay for all three Smash Bros games.

It's by far my favorite fighting game and it, Street Fighter II, and Naruto UNS are the only fighting games I learn the deeper techniques for.

+1 for "its a fighting game".

People don't want to accept it cause its different.

Can't we all just get along?

good video.

I love how people in this thread are claiming otherwise. Did you not watch the video? A game does not have to be a Street Fighter clone to be considered a fighting game.

Jesus fuck, some people seriously can't let this topic die.

They did, but the Smash Community in all their whiny glory, ruined things by constantly complaining about (some) items being allowed. Instead of being happy that Smash was being showcased, they ended up killing it.

It's one of the reasons why I'm fucking done with the community as a whole. The majority of players are a bunch of hypocritical whiny fucks that don't give a shit about expanding the scene at all, and complain when things don't go their way.
Yes, I'm aware one could potentially make this argument about fighting games and players NOW, but I'm talking about BEFORE such things as Cross Assault and the like.
The MLG Incident and the drama that was created afterwards is the perfect god damned example.

I wish I could go back in time to when I cared about competitive Smash, slap Past Beef in the face, and tell him to concentrate on Capcom vs. SNK 2 instead.

Small Arms for XBLA is my faverote fighting game of all time

Sure, okay, let's go with that.

so because they wanted the ruleset to be more competitive they were whiny fucks?
