Nvidia Kepler - Geforce GTX680 Thread - Now with reviews

Yea, coming fom a 5850. I might try a fresh windows install, I have my os on my ssd by itself anyway.

Do you guys think it would be better(faster) to rma it for a replacement from newegg or evga?

I ended up cancelling the TigerDirect.ca order I had and picked up a Gigabyte GTX 670 from a Canada Computers store. Heres a quick Heaven bench, temps didnt go above 67 degrees C either :D

Can you rerun the benchmark with Anisotropy at 4x and Tessellation at Normal. Have you tried overclocking the thing yet?

Haven't overclocked yet, still at factory settings. My CPU is overclocked to 3.6 ghz though, but the heaven bench lists it at 2.93 ghz. Will run the bench again when i get some time tomorrow

Received my GTX690 in the evening yesterday.
I haven't had a chance to install it yet. (weekend with family). But wow... some excellent craftsmanship from nVIDIA.

:P I'm crazy enough that I'd buy one if I see it for MSRP on amazon... otherwise I'll be happy with a GTX 670... I'm still waiting on ASUS even though I doubt it'll make more than maybe 1 or 2% difference... might break down and get a gigabyte if I see it back in stock.

I see plenty of Galaxy brands in stock. If you're not planning on OC to make use of the triple-fan, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Once I convince myself the 670 is more bang for my buck than a 570 or 560Ti, that's probably the only brand I"ll be able to find. :P

Uh oh...currently only three brands of 670 in stock on newegg...Galaxy, Zotac, and MSI...two of then scrub brands. None of them great brands.

So I've read in a few places that GK 104 only supports 3-way SLI. I wonder how much better performance he'll get if that's fixed in a driver update

Huh? I'm running 4x EVGA GTX 680s...my score is in that thread I linked to above...(last 1-3 pages, not sure if the overall high score has been updated in a long while)...I'm guessing even the 670 will do 4-way.

For the 690 I meant. It wasn't an official source, just a mention on OCN and a comment by someone in the anandtech review. No idea of it's validity, but since I saw it twice I thought I might bring it up.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, 680 and 690 for sure, obviously. Pretty sure the 670. Although maybe Nvidia blocks it in the BIOs or something.

EDIT: huh, guess it's a future driver item: http://www.pcper.com/news/Graphics-Cards/GTX-670-and-Case-Missing-and-Returning-4-Way-SLI-Support.

The latest v301.34 driver for GTX690 = poor driver...improper shutdown/hanging.
v301.33 seems better for 690. It fixes shutdown and hanging.
I hope nVIDIA releases a proper WHQL driver soon.

Just had a quick round of BF3
I'm loving it. Played using Adaptive Vsync and for some reason I never once saw anything lower than 60 fps. Perhaps, I was too focused on actual gameplay. :p This is at 2560x1600. It makes BF3 so buttery smooth.

Some pics before I hit the road.
Sorry for the horrible photo quality. (Used iPhone 4)

Nice case! Is that color custom?

No 4-way does work as I see all of my GPU actively running. Scaling from 3-4way is not that great however which drivers will help. But 4-way does work with 690's as it does with 680's they just need to work on drivers to improve scaling.

Hey guys...can you run your Unigine at full settings. The majority of people on the majority of sites run this at full tilt at 1080p..so full tess, 8xaa etc. It makes it easier for everyone to know how they are doing if everyone uses the same settings.

How many times do we have to let that run in order to get a final result? I got impatient in the 4th run ...

lol..there is a tab at the upper left of the screen as it is running that says "Benchmark". You hit that and it re-loads and it starts at the beginning. It will say Benchmarking in white across the middle of the screen. There will also be a box in the lower right corner showing what stage it is at and the FPS and some other information. There are 26 stages I beleive. Once the run is done you will get that screen.

My god man, you need to undervolt that CPU, don't need that much juice for 4.8 :P

Is a 670 worth it if you dont plan on using anything higher than 1080p?

I'm using a 5850 right now and get pretty decent performance in 1080p, but I definitely think it's worth the upgrade. Of course, the answer depends on your comparison point and your budget . . .

I just wish I could find one of the damn versions that I want (probably either the ASUS or the Gigabyte Windforce).

Yes I have, I even posted about it in the last page or 2.

I've been watching this thread like a hawk (or thought I was) and missed it completely.

Damnit, I'm torn about getting this vs. waiting for the ASUS TOP to show up somewhere . . .

A week ago a new GPU wasn't even on my radar -- now I'm scouring the net like a lunatic.

Yes, I do, unfortunately. :(

My idea of a "stable OC" is different than most though...I make my CPUs go through IntelBurnTest (LinPack) Maximum (which takes several hours) successfully. Temps are fine. Maxes at 90C maximum (Sandy Bridge TJunction is 98C - haven't been able to find Sandy Bridge E's). But 75C in typical use (i.e. BF3 MP).

Well i'm not really in a hurry to get a new card so i'll give the Asus about 2 more weeks. Lets hope its coming out next week. MSI sure is slacking, wonder why they haven't made a Twin Frozr yet.

Stability is easy to reach, I find the problem is finding that sweet spot of stability versus not pumping a massive amount of volt through your CPU and creating a lot of unnecessary heat is the tough but fun part of overclocking. My 3930k at 4.7 was also doing 1.4xx something at auto voltages but with a bit of fine tuning got it down to 1.312 during a Prime test which I'd say is very fair - Gives me a temp of around 70-75* during peaks, gaming is around 50-65 depending on CPU use of course and it'll idle at around 26-30 on average and some cores sees 21-22*. ( This is with low RPM connectors and all fans set to 'Silent' mode, so temps could probably be even better )

So you should definitely look into undervolting that baby, really pays off :)

New bench below. Changed 4xMSAA to 8xMSAA. I don't know, I never use 8xMSAA in games anyways so I didn't see the point. For reference heres my specs:

Core i7 940 overclocked to 3.6ghz
6 GB OCZ RAM in triple channel
EVGA X58 FTW3 motherboard
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 OC (still at whatever factory settings Gigabyte OCs to)
120 GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD
Corsair HX650 PSU

Ha. Tweaking never stops...but, IMO Prime95 is not a valid OC verification tool. That's the difference - your stability versus mine. LinPack/IntelBurnTest will find problems Prime95 cannot.

Like I said, TJunction is 95 C on Sandy Bridge, so I'm well within the thermal profile for the processor. There's no problem with this setup other than people that are scared of voltage. It's heat that is the problem. And like I said, I'm OK there. If anything, I'll keep going up. Nothing wrong with 1.5v. I can run at 5.0 GHz plus but it doesn't pass LinPack/IntelBurnTest.

Sure, if that's your pleasure - I would never have peace of mind with those kind of numbers :)

So here's a new question for you guys. I have an old EVGA GeForce GTS 250 kicking around from an old build that I'm not using. I can pop that into my machine with the GTX 670 and use the GTS 250 as a PhysX card, right? Do I need one of thse special SLI bridges to do it? And is my 650w PSU enough to do it?

Playwares.com did a 690 quad-SLI benchmark/review.

http://www.playwares.com/xe/23165505 (it's Korean)

690 SLI brings ~25% performance improvement over a single 690 across the board at 2560x1600 resolution.

Frankly speaking, I was hoping for more efficient quad-SLI scaling this generation. :( Not sure if future driver update will result in further efficiency.

Of course they will, Nvidia has only released 1 WHQL driver afaik since the release of Kepler and we've just reached 2 Beta drivers. Sure they are working their butts off to improve Kepler overall, Nvidia has a great track record in my memory of doing some great improvements.
