Their mirror servers have been down for me since the patch released. So many people!

And what percentage of that 1,000,000 characters are now dead? And how many people have died per minute/hour, with a given average rate of life around 28 minutes?

Things I want to know but do not wish to expend energy figuring out.

One Million Characters does not equal to one million users. Each of your lives is a character.

Why are dead characters limiting the creation of new ones is not clear to me.


Edit: Where does one find the new hotfix? All the download servers I'm aware are dead.

The central server that they are running on can handle 10 000 unique players at once, so we've heard. It (or the code that directed players to it) may have also had an arbitrary limit of how many characters it could handle.

Clearly this is pure speculation.
 
Went online after a long time just to see the neogaf server. Found it, I think. But the ping was too high (was showing 2500) so I just went to some EU server instead. It was SO dark and zombies everywhere (I am, for some reason, near Elektrozavodsk, even though I was not there before - so even though the total zombie numbers were betwen 100 and 200, they seemed to be all around). I decided it would be better to play in daytime for some time, so I tried some random low-ping US server. Also dark but with starry sky. So I quit. One thing I noticed was that the servers were much easier to get into compared to my last sessions.

Fake edit: Steam integration with news is awesome. Click on ARMA2:OA and the most recent news is about 1.5.8 for DayZ.

Spent another 1-2 hours scavenging again, still no matches! I thought the rarity of them was lowered? Temperature is reaching 30, I'm getting tired of being unable to aim my gun! Gotta find dem fire sticks!

So I spose the best way to regain blood by yourself (or only way) is to cut up an animal and cook it with matches? I've only seen one cow awhile back. Is there a good place for animals?
 
just bought ArmA II: CO from Amazon....now I just have to wait for it to download....uhhgg. Cant wait to get it up and running though
 
Managed to make it to the North-East airfield by myself. Found an M4+ACOG in a deer stand. Promptly lost it due to the backback glitch. (Damn it!) On the plus side, I haven't seen any 5.56 ammo, so I guess I wouldn't have used it anyways. I managed to clear the airfield but burned through almost all of my ammunition, and the only loot was a pair of binoculars and smoke grenades. I already have binoculars. So pissed right now.

I'm going to backtrack and head South towards the spawns. I should have enough provisions for the trek as long as I avoid any drawn out combat. Need to try and hit a few of the easy spots for some ammo. This is almost impossible to play solo, but everyone seems to be hanging around Electro and Cherno. What I would give for a helo ride right now.
 
There was some instant karma retribution going on yesterday.

Me and my friend are looking at a couple of deer stands when he notices someone sneaking up on us and he fires at him with his AK. He goes down and we go to loot them. I loot first and i get his m4 with 5 mags and 6 revolver mags for my revolver. Also map, watch and binoculars. My friend gets his pack and the server immediately stops responding.

Get in again all my loot is gone :(. Fortunately my friend still has the new pack and it has 4 more revolver mags. We spot another guy (bandit) across the plain cooking. We sneak up on him, kill him and i start to loot. Scoped Ak with 6 mags , night vision goggles , map , cooked meat. My friend gets his blood packs. Server dies again.

I mean come on.. Decided to stop trying for the night since every server had troubles at the time.

Also i really hope they fix night. Its laughable that people think thats realistic. All it does is prevent me most of the time to play in EU servers. We just go to US ones but the desynch going on in some of them isn't so nice..

Please give me 1 example of how night time is unrealistic. If you've ever ever ever spent time in true darkness with no light pollution you would realize how close this game gets to simulating it. Do you know that that a moon will come out and light up the night pretty well? To say that darkness is too dark and unrealistic is just not right. Do I like playing at night with no moon? No, I think it sucks probably as much as you do. But it's not unrealistic. This topic has been covered many times already in this thread that can give clearly definable reasons as to why dark is soo dark. I agree though, it sucks, we can only play with what we are dealt though. But, I'm hopeful that eventually moonlight will become standard at least 4 or 5 nights of the week as I love when it's shining and I can see at night but not too much to not be nervous. I've still yet to find a pair of NVG's and I want them so much!!

Yep! Also flares, chemlights and torches are abundant. Use them but use them cautiously. GOD I love playing at night, so much more interesting than during the daylight hours.
 
Wow, just installed the beta patch and there is a nice frame rate gain.

Highly recommended, easy steam instal instructions below (no messing with shortcut target lines or registry keys.)

  1. Install beta patch.
  2. There is _runA2CO_beta.cmd file in your OA folder.
  3. Make a copy of it in the same folder and name it something like _runA2CO_beta DayZ.cmd
  4. Right Click and Edit this file with notepad.
  5. Find the paragraph starting with the ":run" (almost at the end of file)
  6. Add -mod=@dayz right before the last numbers (%1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9)
  7. Save and exit
  8. Create a shortcut to this cmd file on your desktop and you ready to go

You can't see anything!

How the fuck are you meant to play? Turning up the gamma doesn't help much and makes the game look even more like shit.

A dark night is fine but you have to be able to see. It's stupid otherwise.

Night is not fine by any stretch of the imagination. I ve been in the middle of nowhere with no electricity around (black out) and i could see fine. Yes there was a moon. Solution put the fucking moon in game.

The fucking moon is in the game and when it's out you see slightly better.

Also flares, chemlights and torches.

There is a moon in the game, and on nights when it's not cloudy you can generally see fine.

I think the difference between purchased and free Arma 2 is purchased Arma 2 runs much better because of all the patches the free version doesn't have. I don't think high-res is included, only in an additional dlc purchase. Free is playable but isn't as steady, from what I've seen people say.
 
OK, so I'm Due my PC tomorrow - it has ARMA 2 & OA pre-installed so I "just" need to install the mod and I'm in.

Being a total noob (not done PC gaming since the original Ghost Recon) can anyone give me some tips please?

Also, interested in this GAF server - what's the pros & cons? Will this be open to everyone but just mean that we don't have to worry (so much) about the server going down?

I've downloaded mumble - are you guys still using that or does the new patch mean you're using in-game chat (how does that work - simply stick on headset and go?)

Sorry for dumb Qs but I've been pumped for this since OP and would like to jump in ASAP.

Are there any plans for meet-ups in game (I guess this is more possible due to dedicated server)? Be nice to meet some friendlys - esp for the first few plays.

I've come to the conclusion that everyone bitching about night is a pussy. And there's a wholeee lot of pussies in this thread.

If they ever change night it will ruin a huge part of the appeal of the game for me. If you don't like it go on a different server or play a bright and happy game ;)
