Rumor: New Wii U controller (analog sticks)?

God damn that thing is huge and ugly as fuck. So not sexy. I think they need sexiness for casual success though. I really do hope there will be some makeovers. That thing looks like...I don't know...like a fucking giant 2012 game gear or so.
OOOooh noooooooo... so much hate :(

Take something away then give it back and be hailed as heroes. Its like Nintendo have built an entire business model on pavlovian conditioning their most faithful into a constant state of frenzy.

It doesnt help I have this exact device's form factor sans stylus in the PS Vita, and thats executed already on an entirely sexier level with added multi-touch and back touch functionality.

I still struggle to believe this is something my eyes were treated to last E3 in reality:

It felt like I was losing my mind.

Wii U controller has a bigger screen and is probably more comfortable to hold for long periods of time on account of it not being a handheld that cramps your hands because it was designed to fit into a pocket.

But Vita looks prettier, so it wins!

By the way, is there any technical reason there has to be a half-inch of space all around the screen? It seems they could shave a 3/4 of an inch by moving the d-pad and buttons closer to that screen.

I think you want to keep the buttons as far as possible from the screen to avoid accidentally touching that screen.

Anyway, new controller looks much better now with those proper sticks.

About the right analog stick placement over the buttons. Now that it's no longer a slide pad, the position makes more sense. I thought one of the big deals with the slide pad is that it would present less of a barrier for the hands/fingers reaching over the screen. If the sticks are now going to present extra height, they'd be more of an obstruction placed the traditional way. Imagine using a Classic Controller and moving your thumb from the face buttons to the area between the analog sticks.

Yeah. Weren't there some issues on the PSP with the Square button?

Should we? If they end up like the PS3 sticks (which suck ass) we should be weeping instead of rejoicing. Being like 360 sticks is acceptable, however.

The D-pad of the dualshock sucks too... the only good d-pad on a Sony console is the Vita one.

Stay classy GAF

I agree that Vita d-pad is the best one I've ever seen but when strictly speaking about home console d-pads, PS3 is definitely the best of the bunch. PS3 analog sticks feels just like 360 ones, I just prefer the 360 one because they are concave.

I've been trying to decipher it.

But it just reads like a fever dream to me.

Well... I have to admit the Vita screen is purty.

Yeaaah... no.

Being the best of the bunch doesn't mean being good... and if we count the Classic Controller then it isn't even the best this gen.

Really? Looks preety unimpressive for a 2012 device. New ipad, Vita, iphones, etc. this is as impressive as the 3DS screen which is horrid.
Yeah, I guess that makes the iPad 2 screen absolutely terrible. I mean, how can people even stand to look at that shit in 2012? It gives you eye cancer!

I think I'm going to get one at launch. I kind of regret selling my Wii, Metroid Trilogy, SMG 1&2, Boom Blox, Wii Sports, S&P 2, so much goodness in the back catalogue. Any chance we'll see any upgrades besides the inherent HDMI bonus? I'm not expecting Dolphin stuff. Also, will it play GC games?

The sticks have a wildly different material, deadzone and resistance, it's absurd to say they feel the same. Not just absurd, but factually wrong.

Nope, they still feel the same way to me, other than 360 being superior for the concave design. I do agree that dualshock has slightly less resistance but that's not always a bad thing.

No upscaling of any kind for Wii stuff and no GC compatibility.

Sorry but i have an iPad 2 and it really isnt sharp at all. Its not bad but not impressive. The Wii U controller doesnt look impressive either. Impressive is the 4s, iPad 3, Vita, etc.

Not lying, I couldn't go back to the iPad 2 screen after the new iPad's.

Not saying it's bad but I never want to look at another non high-PPI screen on a smartphone/tablet ever again.

Well sure, if they feel the same to you there's no arguing there :) Just saying that they aren't the same at all :P

Luckily, the Wii U screen is better than the iPad2 screen. And retina displays or the Vita OLED aren't all that impressive anymore once you realize that demanding content is often rendered at lower resolutions, leading to really horrible image quality.

I wonder why it can't upscale wii games. That's a shame

Because the amount of power required to pull of Dolphin stuff would not be found in the Wii U. The DOlphin method is of course just brute force, and I don't know if a emulator could be written.

Someone on here wrote a explanation as to why we won't be getting HD upscaling, and why it was impossible for the Wii U to pull it off. I can't seem to find it, but if someone knows where, a link would be appriciated.

According to the visible copper plates, it'll charge on a dock.

It can charge on a dock or via an AC adapter (which seems to be the same as the DSi/3DS).

Well, the real reason we won't see Dolphin effects on the Wii U is because you would need a new emulator for each game. And that just isn't happening.
They could probably do a very basic upscaling (and it might do that anyway, we haven't seen), but it won't actually improve the look of the game like Dolphin does.

Umm I'm still impressed by retina and OLED. The UPad atm hasnt impressed me from what I have seen.

It's not about power, it's about compatibility. Unless you're fine with another Xbox360 situation where some games almost work and the rest doesn't work at all, software emulation simply isn't the way to go.
