Fuckin hell. You guys are gonna analyze every damn frame and then reveal its grand importance.

I'm not returning here.

I swear, no movie thread on this board is safe from either spoilers, fanboy craziness or box office arguments.

Whoever made the trailer enabled this behavior. When you think about it, it's really not anyone's fault for hyper-analyzing them if they're right there to hyper-analyze.

I said a few weeks back that assholes would post those gifs even when there are people actively saying they are avoiding the newest promo materials.

We'll know the full story within the next couple weeks anyways, but here's how I think the movie will play out :)

ACT 1 (minor spoilers, pretty much spelled out in the trailers. 10% speculation and nonsense)

Synopsis: Weyland is competing with Yutani. They collaborate with each other (look at their respective viral facebook pages) but are not merged yet. Film is set 30 years before ALIEN according to Etnertainment Weekly.

Elizabeth Shaw and Holloway connect the archeological cave paintings that lead them to form a star map. Weyland, interested in exploring new frontiers and finding new life in the universe (to exploit), decides to take a shot at this and sends the Prometheus research vessel out into space, after the Charlize briefing.

Other than Shaw and Holloway, the two outcasts, you have Charlize who runs the ship. Mr. Weyland is played by Guy Pearce and is Charlize's father or mentor, he is not on board the Prometheus vessel, otherwise he would running the ship. You also have Janek who owns and pilots the ship, the Company android David, and five other shipmates. Charlize's Company interests will conflict with the rest of the crew, and Janek will be the wise old guy type.

On the way to their destination, the crew gets to know each other, such as the scene where David is talking to Holloway next to a pool table. Also, it is shown that Shaw and Holloway have an intimate relationship. The ship finds Zeta 2 Reticuli as X marks the spot, lands, and sees dirt "crop circles". When they follow the circles on this igneous unstable rock (although not yet as molten as it was in Alien and Aliens), it leads to a mountain containing the space jockey ship. They go inside and find a chamber with the big head and alien urns. Right before or after, they send their red ball lifeform scanners out.

ACT 2 (don't read past this point if you want to avoid spoilers. a lot of this is taken from a theatre impression. 80% speculation and nonsense)

Janek detects a lifeform. It is the lone space jockey (huge 8-foot tall bald humanoid creature), the only one of his race alive. After one of the humans activating something in the urn room, an alien pops out of one of the urns and kills one of the 5 generic shipmates. These aliens are similar, but not the same xenomorphs from the other films. The parasite form is snake-like. They do have acid for blood as well, though. Holloway gets impregnated here (but not face-melted like the other guy). Some of the crew retreats back to the Prometheus with one of the urns for study (Shaw definitely goes back), some get trapped inside or lost or decide to stay there (namely David). Here the story is split into two for a while;

PROMETHEUS: Shaw and Holloway have sex or simply kiss. Shaw is impregnated now too as a result (these xenomorphs are small worm-like parasites). Janek says they should leave asap but Shaw wants to press on out of curiosity. She reminisces about her childhood and father, which has something to do about her calling to exploration. Holloway experiences a painful death with a tentacle creature possibly coming out of him. The urn they took on board the Prometheus explodes and now more parasites are roaming about. All hell breaks loose.

SPACE JOCKEY SHIP: The space jockey uses mind control to gain control of the crew members left behind. It doesn't work on David, who discusses humanity with the Space Jockey. The Space Jockey either gets infected by a parasite or heads to the Prometheus to kill the humans. There is a small skirmish in the loading bay where the vehicles come out. Multiple crew members are killed. David, fascinated by the parasite, is determined to save the Prometheus by warning the crew and telling them the situation (that the Jockey or parasite plans to go to Earth). Charlize tries to stop David, possibly destroying him.

ACT 3 (this is all jumbled up, completely unsure how this will play out. 99% speculation and nonsense)

- Shaw is resolute now that she must destroy the ship. She evades the tentacle creature/space jockey and parasites.
- The cloud coming at the Prometheus in the trailers is either natural or a result of the space jockey ship taking off to Earth.
- Janek rams the Prometheus into the ship making it derelict. The Prometheus is destroyed.
- Shaw escapes in a small silver escape pod. You can spot it in one of the trailers. From here she crash lands back on to the planet from the debris.
- With no way of getting off world, Shaw goes into the now derelict ship
- Either she gets into the space jockey ship, and gets into a space jockey engineer suit, to send an sos or the space jockey survives the crash, kills Shaw, and maliciously sends an sos out as a trap.
- At some point in the film, the tentacle creature (assuming it's not the infected space jockey) or parasite change into their ALIEN franchise form. It finally bursts out of Shaw or the space jockey.

Saw the 3D trailer for this yesterday. I have to say it was the most impressive 3D I've seen yet!

The picture only felt like it had a slight depth but I'd describe it as 'natural depth'. Nothing pops out at you but the effect is immediate and pulls you closer to the action. I have no doubt that after a few minutes you will forget you're watching the movie in 3D, and you'll be immersed in the film.

edit: Also, anyone getting Cinefex's next issue? They're leading on Prometheus. Bet the cover will be gorgeous.

I went to watch the Avengers in 3D yesterday and got to see the Prometheus trailer in 3D, simply awesome. The HUD and other stuff just popped the right amount. Can't wait to see aliens and shit in 3D.

Did anyone ask Damon if the trailers really are the spoilfest we think it is? I don't have Twitter, otherwise I'd do it myself.

There is a recent interview with him on /FILM about exactly that. I'm on my phone though.

He basically says that yes, he wishes they didn't have to show off what they have already, but it's unavoidable in marketing your film today.

quick question since i was pissed at Avengers ONLY being available in 3D in my country:

Will Prometheus ONLY be 3D? (Not even sure about this but isn't it SHOT in 3D?)

thanks... if it follows the current trend, it will have NO 2D showings... :(

oh well there's always BluRay

But unlike The Avengers, not only was this shot in 3D, Ridley Scott designed everything around the production around it being displayed in 3D. So unless your theatre has shitty projection practices or you have genuine eye strain/problems, you don't have anything to worry about regarding the quality of the 3D in Prometheus.

Maybe he can't see 3D? I don't have stereoscopic vision so I can't see in 3D but I'm sure there will be theaters showing the 2D version here.

Unless the Gafer above can't see 3D or finds it headache-inducing, this hate against 3D is getting seriously old. This is the fault of all those crappy 3D conversions (apart from Titanic), and crappy content, therefore, people (not all of them thank god but quite a few) believe that 3D is crap and needs to disappear.

I have this to say, SEE for yourself good content (3D wise before someone makes any nasty comments), such as Avatar, Hugo, or RE Afterlife (movie is crap yes). Those movies lose something when seen in 2D. And when the movie is totally thought out in 3D, it is worth it. For the dimness, blame your fucking theater.

And for those who are hoping that 3D will die a slow and painful death, you're in for a disappointment, 3D is here to stay for a long, long time. I'll bet that Prometheus, Spidey (which everyone says is mind blowing in 3D (the trailers of course) ), and The Hobbit will shut up quite a few naysayers. And when HFR is up and going, the headaches, judder complaints and whatnot will go away, and it will be the best thing ever.

Oh and 3D is awesome in videogames as well, just try some 3D vision one of these days....

Think about the two good 3D films so far. Avatar and Hugo. Both shot with 3D cameras, both of masterful directors at getting a shot. Scott is as good as them, if not better at making gorgeous looking films. Kingdom of Heaven has some of the best use of Artwork, CG, and sets still. But all accounts, the 3D trailer is jaw dropping. I don't think you need to worry about this one. This will be my first 3D film still Avatar. Might I add Imax too ^_^

yeah i guess Avatar 3D was pretty good, though my main criticism with 3D is not the fact that not enough things pop out at you, but that i feel the contrast is off/movies seem darker than their 2D counterparts and that i do get more eyestrain than with 2D movies as well :(

add to that the fact that 3D is more expensive in SPITE of those 2 reasons and that in some places (like here) you are being FORCED to watch in 3D since they won't show the other version and they're making it pretty damn easy to go from a neutral attitude towards 3D to a hater or something in between :(

Cardboard cut-outs is quality 3D?

I will not waste my time and money seeing something in 3D. Prometheus 2D for the win.

Its completely rational to dislike 3D. It adds pretty hefty price hike(33% at my theater for new movies, and 75% at the cheap theater). Most theaters aren't going to replace bulbs to reduce how dim the glasses make the movie look. Post conversions are always going to be shit. The only successful attempts have been from God tier directors.

And for people like me who wear glasses and don't have the best eyes.... its going to be a problem for many more years.

But I really do want to see this. Alien is one of my favorite movies of all time and I think Scott is the best Hollywood Director working(I do switch between him and Martin). Even films that don't review as well like Matchstick Men or A Good Year. I still ended up enjoying. And when you give him the budget like Black Hawk Down or Kingdom of Heaven. I always loving it.

Which reminds me, what the fuck was Robin Hood's problem. 220mil, and it looked like shit still.

I'm really surprised Ridley has taken to 3D as well as he as. Saying stuff like he wants to make every film in 3D and that he wishes he made Gladiator in 3D. Of course, having watched the Prometheus trailer in 3D I sort of get it now - it really looked brilliant. Piranha 3DD, despite being filmed in 3D, it really added nothing to the movie and somehow made a terrible movie worse. Just goes to show that 3D quality depends on the talent involved.

Scott is also coming up to the most interesting few years of his career since, well, Blade Runner. He's got Prometheus, The Councilor then maybe the new Blade Runner project and he's also been circling a Gertrude Bell biopic for a while now. All these projects fascinate me. Not to mention that he seems up for a Prometheus sequel if it does well.

I'm really surprised Ridley has taken to 3D as well as he as.

He's a very visual director, there's nothing surprising about his decision. He wants to as all the tools at his disposal to get the visual effect he wants. It's like saying you don't really need to use all the different camera lenses out there, or you should only use this kind of color timing, or don't use extreme close-ups, etc. Let the artist make the art they want to make. You are free not to like their approach but don't say it's shit because it's not your preference.

I can't tell if your posts are jokes or real spoilers.

I like the sound of 17.

Well the only thing I know is that from a picture some guy took the thing that explodes is a
human head or a humanoid head ( aka SJ )
so I don't know which it is until the movie is out. It has been discussed on several Alien forums about it

Went over to Best Buy and they had the Alien(1-4) BluRays on sale for 9.99, with 10$ in movie cash. So you can get Alien for free and 10$ towards your Prometheus Imax viewing. ^_^

I'm watching the heat game and saw a commercial for prometheus. It was so nice to hear and see Rated R at the end.

I saw that commercial, it was very Idris Elba heavy.

Wait what? How do you get it for free AND 10$ toward's Prom?

Is this new?

edit: nevermind. sorreh
Not new, but last time the jockey was shown opening/closing the blue star map was not on. Unfinished effects shot before?

Edit: wouldn't be the first time shots were shown differently in different spots. Blue blood vs red, people on fire vs not on fire etc
